Ass Ride-The Reviews (Special Bonus for the Tori Brigade) I'm really really bored with music right now so I created a thread asking for suggestions on albums that will take me on a ride:
http://www.prince.org/msg/8/138309 I'm creating this thread dedicated to my rides and will be posting my thoughts and reviews here 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

As some of you know, I do not consider myself a huge Tori Amos fan. I did buy Boys for Pele when it came out and while I absofreakinlutely LOVE Professional Widow, I was kinda lost on much of that album. So I never really ventured into her music that much. All these years have gone by and I have definitely missed the Tori train.
GangstaFam recommended that I check out Tori's "Choirgirl Hotel" album: I sent him this orgnote: See, here's the thing. I totally dig on her person. I am so intrigued by her disasterous and tragic stories and find that a very compelling part of her artistry. I only own 2 albums. Boys for Pele and The BeeKeeper. Now I have given Beekeeper a couple spins and it's not that I don't like it, I'm jsut not jazzed by it. I have to admit, that I love love love Professional Widow, and I'm not talking about the dance mix That song for me is the part of Tori that I crave and can't really get enough of. That song is her trippin the fuck out. I mean what the hell? The instruments, the lyrics and her delivery. All fucked up and I LOVE IT!. I only liked some of Boys and so I never really checked out her other stuff. I think if I would have stuck with it as it was happening, it would have made an impression because I can't even begin to explain the impact that artists like Bjork and PJ have had on me especially considering my life around 94. That domestic abuse thread I wrote, well that is exactly the place I was in/leaving at the time so I think if I had stuck with Tori she would have made her mark on me. But it's not like I can go back and recreate that experience. For me to pick up Tori now, it will have to be about something else, and what that will be will be for me to find out. I did really dig on many of the lyrics from Beekeeper so I think it's safe to say that it will keep me coming back for more. I dunno, I know there are treasures to be discovered and I will start by Choirgirl and working my way through. She is an artist that is just so respected by so many I respect that I feel it would be a disservice not to give her a full fledged chance. Thank you for stoking the sparks I need on this Well.....at GangstaFam's suggestion, I bought Tori's "Choirgirl" and I have one question: WHAT THE HELL!? Since Saturday I have been eating this album alive . This is her "OK Computer" for me. I absolutely loved Radiohead's "The Bends" and when "OK Computer" was released I didn't feel it, at all. I left it in the music store. Then some years later Radiohead released "KidA" and I only had to hear the first 5 chords of the first song to know I would be touched in an amazing way. That is all I heard, 5 chords, and I picked up that album without question. I can't even tell you how revolutionary KidA was for me. It wasn't until KidA that I went back and bought Radiohead's "OK Computer" and it was just one of those things I just wasn't ready for because when I listened to it the second time around it was fresh and alive and real and amazing. And I sat there thinkin....I have missed out on this for so long and it made the re-discovery all that more amazing. That is what Choirgirl is for me And you know what? I do own Choirgirl. I told Gangsta that I only owned Boys and Bees but as soon as I saw the cover I realized that I do own this album as well. It's in storage though and I never bought a new copy or dug the existing one out of storage. I have no idea what was happening or why I did not connect with it at the time I bought it. Sometimes I get an album and get sidetracked from it and then it gets lost in the shuffle and then later I come back to it and think, "why didn't I feel this the first time?". Because I cannot imagine that this album wouldn't have had an impact on me all those years ago when I bought it. I mean I remember that I listened to it because the first song immediately sounded familiar but I don't remember the rest of it at all. This album is simply stunning and amazing. It is the Tori I have been craving! The music, the lyrics. I just love this album. It makes me so less afraid to dive into her other works. I realize that this will be her most unique work for me but it does stoke the hunger I have needed for her music. My favorite songs are Spark, Black Dove (I really love this song), Rasberry Swirl (YES!), Liquid Diamonds, She's Your Cocaine (Tori in full effect ).....and Pandora's Aquarium....that song is gorgeous. Pandora strikes the most emotional right now. And I never stopped to consider how talented a piano player she is. The timing she exercises with her fingers on the ivory, it is what sets her apart from so many other piano divas. Thank you so much Gangsta for recommending this to me. I truly truly love it. I can't wait for it to unfold on me. I will always think of you when I hear it . [Edited 3/28/05 16:10pm] 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

Second on the list:
Arcade Fire's "Funeral". This is a great album I don't even know how to describe it. Sometimes as I sat listening to it, i heard glimpses of sounds that were like the best moments of 80s music but they are mixed with something else. I love the transitions during songs, just when you thought you knew what to expect of the song it switches up into a different creature altogether. The sound of this album is familiar and unexpected all at the same time. Vintage and new. The concept of the album, including the liner notes, create a feeling of discovering something lost. I totally dig this Thanks to blackboab for the suggestion 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

Second: that's for finally listening to it an appreciating it This is, without a doubt, one of the best albums ever made (imo) it's one of those rare albums that conjure a world of their own. It's Tori in full effect doing some amazing work that makes my skin crawl with delight and fear at the same time. It stands up next to Radiohead's "KidA/Amnesiac" and "Achtung Baby" or even "Parade" in creating it's own world and dominating it. and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

Now, go here and download the videos from the album.
Start with "Spark" and have your ass kicked very very hard indeed. Especially if you've never seen it before, look at it attentively to the last second. It's sooo impressive. The Raspberry Swirl one is great too. And Jackie is a real treat. I love it love it love it love it. http://www.hereinmyhead.c...choir.html and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

