QUIRKINESS OR WEIRDNESS??

It's obvious that P has a lot of quirk and witty humor with his music and onstage persona. This is one of the things I LOVE most about him. He embraces the weird and he doesn't give a f about it. This is a question for the OG fans. Did he ever seem downright weird or bizarre? A lot of what he did, at least to me, seems funny, or like I said, quirky and witty. From the ejaculating guitar, to wearing animal print underwear, even riding on the back of some big ol security guard, got a good chuckle out of me the first time I saw it. Even his later stuff that he did like the name symbol change and writing slave on his face says to me that this is a guy who knows who he is, what he's about, and doesn't take any crap from anybody. I'm only saying this because after the 60's and 70's, with the "free love" movement, counterculture, and all of that, it seems kind of odd that these actions were considered "controversial" at the time.

Thoughts?

I've never felt P was weird, but I do think he was quirky. Lol

I've always felt that whatever he was doing was, for the most part, done with a wink and the general public was taking things waaay too seriously.

I have to say that a lot of what he did bewildered me..though I put it down to his being highly creative, many things I just didnt understand..

slaVe on his face...I just didnt get it at the time....

Its only now after he has passed that Im starting to understand the depth of his character and the Genius that flowed through him...not only as a Musician

30 years ago, I might have thought him a little wierd...20 years ago quirky perhaps..

but now I simply see that he was more free than possibly anyone else I can think of...

The fact that he lived his life and continued his creativity without the use of Intoxicants which are another kind of enslavement, has made me see him with Awe and at times some reverence...

In a world filled with Drugs and Alcohol, he stayed Clean...

Now Thats QUIRKY....

Prince wasn't afraid to be himself, misunderstood and all. I really admire that about him. And no, he wouldn't take people's crap either, meaning he didn't let himself get foiled by people and chose the right people to have in his life.

As LJ said, I've always also respected that he never got into the drug and alcohol scene. He always kept his head about him. Most of us did get into that especially in the 80s and 90s. It would've been totally acceptable and even expected, but Prince had other plans for himself and was responsible to his body and God and all the people he knew were counting on him over the years and all those he would help.

That's why I know he's with God. He fulfilled his purpose.

Also, I was a little younger than teens in the 70s, and I will tell you guys Prince's age had a real true cool about them and they were nice too. Prince always kept that. Because he was married to much younger women we sometimes forget that is the generation he came from.

So true about the drugs and alcohol thing. I'm a musician myself, I go to music school, and alcohol is almost like water to some of these guys. And the fact that there was an artist that lived without those unhealthy vices, is probably one of the MOST inspiring parts about him. You don't need to go on a billion drug trips to "get hip", or drink booze to "feel loose".

Quirky and weird are synonyms.

Actually, Hendrix was doing the ejaculating guitar thing back in the 60s.

Both Keith Richards and Dave Davies have both been given credit for starting the seminal, "Dude Looks Like A Lady" schtick that so many others after them — {Bowie and Prince included} — eventually elaborated on.

Prince also aped quite a few of Jagger's moves in his very early performances. He out-Micked Mick himself in a lot of ways. The animal print BVDs was one of those ways.

I'd always suspected that Prince's uncanny Mick-mimickery was one of the many reasons that the Stones invited them to open for them back then.

Of course, Prince gave his schtick his own quirky twist. But there is something to the saying — "There's nothing new under the Sun".

I love how Prince felt so comfortable in expressing himself. That help me, as a person to be able to do the same thing. I'm not any where near "outrageous" as he was, however. He wasn't afraid of what people would think of him. He did what he did and he didn't give a f about it. People I know have said things about him that he's weird, queer, odd...but I loved it. He wouldn't have been Prince without being...Prince lol. I do not think he was weird. He was quirky, he was unique, he was open to express himself, but mainly he was Prince.

His weirdness with entertaining to watch, but to me, the fact that a lot of the weirdness (maybe not all of it) had some serious validity to it made him interesting. And the fact the weirdness wasn't through and through, it had moments. He was bold, it's how I see it.

Based on those Google definitions and synonyms... I'd say he was both weird and quirky. He certainly seemed to resist the restrictive societal 'mould' and led life his own way and that's why we took notice and loved him so much... For giving us that inspiration, the possibility that we can all go off the beaten tracks if we want to... and that there is something else to life than what we see and that we are being presented with. That certainly was and still is an inspiration for me.

I was only quoting them

I really don't see him as weird.

Of course everytime I say that, something does pop into my head he's done that makes absolutely no sense to me, so I guess my statement is a moot point.

But honestly, I think he was pretty stable, I think that about all you can wish for.

As far as MJ is concern, I just found out some of the earlier "weird" antics in the media, he planted himself, he didn't realize one day it would get really out of hand in the media. Which makes me give P the side-eye and leads me back to I don't think he was really weird, which then I think of something and the whole process starts again.

PliablyPurple

Quirkiness and weirdness are attractive to me, so if he was, I never saw it as something negative. I did, however, live through most of his career as a fan and can say that in my experience, especially during the 90s, a lot of people left Prince because of his behavior. And yes, I do recall the word "weird" being used, usually preceded by "too". But I think a lot of that was misunderstood by the general public. And it had an effect on the record reviews he was getting at the time, too. Anybody recall the Rolling Stone review of Chaos and Disorder? Doesn't matter, we have links for that:

http://www.rollingstone.com/music/albumreviews/chaos-and-disorder-19960822

Tell me that these few opening lines don't come with some pre-conceived notions about P. No way in hell is this person going to give the music a chance:

His ongoing war of protest and whining against his record label is also reflected in the photos adorning the pages of the Chaos and Disorder booklet: a syringe with a dollar bill rolled up inside, a toilet with a heart floating in the water, and the master-tape vault inside Paisley Park Studios, framed by gold records. Before you hear a single note, you're prepped for a halfhearted transaction from a self-pitying celebrity.

That's from the opening paragraph.

Prince was unique and unafraid to be himself. I think a lot of people who did not know or understand him would say he is "weird". Prince was bullied as a child, so I think with his musical success, he was able to be himself and express himself, which he probably would not have been able to do if he was not famous, imo.

I dunno about the alcohol thing. In Rick James memoirs he wrote about how "straight" Prince was and he said that one time he walked over to Prince and poured some liquor down his throat, and Prince did not like that. I believe Rick James, he did not BS about stuff like that. You never saw Prince doing the "party scene" and drinking and smoking. If he did, he sure hid it from all of us. Wendy even said that one time, she brought along a beer to rehearsal and Prince got so mad, he fined her!! LMAO!! Now, only Prince would do that! lol

Yes! I've said the very same thing! You never saw Prince involved in any scandal, and with all the people he worked with and was acquainted with, that is pretty darn amazing!! He was a very private man. I don't know how he managed to do it, but he did. He wanted to be famous for his music, not for his personal life.

One of the reasons I'm a fan. Plus I think he just grew up and got wiser with age. This is what he told Entertainment Weekly in 2004:

“Look at this situation with the FCC after Janet: We’ve gone too far now. We’ve pushed the envelope off the table and forgotten there was a table. You can’t push the envelope any further than I pushed it. So stop! What’s the point?”

This is one reason I've never been much of a Madonna fan. At some point constantly trying to shock people is no longer interesting, or shocking. I see her in an outfit like this at the 2015 Grammys and just roll my eyes.
