Wow... "I didn't Know Emancipation was that good"

so i bought my 13 year old cousin Emancipation, cause it was 9.99 at the store
2 weeks later he comes, to me, thanking me for it, how its his favorite C.D.
and its absolutely the best thing he's ever heard
and im like wtf are you talking about? Emancipation sucked! i havent listened to it since 97
and he's like no its great wow
so me, i wanted to see if he was hearing the same thing i was hearing
and i was surprised
i really underestimated this album
its really really good
i didn't think much of it before
but now its really good
maybe because my taste has changed throught the years

Yep, with songs like Let's Have a Baby, I Can't Make You Love Me, Face Down, The Love We Make, etc. I have absolutely no clue why it gets trashed around here. It's a great album.

I dunno bout a SOTT resurrection but there are some good tracks on here...too much filler tho. But there are good cuts on here

You can make a one-disc version of about 11 tracks that is nice to listen to with someone special.

Beyond that, most of it ranges from ok to awful. The production and instrumentation sound very dated already, and somewhat cheap.

This album definately has some killer work on it, although personally its a bit too produced and is missing much raw sounding material. Unfortunately because it has so many tracks, it opens the way for there to be too many less favoured tracks. You only need to dislike 2 or 3 per disc and you start to think that the whole album is maybe not as good as you would like to think.

SOTT is a fantastic album, but if it had been released as the 3 disc set that was origianally planned, with the original track listing it would never have got the praise it does as the tightness and the continuity of the music would have been lost. It would not be as respected or adored as much as it is even though it still includes all the tracks that made it to the final release.

Emancipation would have got much more appreciation, not only from fans but from the media and public generally, if it was a tighter double album.

I would remove

Courtin' time
White mansion.
Mr happy
Emale
The plan
Slave
Da da da
Emancipation

That still leaves 28 tracks but with a different track order the songs will compliment each other and it will prove again that the 90's was just as good for Prince as the 80's (but not better)

I like that song! Well the original anyway. Admitted Prince does force out that old chorus line. Nearly on a par with Appolonia's OOOOOH's at the end of TMWU! Vocal coulda been better I feel!

Yup, there's about an album's worth of good stuf, most of it on disc 2. That's the problem, the rest is really mediocre. I would like to add to that bad list "Get Yr Groove On." ick. But I kinda like White Mansion.

As i do...

Because of: One Kiss at a time; Emale; Soul Sanctuary; jonit 2 joint; holy river; lets have a baby; etc..

to me..
Emancipation woulda been TIGHT with:

Somebodys Somebody
Get Yo Groove On
Damned If I Do
Sex In The Summer(re-worked to be way bluesier)
One Kiss At A Time
Soul Sanctuary
Curious Child
Joint 2 Joint( re-worked to be way more erotic and guitar driven)
Holy River
Lets Have A Baby
Friend, Lover....
Savior
New World
Sleep Around
The Love We Make

That's my current version. smile

Disc 2, if alone, would have been one of P's best albums ever. 'Savior' is an often overlooked masterpiece, although the song doesn't end quite where it should imo. smile

In a previous thread, someone brought up the point that hearing this new album made him/her appreciate the previous ones (including some of the not-so-successful ones) a lot more. I couldn't agree more. Last night, I listened to Emancipation and found it to be an incredible album - all three fuckin' discs. It had been at least 2 years since I had pulled it off the shelf to have a listen. Given that I have basically tired of Musicology already, it was a welcomed change of pace.

Imagine if that label hadn't gone under....Emancipation would've been a hit album, for sure. I skipped over the covers, especially the horrible "Betcha...". It's one hell of an album. The music is so rich and so beautiful. Radio would be so kind to "Face Down", "Style", "Somebody's Somebody" and so many other tracks on that album.

One of my friends remixed Emale and used the music as the backing track to both ICPC and Life O' the Party. Holy shit!!! It sounds hot! My technical acumen is far too underdeveloped to know how to do this, but it's definitely hot. Maybe a re-mix of those two songs would make them a little more single-worthy. We'll see. I still want to see "Cinnamon Girl" as the next single released to radio (pop/top40), with Call My Name simultaneously released to R&B/Adult Contemporary. Hopefully P and Sony/Columbia will make the right moves so this project has some staying power.

I love pretty much every song on Emancipation aside from one. We Gets Up has to be the worst song I have ever heard. Other than that, I love all the different styles on the album.

I dont write music off too easy, I always give whatever cd's I buy 4 or 5 listens before I decide whether to love it or shelf it. Until your mind recognizes the patterns of the music and starts to become familiar with the lyrics, it is tough, at least for me, to say whether it is good or not. On the flip side, some songs turn out to just keep getting worse after each listen smile Such as We Gets Up for me.

As far as Prince music goes, anything new I approach without any bias, and try to accept it for what it is, and where he was coming from at that particular time.

For example, I love NPS, and I love NEWS, they are what they are, nothing more nothing less. I think a LOT of you would find NPS and NEWS very enjoyable if you gave it a few more listens and accepted it for what it is.

I for one would be bummed out if I missed out on 8 years of not listening to an album or song I would of liked all along if I only played it a few more times to give it a chance to settle in.

What would I remove off the 3cd set?

We Gets Up
Da Da Da, although I love Prince's rap on the song.

Peace

PS I forgot mention that I thank Mayte everytime I listen to this album for the inspiration she threw his way, the love songs are mind blowing on this album.

I think all 3 cd's are great. All of them have their own distinct personality. I play all three depending on the moood that I am in. When I wanna just chill and I play CD 2. When wanna run with the boys, I will pop in CD 1. When I wanna get my dance groove on, I will listen to CD3. To shorten the amount of CD's would ruin the purpose of the album. Prince is an artist of many colors, this album displays them.

I'm still not a huge fan of Emancipation, even after listening to it for the first time in a LONG while. Something about the majority of this album that just leaves me cold. The production on the majority of the tracks are bland, cold, and uninspiring! That's what he gets for allowing good ol' Kirky J on the computer and exerting his influence! Just sounds too similar to other shit out there at the time! Granted, there are a few good tracks here, but nothing that makes me go ga-ga for it.

Joint 2 Joint
Face Down
The Love We Make
Right Back Here In My Arms (should've been the 1st single)
Holy River
Saviour
Sex In The Summer
Slave
Sleep Around
In This Bed I Scream
White Mansion
My Computer

This is all the album should've been. They're the only tracks I listen to, and would make a proper album, IMHO. It was just a huge let down after hearing The Gold Experience!!

I definitely like Emancipation. It surely rivals SOTT in terms of creativity although I'm not into comparisons at all.... That was then, this is NOW!!!

I'm not too high on Disc I, there's just too much mediocrity on it. But damn, Disc II is absolutely incredible. I say just take that disc alone and you have all the proof you need that Emancipation is great.
