Question about Wally (and crazy story)

Ok, so we know how mythic legend associated the song. Having never heard it, I was stunned at the thought that an acquaintance of mine named Wally who did security for Prince with Big Chick might somehow be the inspiration for the song somehow. Random thought, but for those whive heard it, what's it abt? I've known Wally for years but we just reconnected at the gym we go to. He mentioned a Prince tribute he was helping put on and that sparked a long conversation about him,us and how we didn't know we were both fans. He then showed me pics of him as security with Prince. I got home and thought wow, was that THE Wally?!?!

Wally Safford? He was a lifelong friend to prince and given bodyguard and dancer jobs etc the song is referring to prince talking to him about the breakup with Susannah, Wendy's twin sister. But now that I think about it I think it's not just about that but also about breaking up the revolution itself as well and what that meant to him

If the Wally you know is indeed Wally Safford then yes, this song was partly inspired by him.

It´s weird that the person who gave the song its title probably has no idea that the song even exists.

If the op is telling the truth, ...eh nevermind, because either way, Wally Safford knows about the song I'm sure.

Not only that, but it looks like maybe Jerome Benton has one, too. This facebook thing might be catching on--maybe I should get one? I'm always hesitant to just jump on the latest trends.

Of course he knew. He talks about the song about 90 seconds into JB's livestream from this Detroit radio interview (Friday, June 9, 2017):

i guess you meant you've "known me" from the standpoint of POSTING on the org, because otherwise...

to clarify what i thought i'd made clear. i've known wally for years. we NEVER talked about music or prince, so there was NO REASON to make the connection. he mentioned a tribute event he was part of here locally and i was like 'you're a prince fan...?' THEN he proceeded to show me pics of him as Prince's bodyguard. i'm floored, then i go home and ponder it, THEN...i'm STUNNED. because in Princeworld there is only ONE Wally...

Crazy and cool! A very similar thing happened to my friend (also a Prince fan) who recently reconnected with an old school friend, only to find out that she used to be Prince's manager! Sadly their reunion happened after 21/04 last year.

Yes.

The reason the song is named after Wally is because the context of the song is that of Prince talking to (or more appropriately, singing to) Wally that he wants to go out to a club and find a new girl because he's had his heart broken (by Susannah, although she's not mentioned by name in the song).

Prince asks Wally if he can try his sunglasses on. He then asks if Wally is gonna go to the club with "that same dame" and that he's "wondering if she has a sister, cuz that dame is so fine!"

One of the most heartbreaking parts to me is a lyric where Prince sings "If I don't find somebody......somebody will find me." - He sounds desperately lonely and heartbroken when singing this part. That's what Susan Rogers meant when she said she'd ached to hear him be that honest. This whole concept of him being so lonely that even if he doesn't find someone he digs, that he'll just go home with anyone as it'd still be better than being alone.

cool i gotta check it out, i always wondered where some of those new guys in that era were really coming from. It seemed to take Prince back to his community which guys like Matt Fink and Wendy seemed to resent but I never got a chance to hear him speak or talk.

ya but we're not suppossed to ask for stuff like that are we? Also, Susan Rogers opinion about Condition of The Heart made me doubt how great Wally actually is. Condition is ok and an illustration of his oft neglected keyboard skills but it's not one of my personal Prince faves.

Prince didn't know that Susannah had a sister? lol

Seriously, do we know that the song was about Susannah? Is there anything in particular in the song that could only refer to Susannah. The idea for the song seems to go back at least to Billy's Sunglasses, so I'm not convinced the song was about things going on in his life at the time of recording.

It's been said that one line is the only thing Wally and Billy Sunglasses share. As for the inspiration, Wally was recorded just after Susannah left and Susan Rogers has suggested that he'd been a bit mopey about it.

I can see why Susan Rogers THINKS it is about Susannah, but she can't know for sure, can she? I think this might be another Strange Relationship or The Beautiful Ones, song that people thought were about Susannah but wasn't.

That's a bit of an assumption considering Susan was referring to version 1 of wally, which has totally different lyrics in which Prince choose NOT to go out, gives Wally back his glasses and $50 he borrowed and stays at home to drown his sorrows.

No, you're misunderstanding.

Prince is asking Wally if Wally is still going out with another girl - unidentified random girl, because apparently that girl is fine, and he wants to know if THAT girl has a sister, because Prince needs a new girl, because Prince has broken up with Susannah.

Get it? lol
