I don't know P but I think he was probably more feminist than the average 70's male. I am used to men that are more wholeheartedly feminist (in our youth we were all vegan, Ethical Consumer was our bible and we all enjoyed fighting 'causes' (for many of the women that included feminist causes) - they are all truly beautiful people and a lot of them are still working for or running charities). Delivering the underwear for Gayle was not one of P's feminist moments for example.

"dumped this bag of metallic, multi-coloured underwear ... 'Prince said wear this or you're fired',” recalled Gayle Chapman"

Yeah, I see your point. Also, bro had no notion of how o buy women's underwear, either -- I think she mentioned everything was the wrong size, and she had to go buy everything in the proper size.

Prince seemed to be a little bit... confused on how to actually deal with women. I think he needed a little more training with Andre's mom. biggrin

Rule 1: Don't buy a woman's undergarments unless you actually know what freaking size she is.

Rule 2: Stop being a jerknerd.

Rule 3: No really, stop it.

i just read on some site that he seduced Chili from TLC and then kicked her out his limo. I hope it's just another rumor. I don't think he'd do something like that butyou never know.

Nothing surprises me anymore. confused I've read interviews with some of the women he dated, like Susannah Melvoin, and they seemed to be in agreement that he was like Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde at times..so maybe it is true.

ya, but that doesn't really sound like him. I know all the stories and believe them too, but to do that seems a bit out of character. hope it's not true. If it is true, he's damned lucky, some women who have had that happen to them have turned around and screamed rape just to get revenge.

I hear ya Peter....but I do remember that Charlene Friend story or whatever about her saying he psychologically/emotionally abused her....at the time I thought it was made up garbage...but who's to say there was a kernal of truth to it and maybe she embellished on it for effect (like the sex dungen thing, that was so silly). I don't know what to beleive anymore...but it doesn't change the fact that he is my favorite artist and he always will be. I love his music. wink

I don't know, the truth is a hard thing to get to just because people are so dishonest. I personally don't trust women because too many times they've turned around and said things that plain weren't true and to tell you the truth, sometimes that's just scary, like "holy shit, what am i dealing with here?" One girl tried to say i was going to come after my best friends mom, just wacko shit, that you can't see coming off the surface of a sweet looking girl. That's why i say prince was damn lucky if he did those things. I don't know what happened with Tyson and Pac but I wouldn't say it's impossible that those women made up lies after being sleighted in some kind of way. It's happened to me.

that's a great point, but sometimes there are no signs so i just avoid all of them these days and that's ok. But one of them was a family member who said some nutty shit that wasn't true, just makes you wonder "is the whole goddamned world crazy". anyway, point is, if P did act like that he's damned lucky, not too many black men go through those kinds of legal problems without major image damage if not complete career destruction. It's not the fifties anymore, used to be men actually could mistreat women and no one said a thing. These days it's too far the other way.

It seems that way...now more than ever. Listen to your intuition guide you with people. Sorry to hear about people being snakes....there are people out there like that unfortunatley.

intuition tells me to stay away from most people. Prince was lucky, like i say, not too many men in his position get through all those years without some kind of allegations being thrown at them. I believe some of the stories too, the one where he broke jill jones' arm, i believe. He coulda really been in trouble there. That's also probably where the image androgyny helped him, I mean, dude did not look like someone who would rape or hurt a woman. the thought of it is kinda funny because it's so at odds with his image.

I also heard he whipped out his johnson on a woman after chatting her up and she ran off. those are the kinds of situations that might seem normal in that lifestyle but it could really have caused problems. You really do need good people around you to keep you from getting yourself into problems sometimes.

