Uhh, "Achy Breaky Heart," a bad haircut, and horrendous wardrobe are what catapulted Billy Ray Cyrus to fame. You think he still wants to be associated with that mess?

razz being a KY native myself, when Billy Ray came out with that song. I tortured my family with that song on constant repeat and took over the phone with constant radio requests to my local DJs for it to be played!...bet I was the reason DJs got caller ID in the early 90s! eek cool

Yup, wish there were more balance in the Prince songs that are played. The guy had sooooo much brilliant material. Let's be honest, is there one Beatles song that is the go to song for cover versions or radio play? No. The Prince catalogue should be treated similarly.

To be fair, probably every one of us is guilty of a lack of balance.

I went to, and played at, a couple giant Prince parties this month. Some of the hardest-core Prince fans in all of Texas were the DJs. You know how many post-1995 songs they played?

Zero.

{Empty set}

Heck, even I didn't go any newer than 1989 for any of the songs I played. Boo me! (Although I promise that the next time I play live, no matter where, "Rock and Roll Love Affair" will be played!)

If not for one of the cover bands playing "Art Official Cage" (God Bless The Breakdown!), you'd have thought Prince passed away 20 years ago.

Heh. Yeah, i'm a little tired of it, mostly because I wish people would finf more o f his songs. On the other hand, it IS the one that comes to mind when you say Prince, so I'm not too annoyed.

I am very tired of it. Don't want to hear it again but on a DVD of Prince singing it and I may go to the bathroom then. I was tired of Purple Rain when Prince was tired of it.

Purple Rain is a great song though, and it was the last song he ever played. Who's to say it's the sixth worst song on the album anyway, that's just your opinion. I think this is all just a classic case of 'I'm a edgy hipster who hates popular stuff".

I'm with you as far as hearing another musician try to cover "Purple Rain" for the upteenth time. It's too obvious, and Prince was never that. If members of The Revolution end up doing a tribute at some point, I hope they do some songs from Parade, and although I seriously doubt it would ever happen, I'd be blown away if they played an unreleased song or two from the Dream Factory album.

There's a video on YouTube of Santana playing "Last December" in tribute to Prince. It's very touching that one of Prince's influences growing up would know his catalog that well. Those are the kind of tributes I'd like to see more of.

Don't play what's there, play what's not there.

The song played most on the radio after Prince died..."Purple Rain." Various artists doing their tributes in concert..."Purple Rain." Watched BET Awards...someone sings "Purple Rain."

.

I've had enough. The song is a mid-level Prince song. My God, it is the sixth best song on the PURPLE RAIN album...and that album only has nine songs!

.

"I Would Die 4 U"

"Let's Go Crazy"

"Take Me With U"

"When Doves Cry"

"Computer Blue"

"Purple Rain"

"The Beautiful Ones"

"Darling Nikki"

"Baby, I'm A Star"

.

Look at that! The song Prince is most famous for is actually the sixth worst song on the album it is from!. And if we want to count all of the released Prince songs, I can name 427 songs that are better than "Purple Rain."

.

Man, unfortunately "Purple Rain" is the song that will forever be most associated with Prince. "Purple Rain" is like the Britney Spears song "Hit Me Baby One More Time." She can't escape that one, and Prince even in death can't get away from "Purple Rain."

It was also the last song the guy ever sang. And from what everyone that was there said he sang his heart out. That makes it even more sad.

FUNKYNESS

People who lack a full appreciation and knowledge of the vast expanse of Prince's brilliance fall back to Purple Rain for every reference to him. It irritates me that this song, Kiss, and 1999 is all they really know so that is all we hear over and over - at every tribute, from every so called friend and peer. I am over it - that is why I didnt watch the BET thing and dont plan to.

Yeah, I'm sooo not a fan of the over-singing, vain-popping hollering she does. Great voice, awful style.

Anyway, I always sat down when he sang PR. I was always like, "Great! Break time".

Maybe the first time I ever saw him in person I watched...but it was only because my 18 year old self just couldn't take my eyes off him.

