So, yeah. That snippet of 3 Nigs that MalequeDaFreak claimed was from an outtake was from this rehearsal. Just as we all suspected. lol

It sounds a lot like the 'open rehearsal' of Strange Relationship @ First Avenue

sound like something that could have been an extended grove of that

These days I almost always prefer hearing live songs from artists over studio versions. For some reason...

I like this, like a lot of 'rehearsals', but the album version goes someplace, as is the intention, that the rehearsal version doesn't. A start to finish story. I love both of course

yeah. This version works more like an extended groove. But groovy it is, with lots of nice details.

Why do people keep saying "album version" when "Shockadelica" is a B-side? lol lol

Yes, I know what they mean, I'm only being silly. I also know it was officially released on "The hits/The B-sides" and I know it was going to be on the Camille album.

If you look up the definition of album it is : a collection of recordings issued as a single item on cd record or other medium wink Album version lol

Having heard this, I'm not generally interested in rehearsal boots as much as I'm interested in actual live shows. That being said, I've always wondered what was Prince's process when choosing what songs were performed live and when? For instance, a killer song like "Adore" isn't really played during the SOTT Tour but finds its way into live sets a few years later, which is true of several of Prince's songs. And, of course, a lot of it has to do with "feel" or "a feeling" for what will and won't work for a show/set, but I always hated that no journalist, of which I can recall, ever asked Prince substantive questions regarding how he constructs his shows. "Joy in Repetition" eventually became a monster live classic, but it was rarely, if ever, performed during the Nude Tour. And, again, I've always wanted to understand his process of how he chose which songs to perform, if there was a process, or if it was all just by feeling.

Most likely a few did, but Prince didn't answer it and just rambled off some script he had in his mind. Hence most Emancipation interviews being interchangeable, etc.

.

And of course he rarely talked to knowledgeable people.

.

And then there are the likes of Questlove who are seemingly starstruck when meeting him and then post "why doesn't he do X?" questions on Instagram and get upset when you point out that they're the ones who get to talk to Prince, not his followers.

I think we can agree on the fact that this is likely from an early 87, pre-First Avenue rehearsal, given the similarity to the (also not used in the end) Strange Relationship extended jam. If whomever has the whole rehearsal can confirm, that would be funky biggrin

Very good question.

I've asked the same.

.

Like listening to the Nice France 10.27.1985 show

they killed Temptation

.

why no do Temptation & Pop Life along with Paisley Park and America

as well as An Honest Man, Love or Money & Go

.

Instead of Delirous Little Red Corvette & Purple Rain

.

.

.

but even more directly to the 1987 shows, they rehearsed Strange Relationship, Ballad of Dorothy Parker, and Cat said the played around with Crystal Ball

.

Maybe Prince needed to tell a story and certain songs didn't fit with the SOTT narrative

Prince really started getting into 'delivering' a message of Love or God during the PR tour but it intensified with Under the Cherry Moon movie(not Parade tour) but even more with SOTT and full blown on the Lovesexy tour

I definitely can't refute points two and three. It did seem that the more popular he became he rarely spoke with acclaimed music journalist. But, I would also ask--and this is a real question since I don't read as many music mags/journals as I did in my youth--did the level/quality of music journalism, in general, decline? At first I thought that it was just my distaste for the new music that caused me not to like reading a lot of the reviews and articles, but I also began to feel that the writing/journalism was subpar. For instance, who are the respected, well-crafted music journalist today and for whom--what publications--are they writing? I'd actually like to read some because, again, I just lost interest in the genre after reading so many poorly written interviews and reviews.

First, ditto on everything you said. Damn, I still hate that we never got a proper, funky-ass rockin' version of "Temptation," "Paisley Park," or "America" thought at least we got a little bit of them. And, I completely agree with Prince's need to tell a story or to have all the story's fit within some lyrical, musical, or emotive context. Why else would he omit so many killer songs from various albums unless they just didn't fit the context of the album? But, shit, mane, he could have gave us that "Temptation" "full on, no holds barred, thank you and good night, ain't no mo gon' be left after I finish playing this one" treatment! I shudder with chills just to think about it. But, then, again, I shudder with chills about all the great live performances he gave us as well.

*

The edit is that I had to return to say but I do so love the verison of "Paisley Park" from Piano and a Microphone from the Paisley Park shows.
