i love what you just said: "don't be afraid, letcha freak flag fly." that's what prince meant to me, and HAS meant to me, since 1982, when i was 7 years old.

that's why lately i have been reacting so strongly to the apparent suppression of freakness.

thanks for your post, handclapsfingasnapz...i really appreciate it...

but i don't want to support someone who preaches intolerance and homophobia. i know that's something that nobody cares about, but to me it's a huge deal. prince and his music were instrumental when i was an effeminate, skinny, weird kid who sucked at sports...it made me feel like there WAS a place where i fit in.

now? i don't know. i DO know that i'm definitely not wanted.

...awright.

blueangel, lemme share sumfin with u; my mom's side of the family sorta treats me...well, odd, 2 say the least. i've always been somewhat of the black sheep of my family:
* they question how many black friends i have (i get along with everybody, no matter what color someone is)

* they always wonder why i never wear shit like fubu and whatever other 'urban'-type fashions (i'm sorta punky-retro when it comes 2 dress)

* they say i 'talk white' or 'sound white', which is really super-funny. i'm a very intelligent young woman, been readin since the age of 2, been able 2 read/spell on a college level since i wuz very young.

* i haven't been in trouble with the law, i'm still a virgin, and i stay outta other people's business. my mom's folks are proud of me 4 all that, but still i feel as if they kinna jealous of me 4 those reasons...i have several family members who've been in trouble with the law, have a few female family members who are about the same age as me and had kids when they were young, and th' folks seem 2 worry about everybody's business under the sun except their own.

that, and they're racist as well. i grew up hearin 'em refer 2 white folks as (pardon my french) 'peckerwoods' and 'honkies' and stoopid shit like that. i distance myself from all that bullshit they say and do. my mother and father raised me 2 have respect and tolerance 4 everyone, even if they disrespect u. no 'isms' 2 be found in 'em. the lyrix scream 'schoolhouse rock' more than 'scholar' 2 me, imho. fer fuck's sake, he's a high school graduate, just like i am!!! lol not a damned thing in the world wrong with that, but there ain't a damned thing wrong with readin up on stuff and gettin your brain food on as well. thing is, if u gonna try 2 get deep on folks with music and history...i dunno. i don't wanna say that the brotha should take his booty 2 college or sumfin, take a course or two, but still...wordage is key.

then again, some folks interpret art a bit mo' different than others. who knows?

but anyway, blueangel, my advice 2 u is this: follow yo instincts. don't listen 2 all these cats runnin around, goin ballistic over lyrical content and whatever. do what u feel is right. i'm not sure if u got turned on 2 prince on your own or somebody else turned u on 2 'im, but remember this: it's all up 2 u. hope u understand me, sorry this is so ultra-long...

i've heard you say this in other threads, and i think it's the saddest thing i've ever heard. you really believe this, and somehow think that's okay?

when did I ever say I thought it was ok? When? Im sorry if I did not come across as disheartened about it but Ima realist now and realize theres a lot of fakers in Uptown..besides this time I meant that the Uptown dream FROM THE AUDIENCES PERSPECTIVE was and is boolshet..or else we wouldnt have seen theracist and homophobic things we have sen here lately and at other times(ever been to AMP?)

man, i don't know. yeah i'm the same blueangel on the club, the one that PP9 keeps censoring. what did i say on there that you thought was against the "stipulations" anyway?

eh? Im saying that you keep screaming about how npgmc is ( th erukles, the cnesoring etc) as if we all didnt already know how they do what they do...and its expected with Princes previous track record but you act like you are waking folkks up fiorm the matrix when they already been living in Zion before you even were a zygote

and why do you bring bowie into this? i never mentioned him. it's not b/c you associate him with fags, is it? i hope not, but i wonder.

geezus! I brought up Bowie because he is the litmus test it seems for "what a web-site should be and how it should be run" as people have been stating for the last 2 plus years..simple as that. Man wtf seriously! I dont associate him with anything except being a fucking bad-ass that I grew up with (still have the 45 record to Space Oddity etc). Lord its amazing how I am misunderstood sometimes.

so you really think uptown was all bullshit? so what was it then? he only sang "am i black or white, am i straight or gay?" to sell records? (yes i know that was on the next album!! i'm just using that lyric as an example) - because if so, then i think that makes it even worse for me...b/c that's purposefully duplicitous.

