There was a 33 page thread on this just three weeks ago...

Guess it's like a button one pushes to get some easy traction.

Purple Rain, like Respect, I Can't Get No Satisfaction, Let It Be, Bridge Over Troubled Waters, What's Going On, Dance To the Music, etc. is such a classic that yes, you get tired of hearing it sometimes, but once in a while after a brewski or two, you fall head over heels in love with it again and just go like "What a great song! Wonderful song! I can't believe I've grown so jaded! Super song! Yeah, I've heard it too often but it's an INCREDIBLE song! A life reaffirming one! Essential! A must hear! One of the greatest EVAH! Wow!"

[Edited 6/28/16 14:47pm]

Yep. It's going to be like Hero or Greatest Love Of All, I Believe I Can Fly, You Are So Beautiful, The Impossible Dream..........on and on.

It makes me proud that Purple Rain will be in the pantheon of timeless classics! cool

I'm pretty muc over other people singing Purple Rain, although at the Prince Tribute in London at the weekend I found the Larry Graham/GCS version to be the most moving song of the evening.

.

That said, I'm never sick tired of hearing Prince sing it - either the recorded version or anytime live. He always managed to imbue it with so much feeling and passion, despite the huge number of times he must have played it.

It is his signature song... the song that he ended most of his shows with.. so of course we're going to hear it in tribute performances.. but I was tired of Purple Rain when he was alive to be honest.. but out of respect for him .. ive kinda grown to accept that we're going to be hearing it for a while...

one thing I don't like is how these modern singers sing though, I hate the vibrato that these kids sing with and it is not suited for every song, they don't know how or when to turn it off though. Purple Rain is not a song for that. But then I'm getting old.

Sorry to hear about your friend.I as well loss a friend albert mclamb omg he loved prince had the exact same motorcycle as prince.I got my leg burned on the damn thing. He was riding it when a drunk 15 year old ran a red light .

TBH I was sick of it by 1985. I can imagine the phases Prince went through behind it. But if he made peace with it, I sure can.

I'm sick of out of touch people crying in different posts under different names about how others sing his songs.I think its good to come out of your own box sometimes and see what else the world has to offer............Purple rain is his anthem.Others may sing it but,i dont think anyone has ever recorded it again. Now with that being said i hope stevie wonder finally sings it at the family tribute. Then its left alone.Even i would go to change.org or whatever and request that the estate NOT allow it borrowed EVER again.Thats what someone did with happy birthday for awhile. But,the estate wont do that because its going to be their biggest money maker.

The criticism is excessive. lol

Purple Rain is a power ballad so I was fine having somebody with a powerful voice singing it. Better than somebody mewling their way through it like a weak kitten.

And what????? You have posers posting under different names to i guess make some sort of point. And everytime they comment or he comments the same ones just happen to always respond biggrin And every post is a give away. They obviously write the way they speak. If i noticed im sure others have or maybe just dont care.

I'll never get tired of hearing Prince sing Purple Rain. He himself said in concert on more than one occasion (at least in recent years) that he never got tired of singing this song...

I'm okay if I never hear the song again -- on television, radio, streaming.

I have hundreds of versions of that song. Having it randomly come up in the mix is fine.

In my opinion, the best P concerts were the ones where PR wasn't performed. What I mean by that is that if he didn't play PR, then he was playing something that he would rather play -- perhaps a new song that no one in the audience had heard.

Bandwagon fans expect to hear LRC, LGC, PR and WDC at concerts. Most of us are/were NOT bandwagon fans. That's why when you listen to an audience recording and people are talking during a live version of "Power Fantastic" -- it's because they were not fans of Prince. Everyone shuts up as soon as one of those 4 songs plays.

This is how I became an aftershow girl. In fact, after the debacle of the first Chicago show in 2012, I said I didn't care if I never saw another arena show.

It's not that I don't like Purple Rain - I just didn't feel like I had to see him play it again. He did at the Myth shows (the last ones I saw), but I would've been okay if he hadn't.

