I was young and living right outside Mpls. when Prince and Madonna were coming up and their music was in the clubs. What bothers me personally about how Madonna has evolved can be summed up in a headline just posted today from her: I always feel better with something hard between my legs," Madonna told the crowd. Why? This garbage is demeaning and isn't doing her, or woman in general, any favors. To be 'cool' one needs to have 'class' Not in the same league as Prince.
Exactly. Prince sang about sex, but his lyrics went over better because he wasn't severe as he got older; he took out the raunchy stuff but was still very sexy. Madonna doesn't have what she needs to achieve this. Prince still sang about sex, but he did become more responsible lyrically.

With the exception of Breakfast Can Wait!

I've always found that song embarrassing - particularly at Prince's age. I'd thought he had moved on from such things but had slipped back on that track.

She literally can though? You can watch videos of her playing guitar - most of her earliest work featured her on guitar. Love Song is her on synths?

She's a glorified Vaudeville act at best, and even that is probably too gracious.

She lacks the keen sense of timing he had.

Not to mention the wit.

There was always a great sense of desperation about her, which is most distracting and unbecoming.

Plus she can not function without attention, to her detriment and to the detriment of the family members she tried to acquire.

Depressing.

They both had a decent work ethic, that is all.

Maybe perhaps because a lot of what Madonna has done over her career seems contrived? Also I'm not sure Prince was always celebrated for everything he did. But the thing is he grew up and grew out of the need to shock. Madonna never did. Case in point from the 2015 Grammys: madonna-butt-main.jpg Like Prince said in 2004:
“Look at this situation with the FCC after Janet: We’ve gone too far now. We’ve pushed the envelope off the table and forgotten there was a table. You can’t push the envelope any further than I pushed it. So stop! What’s the point?”

I don't think this is a sexist thing at all. I wouldn't want to see Prince flashing his ass at 56 either. But I'm all ears if Madonna has examples of where Prince was lauded for doing something whereas she was given shit for doing the exact same thing. wink

Yeah, Prince would never have his ass hanging out in public.

Well that's not really the point of the thread.

Madonna writes, produces, performs etc, just like Prince, so no great difference really.

Look at her album sales and she gets the last laugh.

lol

Because her fans are loyal and stick around not like some Prince fans who jump ship and come back. Just to add that ain't a dig at any other Prince fans.

It's not a comparison, nor a contest. Can we not do that, and just stick to her comments on sexism and bigotry that women face in the industry? It's amazing to me that in 2016 it still happens to blatantly.

Preach.

Oh please. For a generic pop star, she was hailed and accepted by cultural elites as a maverick. She has been able to live in the mainstream and edge. The conservative criticism has been a foundation for her career, because it definately is not the music or talent.

Prince has also had to fight against the narrow box and stereotypes that a majority of the public/industry puts Black artists/men into.

It wasn't Madonna that was getting chicken, racial and antigay slurs being thrown at her by 100,000 Rolling Stone fans.

Let's not forget it was a Prince song that basically started the PMRC and got record labels to start putting parental advisory stickers on records. And let's also not forget that Prince has always been supportive of women and had many women musicians in his bands. Sorry Madonna you can STFU.

There's some truth to what she says. Something MJ said in regards to her popularity is also true. He said something to the affect that she doesn't receive the same adulation and praise as artists like he and Prince, because she is a woman, and that always aggitated her as an entertainer. Girls never screamed for her the way they did for her male counterparts. That was something that always fueled her in a way, because she will never get that.

Maybe because Prince and Michael were great songwriters and Prince is one of the greatest musicians of the 20th century. Let's face it artists that write their own music and play instruments will always get more respect than those that don't. How many songs does Madonna have sole songwriting credits on?

Prince's specialism has always been writing and performing 'white' pop and rock.

That's why Prince is concidered a 'rock' star and not an rnb artist.

Prince also embrassed white radio and white singles charts.

