Urban Legend/1983 "Dance Electric" album?

It's cool to see how many different thoughts were expressed on this topic. Some thought the idea of this album being possible was cool. One has even recorded music and posted his song being so influenced by this 83 period. Others seemed to had gotten slightly upset. If you had read my thread carefully, I said right out the gate that I myself had READ this info out of some magazines. No where did I say this to be fact. I have Per Nilsen's book "DMSR". One of the best books written on Prince. Had it for years. And yes, it indeed has recording dates of many songs. That's why I thought it to be very interesting that in "Sounds" and "Right On" magazine, around 83 and 84, they wrote about this very subject. And what I found to be even more compelling is that Prince himself actually spoke on this 1983 album, his "album between 1999 and Purple Rain" in the cover story of Rolling Stone in 1985. That issue was titled "Prince Talks". Thanks go out to BinaryJustin for posting the actual Prince quote from the magazine on "The Aborted album" thread. He also posted some other info on the same thread that I didn't even know about regarding this topic. It's good to see that ya'll went and dug up Per Nilson's book, checking the songs mentioned. I can see ya'll tearing up the house looking for that book. "I know I have it around here somewhere. Oh, here it is. That song was an outtake for 1999. That's wrong!!! That song was waaaay after Purple Rain!!" I know just like you know what's been documented, especially in books written on Prince. Before you flip out and respond to something, you should read what you're responding to more carefully. P.S. Remember, Prince has said he recorded "Darling Nikki" close to where u live.

No problem!

I see no reason why:

a) There couldn't be a "missing" album from 1983;

b) Songs intended for one album wouldn't turn up on another (Like 'When 2 R In Love');

c) Just because Per Nilson states that a song wasn't recorded until a certain date, doesn't mean that the song wasn't written, or an unfinished demo wasn't made at an earlier date. Do you all think that EVERY song that Prince recorded at his home studio was catalogued? Or do you think there was a third-party in attendance taking notes when every rehearsal jam turned into a new song???

I love "What If?" threads. Everybody needs to lighten up.

One presumes this thread is at least in part aimed at me since you sent me an org note to check it out blackguitaristz (BTW, I'd never label myself a "player", but you are free to make that assumption if you wish).

Like I said in my post in the original thread "I believe" this rumour is false.

That means it is my opinion, it doesn't mean I contest the facts of this so-called 'urban legend' (the magazine articles that reference a mystery recording project between 1999 and Purple Rain).

Being able to articulate yourself relatively competently doesn't mean one is uptight about an something - The only person I see getting their panties in a bunch over it is your goodself. wink

Uh, Nouveau Dance, don't get upset because I called you out and checked you on responding properly to what you read. Second, "player" is just a phrase and third, I don't wear panties but if I ever choose to, can I borrow yours?

Errrr, it appears you are the upset on me "calling" you out and checking you, otherwise you wouldn't have started this second thread in response to my information in the first thread.

BTW, no-body borrows my panties, but I have a pair of those nasty Mr. Happy boxers if you care to borrow those. wink

Now let's hear no more of this silliness, I hope you're right on the 'missing 1983 album' I really do - how's that, all better? smile

If 1999 wasn't such a big hit, there may have been room for another album before Purple Rain, but Prince was getting Top 10 hits from the 1999 album as late as October 1983 ("Delirious"), with another single release that was on the charts as late as January 1984 ("Let's Pretend We're Married"). There really wasn't room for another album from Prince in 1983. He was doing too well with 1999 and already had another project in the works (a movie!). Can you imagine what would've happened to Purple Rain if Prince had yet another successful album before it? The whole thing may have been pushed aside, with songs being replaced by even newer ones, changing the entire feeling of the era which was "Purple Rain." The actors may have also changed. We already lost Vanity as "Nikki" in 1983 and Dez was just on his way out the door. Things to think about, I guess.

But, you didn't check me player. I was clear from the getgo. But dig, maybe you'll swing me those brand new purple panties I know you got stashed away there from Susan's and Brenda's collection.
