The Star Tribune reports NPG Music Publishing and NPG Records, Inc. filed a lawsuit that alleges Tidal only had permission to stream Prince's latest album exclusively for 90 days. HITNRUN Phase One debuted as a Tidal exclusive in September 2015, a couple of months after the artist pulled all of his music from other streaming services. In May of last year, Tidal was the exclusive home to Prince's Rally 4 Peace concert in Baltimore after the death of Freddie Gray.

.

https://www.engadget.com/2016/11/17/prince-estate-tidal-lawsuit-streaming-rights/

That 90 days would have been up in December 2015 - when Prince was still able to file a claim himself against Tidal. Do you think anyone would've kept his music up against contract while he was alive? His lawsuits were well known, so this sounds to me like Londell and Koppellman being sloppy again. (See: Tribute concert organization; rezoning for Paisley Park).

Exactly.

This is bs. Prince was still working with Tidal the Monday before his passing in April, when he delivered Black Sweat live from Atlanta exclusively to the service. There's no way Tidal had violated Prince's terms at that juncture and there is plenty of evidence to prove it.

I agree with you both. Prince definitely had an agreement with Tidal and the fact he tweeted links to Tidal ALL THE TIME tells me everything was harmonious between them.

All this shade being thrown at Jay-Z is ridiculous.

--- Part of the agreement allowed material to go on other platforms as long as it appears on Tidal first. It is obvious the estate is trying to cut Tidal out complety.

It is funny how Prince passes away after starting this informal business relationship with Jay.I admit I've enjoyed some of his music but I've never trusted him like most of us dont.We all know a star is worth more dead. Been a Prince fan for 36 years but I have Spotify premium because something about the whole Jay Z/tidal thing has never felt right regardless of the sound quality or not. [Edited 11/15/16 2:43am]

Someone help me with my reading comprehension. Did Jay-Z just get implicated in Prince's death? Seriously? Someone needs to pull your plug, Poorlonelycomputer.

Very very interesting confused So jz was having a little trouble with Warners allowing Tidal to stream thier music. It's not up to the artist. Jz tried to get sprint to buy shares in Tidal but they didn't,hmm. Tidal was in trouble.

Despite what the Estate may or may not be saying, Prince was clearly working happily with Tidal right up until his passing. Even on the Monday before his death he gave Tidal 'Black Sweat' from Atlanta as the Purple Pick.

Right now, I'd trust Tidal more than the Estate, since Prince actually chose Tidal for a working relationship. The Estate however, is a different story...

Agreed. I think something else bigger is going down for the estate to suddenly claim this. These albums have been streaming since June 7th.. why is it that something suddenly being said about this?

I will say this since Prince's passing i am shocked that Tidal, Jay-Z/Beyonce hasn't done some sort of tribute for Prince.. a little concert, something? You would think after everything he did to support this shitty streaming service that is the least they could do.

Such myopia. As much as he meant to us, the world kept spinning when Prince died, Fam. And I doubt his support had as much impact as you believe. It certianly didn't move the needle the way Rihanna and Kanye's albums did.

I believe that the 'tribute' Tidal would want to do at this stage would be to release a new Prince album to compete with 4EVER.
More than that, I suspect that it was on the cards when they received the blocking lawsuit they're now looking to sidestep by getting their entitlement verified in court.

In the meantime all of this 'So and so and such and such snubbed Prince by not including a tribute' etc etc seems to be oblivious to the general opinion that the big tributes earlier in the year were a suckfest and that only the tributes by the 'folks in the house' matter.

I'm really getting pretty fed up with those whose 'grief' has become as entitled as others' (if it WAS others) HATE used to be.

How about a nice cup of STFU?

Agreed.

Tidal were already celebrating Prince before he died by agreeing to his terms and making his new material available. Without Tidal, I doubt we would ever have heard either of the HitnRun albums or any of the other exclusive tracks he delivered to the service, one of which (Black Sweat Live in Atlanta) appeared on the Monday before his passing.

Not seeing that my end. There are still at least 40 Prince albums available there. If any were to be taken down, I was anticipating TGE would be one as it has had a chequered history on rights but it's still there.
I don't expect Tidal to fold on their entitlement until they get a response to their petition to the court in Minnesota.

And my money's on their entitlement being confirmed.

The Bremer suit 'on behalf of' NPG seems to me to be an attempt to circumvent 'the course of dealings' with Tidal that was in effect and developing while Prince was in control.

The fact that they're asking for a jury trial seems to me to indicate that the suit is a public relations exercise designed to thwart Prince's 'will' on this matter in favour of the 'will' of Bremer to enter into the Universal deal they announced (also, in my view, as a public relations exercise).

I am no lawyer but expect this to be judged accordingly as a fanciful attempt to cicumvent Prince himself by introducing the 'judgement' of a jury which could be manipulated into seeing Tidal as an interloper rather than his appointed ally.

And without signing up to Conspiracy LLC, all of a sudden I am "suspicious' of that purple handkerchief in Maurice's pocket in the photo where Jay Z appears to be pointing to it nor did I like his wearing of a purple suit at the awards the other night.

As a matter of curiosity, does anybody happen to know when that photo of Jay Z and Maurice was taken?

But if hitnrun was exclusive to Tidal why was it on Google play?

Because Prince had the option of taking the music to other sites if he wanted to. From the court docs it was only a 90 day exclusivity deal. That is the reason I don't understand why the estate is carrying on like this. It appears that the music can be on Tidal and other platforms after the 90 days.

The court day has been set for Tidal' s claim for Dec 8th so we shall see.

4Ever is avalible in the Tidal store. I don't remember in the court docs Tidal saying they had another album I think they were saying they were promised a Hit and Run remix and a another project. They are making a claim for those two projects so I do not think they have them as of yet.

Tidal removed another album today sad lol I guess something in the water does not compute. They removed Rave unto. Still have Rave into. It would be nice if the estate would have thier own streaming service with all of Prince's music from the vault and everything else. 95% of my Prince music comes from Tidal so I'm sad it's getting removed but it's funny at the same time

Wow, sorry to hear that, Olivia. Now, since they are removing some of P's music, are the customers going to be compensated for that? I don't stream any music (yet), so not sure how it works.

I sincerely hope they get all this straigtened out, and put all of Prince's music in one place! I wonder if they will go with Spotify? You can also stream music on Amazon. I love Amazon--they're wonderful.

I meant that 4ever would probably be available for streaming as well at Tidal.

So now 4 albums have dissapeared? (3121, Emancipation, Rave Un2 and One Nite Alone)

Only good news is that they removed the "bootleg" live albums as well.

That's what I'm saying clover! Are we going to be compensated? When I signed up, those albums were there. I invested in Tidal instead of buying CDs . I've given them $60 so far. I was supposed to have access to 3121 and now I don't. I think customers should be reimbursed the value of every album they took down. They sent every customer an email today too. It said they are changing some policy's and have the right to cancel anyone's service that they feel violate there privacy

It said they are changing some policy's and have the right to cancel anyone's service that they feel violate there privacy

The updates to their terms of use has NOTHING to do with this - but your reimbursement for an album being removed idea is hilarious. They make no guarantees about specific content. If you're unhappy, your only recourse is s to cancel. That said, here's a thought - why don't you try listening to something othe than Prince for a change?