So there really wasn't anything black about Prince at all - but he engineered that to cross over to have mass appeal.

Madonna and Prince are two completely different types of artists. Prince had a gift. He wrote, composed, arranged, produced, played, performed, orchestrated. To me, Madonna is a performer -- that is what she is good at. She doesn't have the greatest voice in the world, but she manages to hold a note, and give one hell of a performance. She is business-savvy, I will give her that. She is the Queen of her domain and has earned a lot of respect in the industry, not saying she went about it the right way. But the longevity of her career speaks for itself.

.

Prince was one-of-a-kind. A modern-day Mozart, if you will. He ate, breathed and lived music, 24/7. He was immensely talented. He could play 20+ instruments, and play them exceptionally well. Not many artists can do what he did. He influenced people all around the world. He crossed all genres of music. He did his thang. He was real. Nothing fake/plastic about him. His legacy will live on forever. He was, without a question, the best artist of my generation. There will never be another Prince. prince eye

I agree with what she said - as I followed her career right from the start and saw all the bumps she suffered along the way - she was in her underwear and caused a scandal but Prince was and it was OK. Double standards have always been around between men and women unfortunately. Regardless of what field a woman is in - men still get paid more, and are treated differently.........period.

I always admired she stuck to her guns in the 80s and 90s (I was not a Prince fan then myself so much as I had not really taken much notice of him during that time as I was a huge Madonna fan) but I admit it is a little embaressing now she is having her butt hanging out and feels the need to be so crude and I admit I am not so keen on her now - but what she said does still stand true.

Prince did grow up and act his age and that is where he got it right - wheras Madonna is refusing to get older gracefully & really I dont understand why not, as she looks great and she does great work with Raising Malawi etc. You know in Australia last week on the first page of news feeds were stories about Madonna HANDS - can you believe it? I mean really? OK so they are older - so what? Why is this a story? You dont see stores like that about men. This is what women in the entertainment industry have to put up with - and even in other fields of everyday life.

Prince has wayyyyyyy more talent than her - I agree - but she still does deserve her place in the music world even though she will never be of his calibre (but then to me, no body can "do it like Prince" can)

Thank you Prince for every note you left behind 💜

Everything bad in the world happens because of sexism. Hillary lost the election because she has a vagina, not because she was a terrible centrist candidate. Everybody gives Madonna shit because she has a vagina, not because she's still trying to pretend to be a sex icon at 60. Prince got a free pass for showing part of his ass because he's a man while Madonna got crucified for releasing a sex book with full frontal photos and a biker eating her out.

Later in the speech, she remembered Prince and other legendary artists who she's outlived. "Michael is gone, Tupac is gone, Prince is gone, Whitney is gone, Amy Winehouse is gone, David Bowie is gone. But I'm still standing," she said, to cheers from the audience. "I'm one of the lucky ones."

I get what Madonna is saying......but she still had support from radio, tv etc and she wasn't blacklisted or banned from events like the Grammys (unlike Janet who was after Superbowl 2004) etc even at the height of the Sex book/Body Of Evidence/Erotica era. Plus the media didn't leave her alone when she was married to Sean Penn, in the 80s they were dubbed them "The Poison Penns" that is part of the reason why he lashed out and ended up in prison for 60 days (and that he also had drinking and anger managment issues)....because of the photographer taunts that were directed mostly at her. I think Madonna really deserved the award worship ....but I also think she also has a selective memory too.

I agree with Madonna with regard to there being a double standard for men and women when it comes to sexual promiscuity and sexually explicit music. She is right about that. However, Prince did receive a lot of criticism for the sexual nature of some of his songs. "Darling Nikki" was #1 on the filthy 15 list. Madonna's "Dress You Up" was #8, although it is much less explicit than "Darling Nikki." I was born in 1986, so I can't speak in detail about how society and the media treated Madonna and Prince during the mid 80s, because I wasn't alive or I was an infant. She is right about there being a double standard, but Prince received his fair share of criticism also.
