Does 1999 sound like Phil Collins' "Sussudio"?

I remeber seeing this video a while ago and heard that Collins was criticized for his song sounding exactly like that other artist's masterpiece, 1999. Now, if you ask me, these are 2 entirely different tracks. Sure they're funky, upbeat and danceable, and have synthesized melodic riffs, but they're not the same. Besides, Sussusio is in the key oc C major, while 1999 is in the key of F. Who's with me on this one?

I've always thought that Phil Collins' "Sussudio" sounded like Prince's "1999". When "Sussudio" first came out, I remember being pissed and saying that Phil had copied Prince's song. lol

actually...Phil Collins did model Sussudio after 1999. i remember him saying in an interview that he listened to a lot of Prince around that time and that the strings on his song were modeled after 1999.

Yeah, but it's probably only the synth-riff that makes the song sound similar. Otherwise, those are 2 different sounding tracks.

i am ashamed of myself for knowing this, but it was actually 'Invisible Touch' by Genesis, that Phil Collins said he based on Prince. He never actually said it was 1999, but a clip of P's vid was shown after he said this during the interview. Have I mentioned I am ashamed for knowing this? It is from a retrospective 'anthology'-type vid that Genesis released to TV and vid in the early 90's

Now that you mention it, they do sound very similar!!! 1999 is of course much, much better.

Easy Lover and Another Day In Paradise are Phil Collins' best songs.

Phil Collins is a master songwriter. well theres no rules for songwriting, but when it comes to hooks and shit, phil is the man. Every album has many many tracks that are great.
I like his new album testify, it gets better with every listen. ah that title track is amazing. I love how he puts just a little bit of distorted guitar into his music.

Of course it sounds like 1999. As much as Manic Monday sounds like Monday Monday the Mommas and the Poppas. People steal sounds all the time and with Phil admitting it, that should put this to bed.

Glad I could help.
