Well, in this day and age big sales usually add up to major suckage.

I would highly disagree that Madonna has more in common with Janet than Bjork. There is nothing particularly cultured or refined in Janet's work. It's all there at face value with hardly any symbolism or irony. I would even say there's very little art to her act. Meanwhile, M and B are very similar in their explorational approach to music and videos. They steal from the best, work with the best, dodge cliches and dare to be different every time. The only difference I see is that Madonna's work is a bit more welcoming and familiar on the surface, making it easier to get lost in her material. Bjork conveys so much mystery, and one has to challenge themselves to experience her work.

wait a minute...i dont know if bjork has changed her tune now but she was originally asked to assist with the entire album that became Bedtime Story....The only reason that she agreed was because her bestfriend at the time loved Madonna so she did it as a favor to him...and even then she only agreed to one song..

ive always considered Bjork more along the lines of Nina Hagen or Grace Jones...

I think the only reason they should be compared at all is because of Madonna's more recent work. Yes, she has some underground leanings, but that's not what she built her career on. There's nothing particularly challenging about Madonna's actual music up until maybe her singles from 1990 and parts of Erotica and she retreated from that pretty quickly. Ray of Light up through the present is pretty adventurous sonically, but that's a relatively small percentage of her career. For the most part, her boundary pushing has been with taboos, sexual politics and the visual aspect of her work. But to some extent, I understand the point trying to be made with this thread. Madonna is a mainstream artist with enough underground/alternative influence to make her work interesting. And Bjork is an alternative artist with enough pop sensibility to make her work accessible.

I don't know too much about her either, but i've heard songs of hers on the radio and i don't really understand her music. And her videos are out of this world in strangeness, but that's what her fans love about her.

what's her biggest hit song? Or maybe she's more of an "album artist"? Could that be why I've never heard her songs?

Well, she's certainly not mainstream. You're not gonna hear her on the radio outside of college stations. And the big 3 video channels don't play her anymore. You'd be most likely to see her videos on M2 at this point and 120 Minutes back in the day. The videos and songs that got the most attention here in the US would be: Human Behaviour, Big-Time Sensuality, Army of Me, It's Oh So Quiet, Bachelorette and All is Full of Love. The others you'd be lucky to hear.

Yeah, that song's alright. But it's not among my favorites either.

If you're at all interested, pick up Bjork's greatest hits cd. She's an acquired taste and might take work. But if the music clicks with you, it's well worth the effort. And with a little time and familiarity, I don't think her music is hard to understand at all.

I admit to not knowing the full backstory. It was my understanding that Madonna asked Bjork to produce a track and Bjork agreed. The way you make it sound there was a hint of reluctance on Bjork's part.

on public enemy:
Around 1987, when The Sugarcubes started, I got heavily into hip hop. I was listening to Public Enemy every day, which meant a bit of a fight on the tour bus as I was trying to play it all the time and the others hated it. After Public Enemy, everything else is just like... woofty. I mean, wimpish. Yo Bum Rush The Show was the one that opened your mind but Fear Of A Black Planet is the one that, musically, is a masterpiece. They've been so misunderstood. They've mostly been taken for their politics, which is great, but if you just look at the other worlds, and there are a lot of worlds in this world, one being music, which is the leader of them all because it's pure instinct - well, musically, they just did it. No- one in hip hop, house, techno, whatever, opened up as much ground as they did. The music is so modern and so... abstract. It's just like, fuck the rules. I would put them in a group with people like Stockhausen and Schoenberg. Forget about rock'n'roll chords, we've all been suffering from them all our lives, and they just rescued us from that syndrome.

I think sosgemini is correct.
I don't think Bjork really cares for Madonna but she wrote the song because she was asked by a friend (possibly Nellee Hooper) who to my knowledge produces for Bjork.