I don't think that "Purple Rain" is the best song on the album either, but it is the obvious choice for others to sing when they are honoring Prince. First of all even if it wasn't his biggest hit, it is still probably the song most widely recognized as a Prince song. Also, It is G-Rated. Can you immagine someone singing "Little Red Corvette" which is to sexy, or "Let's Go Crazy" which is inappropriate in a time of mourning, or "When Doves Cry" which is a commentary on disfuntional family relationships. "Purple Rain" is a moving, uplifting gospel song. It is appropriate for the occasion.

With that said, I have to agree that even though it is the most appropriate choice, no one else should ever even attempt to sing it. I wish I could unsee Madonna's performance of it. I wish others would stop singing it because Prince is the only one who could ever do it right.

I'm okay if I never hear the song again -- on television, radio, streaming.

I have hundreds of versions of that song. Having it randomly come up in the mix is fine.

In my opinion, the best P concerts were the ones where PR wasn't performed. What I mean by that is that if he didn't play PR, then he was playing something that he would rather play -- perhaps a new song that no one in the audience had heard.

Bandwagon fans expect to hear LRC, LGC, PR and WDC at concerts. Most of us are/were NOT bandwagon fans. That's why when you listen to an audience recording and people are talking during a live version of "Power Fantastic" -- it's because they were not fans of Prince. Everyone shuts up as soon as one of those 4 songs plays.

Yeah this song is pretty much becoming the "Thriller" of Prince songs.

I'd say it's the "Freebird" or "Stariway to Heaven" and, yeah, I'm pretty tired of it myself.

Or his Satisfaction or his Like a Rolling Stone or his Sexmachine or his Purple Haze...

I never liked the song and I've said why on a few occasions on here. a girl in my high school died when this was a hit and I sort of linked that morbid feeling with it. But it is the song most linked to Prince and the one guaranteed to work for him in any circumstance. When doves cry was the bigger hit but it doesn't quite have the same resonance with the average listener and it's a poor live song choice. He had tons of great songs though.

one thing I don't like is how these modern singers sing though, I hate the vibrato that these kids sing with and it is not suited for every song, they don't know how or when to turn it off though. Purple Rain is not a song for that. But then I'm getting old.

This is how I became an aftershow girl. In fact, after the debacle of the first Chicago show in 2012, I said I didn't care if I never saw another arena show.

It's not that I don't like Purple Rain - I just didn't feel like I had to see him play it again. He did at the Myth shows (the last ones I saw), but I would've been okay if he hadn't.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

In Holland, Purple Rain made the # 1 spot while When Doves Cry didn't. So what's the biggest hit depends on where you live.

I don't know, maybe I'll cover it. I still think it is a great song, a rock anthem mixed with black gospel and country. Also, the piano version he did in the movie and on certain live performances is poignant and beautiful, one of the more rivetting scenes in the movie actually.

To your point, mainstream outlets are only going to play Prince's best known WB material. You ain't gonna hear Empty Room, Beautiful Strange or Way Back Home or any other non-corporate songs any time soon....that's not the way the machine works.

Don't agree, I'll never tire of it because it's a song that I can soak in, if that makes sense.

And hearing him saying "I love singing this song!" in several live performances makes me love it even more.

I have had enough of others' attempts to sing it, however.

The criticism is excessive. lol

Purple Rain is a power ballad so I was fine having somebody with a powerful voice singing it. Better than somebody mewling their way through it like a weak kitten.

There was a 33 page thread on this just three weeks ago...

Guess it's like a button one pushes to get some easy traction.

Purple Rain, like Respect, I Can't Get No Satisfaction, Let It Be, Bridge Over Troubled Waters, What's Going On, Dance To the Music, etc. is such a classic that yes, you get tired of hearing it sometimes, but once in a while after a brewski or two, you fall head over heels in love with it again and just go like "What a great song! Wonderful song! I can't believe I've grown so jaded! Super song! Yeah, I've heard it too often but it's an INCREDIBLE song! A life reaffirming one! Essential! A must hear! One of the greatest EVAH! Wow!"
