I think the only "weird" thing about Prince was his NEED to make music and perform. Outside of that he was just a quiet private neat guy.

Which fits in with his lack of sleep. I think he once told Mavis Staples that sleeping was a waste of time. lol Not for me. I need my sleep.

.

I don't know how anyone can function without sleep!! I need to get my 8+ hours or I'm like a snail all day...dragging my arse around! LMAO!! lol

.

How did he manage to look so beautiful without sleep??!! He was not of this world, I tell ya! lol

Of course everytime I say that, something does pop into my head he's done that makes absolutely no sense to me, so I guess my statement is a moot point.

But honestly, I think he was pretty stable, I think that about all you can wish for.

As far as MJ is concern, I just found out some of the earlier "weird" antics in the media, he planted himself, he didn't realize one day it would get really out of hand in the media. Which makes me give P the side-eye and leads me back to I don't think he was really weird, which then I think of something and the whole process starts again.

As quirky or odd as P might have been was there ever any real scandal or drama around him? Certainly nothing to the level of MJ or even Madonna or plenty of other celebrities.

Yes! I've said the very same thing! You never saw Prince involved in any scandal, and with all the people he worked with and was acquainted with, that is pretty darn amazing!! He was a very private man. I don't know how he managed to do it, but he did. He wanted to be famous for his music, not for his personal life.

One of the reasons I'm a fan. Plus I think he just grew up and got wiser with age. This is what he told Entertainment Weekly in 2004:

“Look at this situation with the FCC after Janet: We’ve gone too far now. We’ve pushed the envelope off the table and forgotten there was a table. You can’t push the envelope any further than I pushed it. So stop! What’s the point?”

This is one reason I've never been much of a Madonna fan. At some point constantly trying to shock people is no longer interesting, or shocking. I see her in an outfit like this at the 2015 Grammys and just roll my eyes.

I've always thought there's something to the classic "artistic temperament." Like somehow genius and emotionally unusual go together. My dad is like Prince. A pinkie's worth of the same talent, but so many parallels. Bass, guitar, piano, all by ear, self taught. Even now at 78 my dad's emotions can be overwhelming. He feels it all, intense highs, lows, dreams, loves. And funny. Fall off your chair, "imagine if" hilarious.

I wouldn't trade him for the world, but ask me to relate to what a regular dad is like and I couldn't tell you. I do know it hurts him to know the world thinks he's weird, perhaps because he never got the validation Prince did that being a little different is not only ok, but very cool. I think somehow pain is a built-in part of it. You can't talk them out of it, in some way it's all steps along the same path leading to both joy and creativity. Does that make any sense?

Know what's cool? My dad loves Prince. He played in funk bands for many years--he was the guy playing keyboards in the back. cool

Yep....you're right! He was young and going for some shock value. I honestly wasn't offended, tbh. I am only three years behind Prince so maybe it was an "age" thing. And frankly, he is a very sexy man!

Madonna was definitely trying (way) too hard with her "display". And I just HAD to replace that image with something more.....ummmm...pleasant!

LovePaisley.....your description of your dad conjures up a wonderful image! That's really special that you and he shared a love of Prince. I bet you have some great memories of listening to/discussing music together. My dad passed in December of 1999 so I am a bit envious.....but in a good way!

We really do have some special memories. Weren't all girls from the 'burbs raised on Earth, Wind & Fire and Hendrix? Didn't we all work the soundboard in city bars while in high school? (My mom woulda shit a brick if she knew.) There's been so much talk since P died about how he knocked down racial barriers with his music. But it never occurred me that there were any. Someday I have to thank my dad for that. And send him some more links to Prince piano videos.

The 90s were a tough decade for Prince, both professionally and personally. Extreme highs and lows. No wonder he went a bit off the rails for awhile.

If by "quirkiness" you mean he followed his own instincts and intuition, and if by "weird" you mean he was a leader who broke new ground and didn't do what others did to conform, then he's both.

This. Interesting how being 'different' and standing out from a group of people (a common interpretation of the term 'weird') is often viewed negatively by the majority of people. Most of this thread is based on that interpretation too.

I don't know. My other favorite guy, says he only does 5 hrs a day himself. He's doing pretty good for himself.

If truth be told, in actual sleep, 5 hours sounds about right, the rest is generally staring at some damned screen for some reason or other.

Back to Prince's butt. One thing is for sure. Everybody learned, don't piss Prince off, you don't know what the heck he will do.

QUIRKINESS OR WEIRDNESS??

It's obvious that P has a lot of quirk and witty humor with his music and onstage persona. This is one of the things I LOVE most about him. He embraces the weird and he doesn't give a f about it. This is a question for the OG fans. Did he ever seem downright weird or bizarre? A lot of what he did, at least to me, seems funny, or like I said, quirky and witty. From the ejaculating guitar, to wearing animal print underwear, even riding on the back of some big ol security guard, got a good chuckle out of me the first time I saw it. Even his later stuff that he did like the name symbol change and writing slave on his face says to me that this is a guy who knows who he is, what he's about, and doesn't take any crap from anybody. I'm only saying this because after the 60's and 70's, with the "free love" movement, counterculture, and all of that, it seems kind of odd that these actions were considered "controversial" at the time.