A bitchslap and a hug I absolutely agree with you about this album creating it's own world. It's a journey for sure I really do wonder when I bought this album. I don't think I could have bought it when it first came out because I do remember that I was not into it, and if I did buy it when it first came out (may 98) it would have been but 4 mere months later when PJ Harvey released "Is This Desire". When Desire was released I was so ready for that album. I had a literal religious experience with it. I can't imagine being ready for one and not the other. I wanna listen to PJ Harvey's "Is This Desire and I don't have the album with me!! Oh well, I'll just have to listen to more Choirgirl 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

Hey Supa, if you dig Chorigirl... wait til you hear the bsides to it... I think I'll make you a cd. Fair trade, huh?
By the way, Choirgirl is my fave Tori cd. I LOVE Cruel, Liquid Diamonds and Iieee... OMG this song kicks ASS live. It's her only cd that I NEVER want to skip a track on... unless I have a song I just HAVE to hear. The album just flows so well and has the perfect balance of electronic/electric with her piano. LOVE LOVE LOVE this album and the tour is even better. The way she revamped Blood Roses... I just really can't even put it to words. Fucking AMAZING.

The thing that really strikes me about the album cover, especially after listening to the album, is her eye. It is so focused. You can see all the strength and the power. Reminds me of when I see the half moon looming in the sky surrounded by clouds. I often see it as the eye of God. And I absolutely love the blending of the electronic and organic instruments. That is what drew me so close to PJ's "Is This Desire". So many PJ fans were very put off by the electronic element to "Desire". Was it the same for Tori fans with this album? PJ fans got so used to a certain kind of expression that when PJ toned it down they thought it was less powerful and I absolutely completely disagree with that. Her subtlety gave the album even more power. It the difference between wind on an empty field and the wind rushing through a vast expanse of trees. The wind is the same but the experience is completely different. . [Edited 3/29/05 12:41pm] 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

Yeah, some of them. Not the cool ones! I still haven't gotten into PJ. Maybe you can help me with that... Oh honey, you have no idea. Remember when you said that you listened to Bjork's "Pluto" when you were pissed and it was perfect? Well PJ's music serves the most wonderful purpose and if you thought "Pluto" was perfect, you should try "No girl so sweet" on for size, because not only is the music in this song kickin but the lyrics are completely appropriate for when you're pissed. That song is amazing. Very different from the rest of the album but amazing nonetheless. Her music gives us the ability to express our rage and our pain in ways that the average person isn't capable of. You know, living your life through the music? A beautiful friend made me the most fantastic collection of her B-sides. I'll share that with you if you like. And do check out PJ's "Is This Desire". It is stunning. Can't even tell you what that album is for me. It makes me feel lost and found at the same time. It conjures so many opposing feelings and ideas. It's my favorite PJ album . Vina, here is a personal review on PJ's "Is this Desire"
i didn't realize how important this album was to me until i lost it (this happened recently). because i'm poor, i decided to buy uh huh her first because it is new and exciting. bad move. is this desire is her most consistently good record. suprisingly, as it is pretty dark, it got me through the toughest summer of my life. usually it pisses me off that she can't write a song in a major key. this is especially distracting on uh huh her. it makes all the songs sound the same, drony, uninteresting while desparately trying to be interesting. the textures on is this desire? are incredible, yet it is still raw enough (as opposed to stories from the city...) to evoke intense emotion and imagery. i also think the excercise of moving outside herself made this album stand out from her body of work. she channels these characters so well that upon first listen you might not realize that this isn't about her. if there's one thing i hate about female artists, it's self absorption (i'm guilty of writing like i'm the center of the universe). self absorption only works when it strikes a balance between raw/angsty and a certain level of perspective. on this record, polly is making other characters self absorbed, and i like it. the title track is particularly moving and haunting. the sparseness of the arrangement lets her guitar work shine on the chorus while her voice is left vulnerable and lilting as she asks "Is this desire enough, enough, to lift us higher. Is this desire?" Now apply that to mary and joseph.
In the liner notes of this album is a picture of Mary and Joseph. From the looks of it is from a children's book. Mary is on a donkey with Joseph leading them down a path. And it says: "Mary and Joseph went on and on. The sun went down. It was getting cold.....they saw fire. Think of that when you listen to the song. Absolute brilliance, especially when you think of it the way the reviewer put it . [Edited 3/29/05 13:54pm] 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

I'm kind of troubled by the comparrison to 80s music, in that people are probably going to expect a New wave or synthpop or other popular 80s style. I can't exactly identify it but there were many moments in the album that felt like some of the best moments in 80s music. I wonder if anyone who's heard this hears what I hear. Maybe I'm not describing it right but it's not exactly like you can throw this album in a specific bin because it's pretty unique. I like it very very much 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

[Edited 3/28/05 16:10pm] I am so glad that u have discovered this treasure of an album. It is one of my alltime favorites as well. Im really excited when someone experiences one of Tori's works and feels like I feel. Her stuff just takes u someplace else. I am a huge fan of Pele as well as Choirgirl. I didnt understand every song right away but I felt what the tunes were about way before I intellectually understood their meanings. She comes from a place that drips with ripe emotion steeped in the human condition and I really get that and I appreciate it. So congrats, my friend and give Pele another spin or two.

I love these Tori worship threads (sign me on for the brigade!!!). I also recently discovered her and a few weeks ago had a spiritual experience after listening to The Beekeeper over and over -- similar to an experience I had only one other time after a Prince concert last summer.
I have yet to listen to Choirgirl and all I can say...hooray!!! More Tori to discover...! Still working The Beekeeper though. That album really speaks to me.

Me too. It's rare, but I haven't listened to anyone else since that album came out. She's all I care about!
