Oh, it is! As far as the 1978-1989 albums go, I like this more than For You, Prince, Around the World in a Day, The Black Album and Batman. Maybe even more than Dirty Mind. And Disc 4 is even greater!

Packaging his greatest album with what would amount to 2 other top 10 Prince albums (with Disc 4 possibly even top 5) makes this deluxe set peerless for me. Nothing will ever be able to top it.

Bold Generation is officially that shit! 🙉 Forget a NPG 😄. Furthermore, what's with all this sniffling on posthumous releases (HCUDCMA 2 this time)? Was he secretly a softy? Sounds like he really wanted that young lady to get in contact with him 😂🙏mushy.

Honestly, if he slapped any old guide/rough/backing vocal on top of "Colleen" and called it a day most of you would like it at least twice as much, right?

Bold Generation might be my favorite track on here at the moment, I really love what Prince was saying here. Not much has changed since then, though the younger generations have to make time for politics since it's an inherent part of their lives now.

I think the irony is lost on some of these older Prince fans who grew into the exact kind of person Prince is singing to in this song.

My 2 cents:

Feel U Up

The bass work is really outta this world. I kinda like the reverb on the beat, was this Prince' intention? Or added for this release? Either way, very well done.

Irresistible Bitch

Funky as hell, still prefer the released b-side version. But I like the angry vocals and Linn on this one.

Money don't grow on trees

A very pleasant listen. Very organic, great music. It even sounds a bit Diamonds & Pearls era-like to me. Could have been on the Vault (Old Friends For Sale) album!

Vagina

This is fun, loose, reminds me of the Dirty Mind album, could have fit on there!

Rearrange

One of my favourites, great groove, heavy guitar work throughout, great energy. Love the ending!

Bold Generation

A great funk jam, Prince knew he had something great here. I miss a lead vocal. Maybe that's just because I'm reminded by the later version, but the vocals seem like only backing vocals to me. Still, great to hear this one.

Colleen

This reminds me of The Revolution rehearsing and jamming in the Purple Rain movie. It's fun, but gets a bit tedious after a while.

International Lover (Take 1, live in studio)

What a beautiful version. I love the relaxed vibe and how good and clear it all sounds. The quality of the recording (as with many on this set) is unbelievably good. The instruments and voice are just perfect. It's at least as good as the released one.

Turn It Up

Again, one of the best of this release. This track has it all, the funk, rock and party vibe of so many later tracks. Could have been a hit!

You're All I Want

A cool little diddy, not much more than that. Of all the rockabilly-like stuff on this set, it's not the best one. Is he singing 'You're all THEY want'? I do believe so.

Something In The Water

I LOVE this version. As much as the released version is more daring and adventurous on many levels, this is so beautiful and well produced.

If It'll Make U Happy

When reading a review before I heard this track myself I was cautious, Prince doing reggae... But this has given me goosebumps hearing it for the first time. smile Such a feel good track. Love it!

How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore? (Take 2, live in studio)

This version made me very emotional. It felt as if I was in the same room listening to him. Just stunning!

So much great material to digest in one take was quite an emotional trip. I couldn't believe hearing all this in such great quality. Welcome to satisfaction!

I'm noticing a LOT of the tracks instantly remind me of other songs.

Which is why, I'm sure, he didn't release them. It's not unusual for an artist to develop variations of a theme before choosing the best version, in their opinion, to release. I'm delighted to get this little glimpse behind the scenes of his creative process.

So, I'm really bad with lyrics at the best of times, and thought I'd ask here. In "Rearrange", I'm not sure if Prince is saying "won't" or "want" in a few places:

"People today won't/want change"

"Kids today won't/want love"

I've seen people say that the lyrics are "won't", and this would go with the later line "your music won't make me dance, I won't give it half a chance", but thought I'd see what everyone else hears there.

I'm damn sure he was saying want but the lyrics sites say won't. Music is all about how it makes you feel so whatever works for you. Saying this as a Thom Yorke/ Radiohead fan who hasn't the slightest what he says mostly 😄. Forget all that it's want hmph! 😁

The lyrics are : "People today won't change" - "Kiss the day more love".

It truly is remarkable. The album version is my second favorite song ever, and I can't say for sure that I like it more than this original version. I think I do, but the fact that the original makes it a conversation is incredible. "Something in the Water" is compelling in every incarnation I have heard it, live and studio. His most versatile track.

As for SITW, it's really a case of organic vs more "mechanical". Seeing as the updated take was the finished product so to speak I tend to lean more towards that 1 but agree I haven't heard a weak rendition on the song yet either (this 1 definitely included). Had always ignored it myself on boots but have grown very keen on it here. The drums, synths, the laid-back approach. Fantabulous 😀.

"Something In The Water" is a proto "When Doves Cry".

Everybody makes a big fuss on how he stripped down "When Doves Cry" to bare bones,
and it has become a staple because it reached number one.

But the same happened here.
He removed the bass and all "superfluous" instrumentation from the first sketch,
to let our brains imagine what's missing.

I always loved the first version, it's like a different song, but the similarities
with the ethereal nature of "Little Red Corvette"’s verses were maybe too blatant,
although the former sounds more Blade Runnerish,
especially with the help of the quirky synthy riff that comes on the 4.

It gave us fantastic extended jams, the apex being the 1985 Miami soundcheck/rehersal.

But the final version is a state of grace,
and make this one looks like a very fine draft, nothing more.
But given it's Prince we're talking about,
a draft of this caliber makes anyone’s Momma happy for sure.

Yes, yes, “want” makes more sense. I hope that’s what it is. The lyrics sites really through me off. I just assumed they had it right. But Now I hear it as either won’t/want or want/want, either of which is better than won’t/won’t.

I have always thought that about International Lover, High Fashion, and Mutiny. Now that you mention it for It'll Make You Happy, I can see that also.

.

The swag factor of the lyrics in International Lover and High Fashion seem very likely as Time songs. But the version of Lover that ended up on 1999 is very Prince.

The first thing that I thought while listening to this was - He wrote this for somebody else.

This might sound insane, but I immediately thought- Rick Springfield.