Maybe the women were scared of his lawyers. Maybe they didn't have the resources for their own proper council. There could be a lot of underlying factors of why things didn't turn out that way for him. That is if anything like that happened but I really can't imagine Prince raping anyone or anything (but then again I did read about physical abuse stories ) I have to say, I do think Prince was emotionally abusive/controlling with many of his women, he seemed like a real insecure dude and men like that almost always tend to poision their relationships at least in his younger days. I have no idea what he was like in the last few years maybe he has changed. From the last Rolling Stone interview I read with him he seemed a lot nicer, even more feminist with his 3rd eye girl band so he seemed pretty cool to me. And yes Prince has been my "fantasy husband" since puberty so I have always saw him in the best light but I know he wasn't an angel ....but only a human man with flaws like the rest of us...but I will forever love him and no story that comes to light will ever change that.

well, i believe the stories just because of the sheer craziness of that lifestyle, it will make you do things out of character. I know, I've done things out of character when under pressure, i know what it's like but I don't know what that kind of pressure is like it has to be crazy. Elvis broke some woman's ankle at a party when she ran her mouth a little too much and he threw a cue at her. He also raped Priscilla if her story is to be believed. all things that the humble country boy was never raised to do but I could see how a man could really get lost in that world and his own myth. Prince and Elvis I believe were basically decent people living a crazy lifestyle that would warp most peoples brains.

That is a very good point....they had a warpped sense of reality the more famous they got the more isolated they became....that has got to be hard for anyones psyche. So I don't wanna judge Prince, I think deep down he was a good person but struggled with a lot of anger/trauma/psycholgical issues that he never got addressed...but I do think his JW conversion was an attempt to deal with all of that and remaining in MN a stratagy for staying grounded and somewhat connected to the world. At the height at his fame in the 80s I'm sure it really affects someone and whos to say how any of us would handle all that pressure.

i'm a musician, I can tell you i've gotten a few girls screaming and had a few good performances. just by that little bit, i could feel my head getting dramatically bigger, but for me that was a very small look and a very temporary look at what it must be like. It's crazy, it's a high and a reality changer that gave me a clue of how a guy could really lose himself so props to them for staying as humble as they did. they never did completely lose their humility like so many of todays pop stars who are just ridiculous and don't even have the talent to back it up.

The obvious answer is yes, all you have to do is listen to the lyrics. And then Prince himself said,
"This is a tale about control
Feline, that is
But please don't be a victim of the 30 second bite
Listen 2 the words carefully
They are meant 2 uplift and enlighten
All the members of the female persuasion
So that no woman ever becomes a slave
Yeah!"

Now whether or not he succeeded is up to you.

Thanks for sharing your perspective. Yes I too in my younger years had experiences where I was successful/things came pretty easily to me and it messes with your values and it can really get to your head and messing with your view of the world, so I know exactly what you are talking about....now imagine that turned up to 10x and you have a good idea what Prince must have been going through...not all of it bad but it can change you....

I think he definitely meant well, and it definitely is confused! (Probably could be said about a lot of things in Princeland.) This song just makes me laugh because it's so crazy and so over-the-top. I love it--one of my favorites, really. It's what the Brits would call daft. Makes me sad that this crazy, sweet spirit is gone from the world.

Elvis had a crazy lifestyle, whether you want to overlook that or not is your business. He found out priscilla was fucking Mike Stone and so he raped her and he cried while he did it.

I believe the prince story because it rings true, you can search for it on here, but I've read it in books too. never seen pics of her with a cast but she was never really that much of a celebrity.

It's only feminist when it comes from a woman. This is a man allowing a woman to have control. So it allows women to be empowered but on male terms.

.

I always thought the Spice Girls' 'girl power' was very much like this. They think they have 'girl power' but it is men who put them together, it was a man who gave them their names, men who marketed them, etc etc.

Certainly not enough to be an anthem.

I was DJing clubs from 99-02ish. Pussy Control was one of only 1/2 dozen Prince songs I could play and always get a good response, and of those 1/2 dozen it was the most requested.

The song became an underground club anthem for sure. And every DJ was looking for but couldn't find a vinyl copy. The guys I worked with were mad because I wouldn't let them mix with my promo vinyl copy but no way were they handling that colored vinyl!!

Not dead, not in prison, still funkin'...
