Book about Prince's Studio sessions (1983/84) is on Amazon for Pre-release

bvZW2ZS.jpg

My first book, PRINCE AND THE PURPLE RAIN ERA STUDIO SESSIONS (1983-1984) is now available for pre-sale on Amazon!

https://www.amazon.com/dp...ane+tudahl

I’ll post more details as it gets closer to the official release date (November 2017). This is a hardcover book and the price will likely fluctuate, but since today is the launch date, I wanted to share this information with you.

“The music I make a lot of the time is reflective of the life I am leading.”

Prince

The book is a very detailed daily log of what Prince recorded in the studio during 1983 and 1984 which is when he went from critical darling to the biggest rock star on the planet and the story is told through his time in the recording studio. This book isn’t just a chronicle of when and where he recorded some of his biggest hits, thanks to the contributions of so many people who were there in the recording studio with him, it also explains WHY he recorded many of his greatest songs, as well as never-before-published details about what is in Prince’s vault.

Over 220 sessions are covered in the book including music recorded for Prince as well as The Bangles, Stevie Nicks, Sheena Easton, Apollonia 6, Vanity 6, The Time, The Family, Sheila E. and others.

I’ve spent 20 years working on this book series, and this is the first of what I expect will be multiple volumes. I am grateful to everyone involved in this book for sharing their time and stories with me. I hope that the access that I was granted helps reveal an entirely new view of the genius of Prince, as detailed by those who knew him best.

This volume contains contributions from: Lisa Coleman, Wendy Melvoin, Matt Fink (Dr. Fink), Mark Brown (Brown Mark), Susannah Melvoin, Albert Magnoli, Peggy Blum (Peggy Mac), Alan Leeds, Susan Rogers, Jesse Johnson, Jill Castellini (Jill Jones), David Z Rivkin, David Coleman, Brenda Bennett, Bob Cavallo, Arne Frager, David Tickle, Tim Barr, Bill Jackson, Mark Cardenas, Coke Johnson, Craig Hubler, Paul Camarata, Eddie Mininfield (Eddie M.), Jerry Hubbard, Larry Williams, Laury Woods, Mike Kloster, David Knight, Brad Marsh, Novi Novog, Richard McKernan, Sid Page, Stephen Shelton, Murielle Hamilton, Terry Christian, Tony Christian, LeRoy “Roy” Bennett, Brent Fischer, Clare Fischer, and some additional information from Jellybean Johnson, Paul Peterson, Benny Rietveld, Pepé Willie and Eric Leeds. Thank you to each of you for sharing your stories of Prince’s work in the studio with me.

Special thanks to Hucky Austin, Jacqui Thompson, Alan Freed, Per Nilsen, Jesse Esparza, jooZt Mattheij, Camron Gilreath, Scott Bogen, Thomas de Bruin, Steve Parke, Gavin McLaughlin, Ken Meyer, Alex Hahn, Donna Fischer, Carol McGovney, Jamie Shoop, Jessica Pucci, Kathleen Johnson, Paul Camarata, Craig Hubler, Monique Tudahl, Gary Coleman, K. Nicola Dyes, Linda Ganster, Michael Ganster, Sheila Johnson, Jason Draper and my Acquisitions editor Natalie Mandziuk.

Thanx to all of you in the Prince: The Complete Studio Sessions Book series FB group for having faith.

https://www.facebook.com/...104195943/

A gigantic thank you Neal Preston for the amazing cover photo and to Phil “Rev” Hodgkiss for the incredible interpretation of it. Both of you are incredibly skilled artists.

And of course, a huge gigantic thank you to Questlove for writing the foreword. I’m glad you enjoyed the book so much.

THE PRICE ON AMAZON WILL PROBABLY GO DOWN, BUT IF YOU WANT TO GET A FASTER DISCOUNT, PLEASE USE THIS COUPON TO GET 30% OFF FROM THE PUBLISHER.

I will definitely buy and support this book because its one of the few books that doesn't exploit Prince after his death with salacious innuendo about Prince's personal life. I hope this book covers other Prince musical eras beyond the eighties decade.

