It's interesting to know if some collectors have started late or if Prince picked up fans along the way.

I ponder this because I would always see the German 5inch and 3inch singles for years, so I would have thought if anyone wanted them by now then they would have them.

I remember at the time I couldn't decide whether to buy the 5inch or 3inch set so I bought both.

I never played the 3inch set as the packaging can be fragile but I would always compile my CDs onto cassette just for ease. Naturally, everything then got ripped as a digital back-up, so I suppose in many cases my CDs have only ever been played one or at most twice.

I do think it's a little funny that one day a whole load of mint CDs and vinyl will end up in a landfill as I wouldn't imagine anyone would want them in years to come.

I used to see the 5inch singles back the 90s all the time but as imports they were expensive, $13+ for singles. They were certainly around long enough for anyone interested to pick them up if willing to pay an album price for a single.

As for the 3", I've rarely seen them in stores. I have one myself and have see most of them in the collections of friends, but rarely saw them in stores.

I remember seeing them easily available too. I was never really bothered about collecting the singles myself.

RIP sad

PrinceVault doesn't list a full length or extended version of 17 Days.

If wonder if it's in the vault and unknown like the studio version of Electric Intercourse?

I do find this a little odd. But I also find it funny, that is has one of the longest ever song titles but the track length isn't similarly beefed up.

As we all know, Prince liked jamming and rehearsing with his band, so I'm sure other takes perhaps exist.

No way would I put 4 The tears In Your Eyes on here. It sits in the AWIAD period or even the Parade recordings more than Purple Rain.

Yes, it was recorded at the end of the Purple Rain Tour, but a whole year after the likes of the PR last PR recording sessions (the B-sides) and even after the majority of the ATWIAD tracks.

It firmly sounds like a transition track between ATWIAD and Parade, and was recorded along side the Romance 1600 tracks, which again, firmly lean towards the Parade recordings.

Like I said this is subject to debate. Based on recording session dates and/or prior releases, one could argue that remasters of Irresistible Bitch and She's Always In My Hair belong on a PR Deluxe because they're PR sessions era recordings, while I Would Die 4 U extended and Another Lonely Xmas for example belong on an ATWIAD rerelease for same reason. And then again it could be argued that We Can Fuck belongs to a GB Deluxe because it's an early cut of a GB song... With Prince being in an ongoing recording session his whole life, and constantly revisiting older recordings, it's impossible to objectively make those kind of decisions (unlike an artist like, say, Bowie, who would often work on a specific project for a specific amount of time, and not record all the time, so there it's easier to say what belongs where). Editorial decisions have to be made and I agree thatTTIYE can be associated with either ATWIAD or PR, or even early Parade sessions (though I don't believe anything for Parade was recorded prior to the end of the PR tour).

Same old issue of 'recordings' V's 'discography eras' biggrin Personally, I always had 4 The tears in Your Eyes on my expanded ATWIAD set.

For me, there are definitive sounds that change era to era. The end of PR and the move to ATWIAD and Parade saw a two clear changes in his music. Firstly, the move away from the linn to really drums. Secondly, the introduction of real horns over synths. Throw is some finger symbols and we have a totally new direction. lol

I totally agree! It screws my head!

Any archivist, whether it be Egyptian artifacts, books or cataloguing music must create a set of rules - and then stick to them. But naturally it's good to revisit rules.

I think the same for Prince.

As soon as a song is released it becomes part of that era and forms part of that lineage!

It would seem odd not to include We Can Funk as a part of the Grafitti Bridge lineage.

Similarly Baby I'm A Star could be considered a Controversy or 1999 track, but it's lineage is cemented in Purple Rain (rightly or wrongly).

I agree with the above saying that Prince didn't stick to set recording periods for albums which makes this tough.

I feel 4 The Tears In Your Eyes belongs to ATWIAD because it was recorded a month or so before ATWIAD was released and was officially released in the same month as ATWIAD - so I certainly don't see this as a Purple Rain track - that era was long gone by this time.

Thsi is a totally pointless disc for this collection. A waste of an opportunity for a true deluxe edition. Maybe WB are saving that for a future release to screw more money out of fans.

I'd argue that this disc is the essential second disc to a remastered album collection. All single tracks should definitely come with a deluxe album release. The outtakes are a nice bonus, but this one definitely has to be there.

This is a true deluxe version, it would be weird not to close the books on the PR album without including the single edits that were the ones getting a ton of airplay back in the day. Plus the extended mix of EC

I would have done one of two things:

1 - Eliminate the DVD and have, album x1, singles/edits x1, vault tracks x2 (list below).

OR

2 - Eliminate the DVD and have, album x1, singles/edits x1, outtakes from the album x1

In some ways I prefer idea 2 because I miss not having the alternate versions of the album tracks and after all an album deluxe should be about the album as a project and the album only. The vault tracks would be better placed on a 2xCD Purple Rain era CD such as, in alphabetical order:

100 MPH

All Day, All Night

Billy (Instrumental)

Cloreen Bacon Skin

Cold Coffee And Cocaine

Chocolate

The Dance Electric

Desire

Electric Intercourse

High Fashion

Father's Song

G‐Spot

Katrina's Paper Dolls

Love And Sex

Mama

Mutiny

Possessed

Our Destiny

Roadhouse Garden

Untitled Instrumental

Velvet Kitty Cat

We Can Fuck

Wednesday

Wet Dream Cousin (Instrumental)

Wonderful Ass

If things were placed in natural order, an ATWIAD deluxe would cover half of these and be a killer set.

Strictly to my interest, I would be happy the same if the 3rd CD was a 2-track including only "God (Love Theme From Purple Rain)" and "Another Lonely Christmas (Long Version)".

So, being these two with no audio defect and in official quality, I live well with it.

That said, the distortion on EC is an absolute major letdown, only partially alleviated for who (like me) have the 1989 "Erotic City) German CD on his collection.

I just receive my japanese* version of Purple Rain deluxe: the distortion doesn't appear on Erotic City...Nothing addtional compared EU version despite the OBI, the additional booklet in japanese & plastic protection for each disc...

* All my CD's are from Japan despite the ones that were not released there.

Yes, the extended version is an edit of the 30 minute rehearsal. The released version is one of my favourite single releases, which I listened to endlessly when it first came out. It blew my mind when I finally heard the full recording, realising it had been cut together and tidied up.

Questlove posted about it a while back on his Instagram, so it definitely exists. And note that it's subtitled 7inch B-side edit, implying an unedited version exists!

If it was like that when being remastered it would have been fixed. The only way this would have happened is a fault during manufacturing and pressing.

Is the much-revered Bernie Grundman to blame? And why not splice in the intro from the edit if someone did indeed notice?

One of the guys on the Peach & Black Podcast was saying only Another Lonely Christmas 12'' is the only track on disc 3 that hasn't been on a prior CD release. My question: on what CD was God Instrumental on prior to this release.

AFAIK, the only digital release of God Instrumental was not CD but rather an online digital release that was clearly a needle drop. Am I wrong?

Can someone confirm that the Japanese release does not have the error on Erotic City Extended?

If true, my first thought is I should find and download it and not feel guilty as I purchased the US version (plus the original CD and 2 copies each of the original vinyl and cassette), but I think I also saw that the Japanese version has proper disc holders as part of the packaging as well... May be worth another purchase?

Really though, if the Japanese version does not have the flaw, WB needs to fix this and do a replacement program. Just sayin'...

You know what, Bernie Grundman is just a company name now, and all kinds of folks do the mastering for "Bernie Grundman Mastering".