This subject again. Yes it was bullshit..because he was not honest about it fully and neither were we. I cant get into this again. I will give examples if I must though

i think you're a cool guy, and i REALLY dig a lot of what you write about prince's music.

so you really think uptown was all bullshit? so what was it then? he only sang "am i black or white, am i straight or gay?" to sell records? (yes i know that was on the next album!! i'm just using that lyric as an example) - because if so, then i think that makes it even worse for me...b/c that's purposefully duplicitous.

well, I'm not rd, but I'll give my whole take on the whole "uptown is bullshit" theory

the whole idea/concept of Uptown was not to be afraid, dare to be you, be open-minded, beliv what you want to believe-don't let others make you soething you're not
which, if you ask me, despite this whole JW, theseare thought/values that Prince has kept
throughout the years

Now as far as the whole sex and imagery thing goes; I think as far as the whole sex thing goes, he was young and loved sex, therefore he saw that as a vehical for his writting. As bobby z once said, "prince never meant to be sexual as an artist, he just saw it as a topic he could relate to and write about".

And for the imagery thing: he was/is a non-comfromist, meaning he didn't want to be like other people he trie (and succeded) to be the polar opposite of what was going on around him.

As far as the sex/imagery thing oges today: Sex: I'm sure he's had plently of itand still enjoys it, but he just doesn't see it as such a strong topic to write about anymore. The same can be said with Madonna.

Imagery for today: well, he's 44, and grown up. He doesn't see the need to be quite as radical anymore.

(along with what lovebizarre said)Ive always thought of Uptown as a place where all folks reaspected each other and could get down (live) with each other..whites blacks hispanics, polish, irish, gay, baptist, catholic, etc etc etc... and I have lived that life and so do my friends and family for the most part and that was innate AND engrained in me by my family, NOT Prince..so when this Prince mf-er came along I tought cool..someone else. Thats what Uptown was/is to me.

And when I say it was fake or not fully honest I mean HIS and THE AUDIENCE OF PRINCES UPTOWN ..NOT mine. My shit has never waned.. Im still living that freedom etc for all life regardless of what or who comes into my life. So thats why I could give two fucks if Prince writes what he writes because my own self is strong enough for anything much less an artist (evena great one) to fuck with it (or fuck it up rather)

rdhull, i'd love to hang out with you sometime, b/c you seem like a fucking cool guy.

i don't think it's good enough though to just say that "everyone knows that's how the club is, so there's no point in complaining" - how is that any different than saying "well everyone knows that country club doesn't accept black members, so there's no point in even trying to get in or complaining about it"?

honestly. i think that's a pretty reasonable comparison. maybe you think differently..in which case, cool..let me know why...just know that i think you rock and i dig your posts and the fact that you're not afraid to speak your mind.

as for dirty mind being bullshit (i gotta admit i find it amusing that you never had any problem writing actual cuss words until prince stopped) from the audience's perspective...well, it was NEVER bullshit for me, and it still ain't. y'all cynical "realist" motherfuckers can shit on it all you want...but for me it WAS and IS a way of life. yer gonna have to fight yer own damn war, cuz we don't wanna fight no more.

Wow! This was fucking beautiful. I read on one of these posts where someone who happened to be black stated that black people can't be racists. I was gonna respond to that but I didn't want to be picked apart for stating that I have a family full of them. Thank you, Dansa for always saying what's on your mind. worship

1.Meet and hangout, drink, fuck or what have you;anytime

2.I liked DM's philosophy.Im a realist not cynical(not completely at least). I am just saying I realize that we as humans will always find something different in another to point at and say "that aint mine" etc. sooner or later and given the right circumstance..maybe 5% of the world is immune to that. Again Im not saying it was "complete" boolshet and Im not saying that I dont live my life as open and accepting etc as Uptowns manifesto was..Im saying I do it my own self and not depenmding on Prince to take me there etc..especially since the audience isnt really true about themselves etc.

3.I still curse etc and I say "boolshet" because thats how Greg Brooks said it in SOTT movie and how Bernie Mac does it. I cant believe you think I dont curse or block them etc because of Prince...soemtimes I feel like cirsing other times I dont want to come off as brash and obnoxious etc ( I know, too late_

Why do I waste my time on this website?
Prince is now so race concious, does smart Larry have anything to do with this? I can't believe he showed interest in the JW religion because at one point in the history of the JWs they printed that in the new world God was going to correct their color.
I wonder if he knows this?

Another thing, when people of color use the N word it really offends me, I'm white and I never use this word.

I have loved Prince and never thought anything about his race. Why does he think about it so much? He is a rich mature black man that should enjoy his life and realize how lucky he is instead of getting stressed about issues that will probably always exist.
