After 'Primetime,' Fox says it's looking into 'Idol' charges

In the wake of Wednesday's Primetime Live, on which former contestant Corey Clark said he had a secret affair with judge Paula Abdul, American Idol's producers said early Thursday that they take the accusations "very seriously" and "have already begun looking into them."

"I don't have any interest in helping American Idol out whatsoever, because they haven't helped me out whatsoever," says Clark.

In a statement, FremantleMedia, 19 Entertainment and Fox Broadcasting said they had contacted Clark and requested that he supply more details on the charges.

But Clark told USA TODAY Thursday: "I wasn't required to report anything to them at all. I'm not going to help them do anything. They haven't helped me do anything for the past two years except give me grief and headaches."

Though producers have yet to comment specifically on Abdul and whether any action has or will be taken against her, the statement noted that the judges don't affect the outcome of the singing contest. "Judges may offer opinions, but viewers vote using their own subjective criteria, and it is the voters who ultimately determine each season's American Idol."

Abdul, who has denied the allegations, was unavailable for comment.

To be in violation of game show laws, there would have to be intent to deceive the public in a scheme that would affect the outcome, as in the 1950s quiz show scandals; or under Federal Communications Commission rules, broadcast licensees would have had to fail to disclose rules about how the contest is operated.

Clark, who was disqualified as a finalist for not revealing past criminal charges, said Thursday that Abdul should not be punished: "She didn't do nothing but have sex."

Executive producer Nigel Lythgoe, in an interview broadcast on Fox affiliates, said: "I was rather disappointed with the shoddy journalism in last night's special. I don't think it's good enough to take just one person's allegations." He added, "To me the whole thing sort of stank."

Scott Savol, who was voted off Idol Wednesday, said Thursday in the show's weekly phone-call news conference that the turmoil "hasn't affected" the contestants. He didn't name Clark but said his claims were made to "get leeway to put out a mediocre product like a book and an album. ... The best way to get into the limelight is to start a controversy."

Clark's e-book is available through his Web site, coreyclark.com. His self-titled album is due in June.

On CBS' The Early Show Thursday, Clay Aiken, who was the runner-up during Clark's season, said he "absolutely" didn't sense anything improper going on.

In preliminary ratings, the exposé paid off for ABC. Primetime Live finished first in its 10 p.m. time slot with 13.8 million viewers, nearly doubling its Thursday average and giving ABC a win over both Law & Order (11.4 million) and CSI: NY (13 million) for the first time this season.

The controversy dominated morning radio and TV and water coolers everywhere.

"I saw the interview and it is quite explosive," said fan John Brown, 31, of Atlanta. "I think it will hurt the show. However, Paula is well liked, and I don't think he will help his career by bringing her down."

The American Idol judge being investigated for an alleged affair with a former contestant will make an appearance on NBC's Saturday Night Live this weekend, the entertainment magazine show The Insider reported Friday.

A spokesman for the show would say only that NBC was hopeful that such plans would come together.

A former American Idol contestant, Corey Clark, claimed this week that Abdul had an affair with him while he was competing in 2003 and coached him on how to do better on the Fox show.

I think this Corey Clark guy is HILARIOUS! He wait 2 yrs to bring this to the light and for what reason. I saw the interview and he never said what the purpose was of him telling the "truth." He coulda at least said for the integrity of the show but it was obvious that all he was trying to do was get his 5 mins of fame...LOL...I think he just mad that he got pimped by Paula..she used him for sex and once she got through, she tossed him on his butt and he STILL got kicked off the show..LOL...now he wanna cry and "expose" the truth..yea Corey its evident..you was used and abused...LOL...

I agree, he only did this for the publicity and no other reason or he would have talked sooner. If he thinks this will help him sell CD's then he may have miscalculated that one. The majority of the audience for his CD would most likely be female and this is not the way to win us over. If his story is true most females aren't celebrating the fact that he's selling Paula out after she did all of that stuff for him. I'm not saying Paula is totally innocent in all of this but women don't like men who kiss and tell.