This is the first volume of a series, and this one only covers 1983/84, but in that period, I detail over 220 sessions, countless soundchecks & rehearsals and the live shows. This book is about 400 pages and I have other planned. The next one will likely be 1985/86, which is an incredible story.

The parts about Prince's personal life are only in the context of how the music was created.

Thank you for the support.

The Vault is still one of my favorite books, and I'm proud to have contributed to it. Every book about Prince uses The Vault and PrinceVault.com for reference, even if they don't credit them.

Yes, having people like Per Nilsen, Steve Parke and Alan Leeds to give their comments about the book has been great. All three of them are great people. Also, getting Questlove to write the foreword was really lucky. He really enjoyed reading the book and I'm honored that he wanted to write something for it.

It seems the one to get. I've avoided most books last year, but this one focuses on exactly what I want to read about.

Thank you. I understand what you are saying, but I think that there are several other great books out there. I hope you enjoy this one.

I wrote the sort of book that I wanted to read and I was fortunate to get access to a lot of the people who were involved with the studio sessions from this era.

That's great to hear! I have books about Jimi Hendrix's recording sessions and rehearsals and I always wanted to have a book that chronicled Prince's music in the same way. My gratitude for doing this for the hardcore fans.

I enjoyed the Hendrix book, but I wish they'd have started each date with the songs that were done that day. I tried to follow the format of The Beatles Studio Sessions. There are a lot of great books about studio sessions, but The Beatles book is the bible/template for all of us.

Thank you for the props and I look forward to this getting out there.

Can't wait to read it! This is the most exciting book project ever!

Will it come in ebook as well? Being in China if I order the physical copy to be delivered in France it may take months before I get to read it.

Many thanks and hug Madhouseman for all the hard work and this fascinating project!

Why not have it shipped to China straight away? Surely that would be possible with Amazon.
As for me, there's always so many books I want to read that I'm going to wait a while. I haven't even read George Clinton's book yet...

I do discuss several songs by Vanity 6 and forgot to put them in the ad. I'll fix that. Their album was recorded and released before this book starts, but I do cover their work together on Sex Shooter and several other songs like Velvet Kitty Cat, Promise 2 B True, Moral Majority, and Vibrator (all of which are still outtakes) as well as some work on extended versions of songs from the Vanity 6 album.

I also go into detail about Vanity leaving Prince and the struggle to replace her in the movie, etc. A lot of detail about her time working with Prince and some of the songs she inspired (Wonderful Ass, Strange Relationship, etc.).

Thank you for pointing that out.

I knew he was a workaholic, but finding out just how seriously he focused was interesting to me. Also, how his life influenced his music was really eye opening and seeing how much work he put into certain songs and how other songs were done very easily. One track involved Prince sitting at the piano and when he was finished singing and playing the music for the song, he quietly closed the lid to the piano, got up and left without saying a word to the engineer. The sessions was over without another comment.

I was also very interested to find out truly how vital Wendy & Lisa were to his music, but also Lisa's brother David Coleman, who really influenced the course of his career in ways that had never been reported.

What I loved about this was understanding him through his music because that is really the language that he spoke, and if you could reply in a way that inspired music, he invited you into his space. If not, you were never going to be in his inner circle.

Hope that helps answer your question. Thanx!

I would love that too eventually. For now, I'm working my way toward that era. The next volume will be 1985/86 which really is the book end for this volume.

The 90s would be something I'd love to eventually explore.

I haven't read her book, so I can't make any comment about it. Writing a book is very tough and I wish her well.

Yes, this one is about the music and how his life influenced his music. The book starts off with a quote by Prince that says: “The music I make a lot of the time is reflective of the life I am leading.”

I hope that comes through in the book. It was a period of exploration and confidence for him, but it could have easily gone the way of so many other terrible rock movie soundtracks. Luckily the music and movie struck a chord and MTV was in it's infancy and everything worked together to take great songs, a great performance and a strong group of people surrounding him and turn it into a success.

Thank you for the props. I'm looking forward to this coming out in November.

Well done Madhouseman!!

This is a great idea for a book! it needed to be done the correct way and it sounds like you acheived it.

That is a huge undertaking.

I would love to see a book on the next year aswell as I believe that is probably even more mind blowing!!
