I joined Spotify...only 18 Prince albums?

What is the best streaming service - meaning where we can get the most music?

Just fun....nothing ethereal.

So it seems that Tidal has the most music.
And Spotify users can wait if they want. If not within this month, I'll switch over to Tidal.
Let's just hope getting out of Spotify isn't like trying to get divorced from Classmates.com.

Tidal still has the most, but they've lost a lot of titles. From about May last year, it had been pretty much comprehensive in terms of albums. Unfortunately, that hasn't been the case for several months.

You can get a free trial on Tidal to check out.

I have my PS4 hooked up to a good sound system so the Spotify app is really convenient. It's a pain Tidal don't have an app for it.

I just stayed with Tidal. Then again I'm far from a good gauge on such things. But so far I'm getting what I want so I'm staying here. shrug

What's the difference between the two, in your opinion?

I'm on Spotify and although it's true they don't have all the albums, I have them myself so no problem there.

The major difference is no one uses Tidal bar a few Prince mega-fans who probably already have the albums on cd and vinyl. Spotify has pretty much won the streaming war.

Some questions I honestly don't know the answer to (so, not meant to be sarcastic or ironic):

  • Does Tidal have a standalone app (for Windows, Mac OS, Linux, Android, ...), or is it all happening in the browser?
  • Does Tidal have a free version?
  • Does Tidal have social media plugins?

I've started using Spotify heavily recently, and am loving it.

Even better: up to now, I've been using the free version on Linux, and I can listen to everything I like, make playlists, share with friends, etc.

If Tidal can do all of these things, I might consider switching ... but only if it isn't too pricy, and if it has the same features that I can use in Spotify.

Tidal does not have a free version, but they do have an "SD" version (vs. the "HD" lossless version).

I do believe there is a Tidal mobile app though.

I purchased Slaughterhouse, The Chocolate Invasion, The War, C-NOTE and Xpectation from them in FLAC lossless format. Somewhere on another thread, I posted my email correspondence with one of their techs, who did some digging and found that they were truly "lossless" (there was concern that the songs were upsampled from the original MP3s.). That gave me some confidence.

Spotify seems to be the best of all worlds, considering. If you're OK with commercials/ads, then the free version is great!

Much as I still have my issues with it, I can not deny Tidal is the best for P super-fans like us. And I have discovered some great non-Prince music on there as well. IMHO, I'd go as far as saying that Tidal is for the legit music heads, while Spotify is for the more casual aka I-don't-take-music-as-seriously-as-others, and that's ok. Spotify is great, no judgment. With that being said, it CRUSHED me beyond belief when Tidal dropped 3121, CB, Exodus, ONA (as well as It ain't Over..), Girl 6 and whatever else I'm forgetting. Basically, a significant amount of stuff disappeared. Of course I have the physical copies of just about everything, but for somebody without wheels, my phone is essentially my music source, and I NEED access to whatever Prince I fancy at the time. Is there a reason they dropped some but not all? Only a little time to stream exclusively? How the hell is The War of all things still available, but yet Musicology and 3121 were dropped? This shit is puzzling to me.

If Prince was not on Tidal, would you still prefer it over Spotify?

I heard Spotify just signed a deal with Universal so maybe that means Prince's non-WB music will be coming to the platform soon. They're also making a change where new releases are restricted to paying subscribers for the first two weeks. Personally I think the artist should make that decision and should be allowed to decide how long a new release is subscription only or even keeping it off the platform all together for a period of time.

I've also heard that Apple Music pays out the most to the artists. I wonder if we'll get to a point where artists work directly with Apple and Spotify and others to get their music out vs. going through record companies.

Not in the very least, friend. My allegiance to Prince and what's available of his on there is the ONLY reason I use Tidal. And please let me explain my reasonings when I say that A.) I have my issues with Tidal and B.) Why I feel it's superior to Spotify at the same time. For starters, as much as I love hip-hop, Tidal is farrrrr too hip-hop-oriented. They certainly showcase other kinds of music, but let's not kid ourselves: You're bombarded with hip-hop stuff as soon as the app/site is launched. Another reason I dislike it is because of Jay-Z. Jay-Z the rapper? Sure, I like some stuff. The businessman? No thanks. He ain't the man of the struggling artist like he portrayed himself to be with the launch. I don't like putting money into the pockets of a man I find to be very superficial. Tidal came with a bad reputation upon delivery, and I haven't shaken it. Now for the good: They care VERY MUCH about sound quality. You have the premium subscription, and the ultra one. The ultra one is cd quality sound, an option not many other streaming sites offer. It's double the price of the premium, but worth it for a serious audiophile, which I am not. I also find Tidal and how to navigate through it to be sleeker, and overall more well-done than Spotify. Spotify, and how the user's library is set up is clunky to me. Anyway, when word got out P's stuff was coming back to Spot, I was so ready to kick Tidal's ass out of the world. But then the sad truth came that only a percentage of his stuff was on it, so I kept Tidal. So I guess my mixed feelings towards may Tidal be a little trivial, perhaps subjective. But if the day comes when all of P's post-WB material hits Spotify, I'm jumping ship immediately.

Regarding Exodus, since when? Because not only was the album seemingly erased, the entire NPG artist page was erased from my library as well! I'm serious as a heart attack! Edit: Ok, just looked at my phone. Soooo, The NPG is back on my library, and now they also carry NPS, ONA, It Ain't.., and the Love Symbol album under that umbrella. But then you also have "Prince & The New Power Generation" as an artist page and that one has 2 versions of D&P, 2 versions of the Gett Off single, and the Love Symbol album. Then I went on Prince's main page, and, well that's been a total mess for some time now. 2 options for multiple albums (even though the optuions are exactly the same), the Symbol album. Why the hell do I have the option of going on three different Prince-affiliated pages and all 3 have the Symbol album, but yet I can't get 3121 on any of them?! Oh sure, I can get Xpectation, but what if I wanna listen to crucial? Nope, CB ain't available. This is entirely too confusing. Probably due to copyright stuff.