Thoughts?

Actually, Hendrix was doing the ejaculating guitar thing back in the 60s.

Both Keith Richards and Dave Davies have both been given credit for starting the seminal, "Dude Looks Like A Lady" schtick that so many others after them — {Bowie and Prince included} — eventually elaborated on.

Prince also aped quite a few of Jagger's moves in his very early performances. He out-Micked Mick himself in a lot of ways. The animal print BVDs was one of those ways.

I'd always suspected that Prince's uncanny Mick-mimickery was one of the many reasons that the Stones invited them to open for them back then.

Of course, Prince gave his schtick his own quirky twist. But there is something to the saying — "There's nothing new under the sun

I find it interesting that when P performed in the yellow outfit everyone was shocked and ASSUMED they were seeing P's actual nekkid buttcheeks, deservedly so cuz they were meant to think that's what they were seeing when in actuality we know it was a fleshtone fabric....But in Madonna's case, it's clearly her actual buttflesh being seen.

It would appear that subsequent folks who "pushed the envelope" because they followed behind P weren't doing whatever he did.

Interesting...and real okeydoke on them by P...Lol

Prince was a Gemini.

According to the mythology of the Greek, the zodiac sign Gemini is known to be the ruler when it comes or sending certain messages to the heavens of the Gods. This may be the reason why people who are born under the astrological sign of Gemini are always on the go.

They are always eager to learn new things and the experience different things that they see. They are also known to be very mischievous and curious at times that is why they are characterized as people who are eager to learn every little specific detail about a particular topic.

People who are under the astrological sign of Gemini love talking, and that makes them a good writer. Some of them also have the passion to learn languages that are foreign to them. Geminis are very talented, that is why people around them are so fond of them.

People love talking about Geminis, along with the other astrological signs such as Virgos and Scorpios. Geminis have their own way of living uniquely that is why other astrological signs sometimes feel jealous of the way Geminis live and see their lives. They can also act detached and mysterious at times, that is why they are often misunderstood by a lot of people.

Some Geminis are genuinely quirky and weird. The sign’s mutability is hard for some individuals to handle. Those with strong Gemini traits often struggle with issues surrounding identity. Other Geminis merely represent their sign. Their changeable nature is just a part of their personality, not a sign of insanity.

The Emotional Aspects of Geminis

Geminis are known to judge other people by the way these people treat them. That is why they often create a bad impression about the other person, which can of course cause certain problems between their relationships with each other.

You will never see a Gemini feel moody or be discouraged about something, especially if you're not close to them. They are comfortable letting these aspects of themselves be seen by their family and friends. The reason behind this is because, they love giving people an impression that they are stress-free, wonderful and happy.

People who are born under the astrological sign of Gemini have endless energy that is why some people love to be around them all the time. They also have the ability to adapt in every situation that they come across.

Gemini people hate to relax and watch everything pass; they want to know everything about the world and the people around them. They always want to get involved in everything, which can sometimes make a Gemini too nosy.

Gemini people love attending social gatherings because they love communicating with other people. This is the reason why the astrological sign Gemini is known to be the most sociable sign of them all. The good thing about Geminis being communicative is that they talk about sensible topics.

They love sharing their thoughts and their knowledge to other people. Geminis are also known to be superficial and will share these things to you without even studying the situation first. That is why some people tend to think that Geminis are known to be the know-it-all astrological sign.

The Gemini Career

People who are born under the astrological sign of Gemini tends to multi-task every time they are in a hurry. This can often leave other things unfinished and can cause certain problems along the way.

That is why they need to learn how to focus on just one subject for them to successfully complete it. They have the power to be creative with things that is why they have the possibility to be successful in certain projects that they focus on.

Typically, most managers are born under the astrological sign of Gemini because they have the ability to motivate and manage every team that they handle.

They also have the tendency to become great sales personnel because they love communicating with different kinds of people, which will allow them to sell everything that they have in hand. Manipulating and persuading things are their things.

So You are Attracted to a Gemini

If you are attracted to a Gemini and you want them to feel the same way, then talking to them is the key. But you can't just talk about anything that you have in mind, because they want to talk about things that are totally interesting.

They want someone who is knowledgeable enough to talk about interesting news. Gemini people are very knowledgeable and intelligent when it comes to certain topics. Feel free to teach them new things because they will surely appreciate it.

Attracting a Gemini means being loyal and honest to them every time. You need to earn their trust and avoid breaking the trust that they have with you because once that trust is broken, you will have a hard time getting it back.

Dating a Gemini

Men who are under the astrological sign of Gemini are known to be adventurous, talkative, clever and very funny. If you are planning to date him, and then make sure that you have the right amount of energy to be with him.

A lot of women love Gemini men because of their enthusiasm when it comes to life. But you should avoid making him feel like he is yours, because they are not the kind of guy who like to be pinned by the rules of women. He also has the ability and passion to use words that will surely persuade you.

Prince quirkiness and weirdness was more of a personality trait. He was a singer and re-invention is a character seen in many musicians.