Exactly. I only saw Prince a couple of handful of times. Once you've seen an arena show, what's the point in going to another? I'd rather go to an aftershow (which unfortunately the couple of times it looked like he might do it -- it turned into an afterparty instead.)

With that said, thankfully as fans we have those guys that went to so many of his shows and seemingly recorded everyone they went to. I'd give anything to give them a huge hug for all the joy that they have brought us. Their audience recordings at aftershows are better than ANYTHING Prince officially put out that was recorded live.

The song played most on the radio after Prince died..."Purple Rain." Various artists doing their tributes in concert..."Purple Rain." Watched BET Awards...someone sings "Purple Rain."

.

I've had enough. The song is a mid-level Prince song. My God, it is the sixth best song on the PURPLE RAIN album...and that album only has nine songs!

.

"I Would Die 4 U"

"Let's Go Crazy"

"Take Me With U"

"When Doves Cry"

"Computer Blue"

"Purple Rain"

"The Beautiful Ones"

"Darling Nikki"

"Baby, I'm A Star"

.

Look at that! The song Prince is most famous for is actually the sixth worst song on the album it is from!. And if we want to count all of the released Prince songs, I can name 427 songs that are better than "Purple Rain."

.

Man, unfortunately "Purple Rain" is the song that will forever be most associated with Prince. "Purple Rain" is like the Britney Spears song "Hit Me Baby One More Time." She can't escape that one, and Prince even in death can't get away from "Purple Rain."

i am NEVER tired of purple rain, NEVER. this is gospel music from minneapolis. the song means EVERYTHING to me. you and i will NOT get along. i can smell that. because all i ever wanted is to see you laughig in the purple rain. keep crying then. that`s ok. take your time.

Speak for yourself but I will never tire of it. Purple Rain as an album was a huge part of my childhood. I was born in 1982 and I can recall hearing the songs for the first time when I was around three years old, I remember Live in Sycracuse being broadcast for the first time by the BBC in 1985 or early 1986. My parents recorded it on VHS and I watched it repeatedly until the video would no longer play.

Purple Rain has been my entertainment, enjoyment, therapy and escape when I've needed it. And long may that continue.

I do find it incredibly sad that it's the only song a lot of people know him for, 'cause they sure have been missing out.

Purple Rain is like a good gospel song; if you are feeling it, you never tire of hearing it when it's sung in that vein. When someone like say, Jennifer Hudson sings it and sings it like she's in church, it's like a whole new experience of the song.

I think fans of the movie feel it because it was the song that was the emotional core of the whole thing. If it wasn't included, the movie would have been as superficial as a sexualized beach movie. Obviouosly, it wouldn't be entitled Purple rain either wink

Not sick of it. Just sick of it being covered like everybody else said before, sick of seeing it tattooed and sick of it being the only song along with the other essential Prince songs (LGC, WDC, RB, Kiss) that people know who claim to be the biggest Prince fans since birth.

Yup, wish there were more balance in the Prince songs that are played. The guy had sooooo much brilliant material. Let's be honest, is there one Beatles song that is the go to song for cover versions or radio play? No. The Prince catalogue should be treated similarly.

To be fair, probably every one of us is guilty of a lack of balance.

I went to, and played at, a couple giant Prince parties this month. Some of the hardest-core Prince fans in all of Texas were the DJs. You know how many post-1995 songs they played?

Zero.

I think Jennifer Hudson is great. I saw her on carpool karoake and it was one of my favorite ones. She has power in her voice, not some little shrimpy voice like gwen stefani or somebody...she can actually sing. Just cause she did Purple Rain gospel style. I coulda done without the hood on that outfit though

On his Chicago tour stop Prince brought out Dreamgirl Jennifer Hudson for an appropriately churchical duet (if you think I’m exaggerating, check 1:57, at which point Mr. Rogers Nelson actually utters the phrase “Take ’em to church”–
