How very Prince to make a film promoting the 3121 album and kick the trailer off with "Guitar"...which wasn't on that album.

As far as I'm aware, Guitar wasn't even recorded until a year after "3121" came out.

Meaning that this trailer comes from the "Lotusflow3r" edit of the movie and not the original edit.

That can't be right as "Guitar" likely comes from the same sessions as "3121", "Planet Earth", "From the Lotus", "Boom", "Back to the Lotus" etc.

Either way...he showed a film clip for 3121 (which didn't include Guitar) at the launch of Lotusflower (which didn't include Guitar). I'm not complaining about it I just think it's funny, and a very Prince thing to do.

Oh, no I know. I am just saying it kinda makes a little sense and provides maybe a tiny bit of insight into the recording process of 3121. It's entirely possible that "Guitar" was meant for 3121, he felt like it didn't fit - as he so often felt about strong tracks, and decided to use that and "Future Baby Mama" as the flagship songs carrying the rest of Planet Earth.

I personally haven't seen any evidence of this re: Guitar and some of your other info is incorrect.

Boom was recorded in 2008 with Cora & Josh Dunham.

Planet Earth is thought to have been recorded in either early 2007 or 2006. Given that the "3121" album was sequenced and delivered in 2005 (at the absolute latest, Jan 2006), there's no way it was from those sessions. I heard the entire "3121" album in mid February, 2006. Mixed, sequenced, mastered, at the Universal Records listening party where it was clear that a full promotional plan was in effect, which was at least 6 weeks work from the record label. Plus, "Te Amo" was released the previous December. Very unlikely that this song was done in the 3121 sessions.

From the Lotus.. and Back To The Lotus are from the 3121 sessions, correct.

As for Guitar it's really unlikely it's from the 3121 sessions. At the earliest it's believed to have been recorded in 2006 and at the latest, January 2007.

Remember - the version of Guitar that was first released in February 2007, the so-called "demo" version that was put up on 3121.com, had no live drums, it was all drum machines, and sequenced bass loops and synths. It wasn't a live recording, it was a more minimal solo studio recording compared to the "Planet Earth" version. Unquestionably, the live recording on "Planet Earth" is a much superior version. Hence why the original download version gets referred to as a "demo" even though technically it's not. I mean, the download version isn't even really mixed or mastered that well in comparison to the Planet Earth version.

Which makes it very obvious - if Prince already had the version with Michael B and Sonny T, why would he release the solo version 6 months before that?

It's very clear to me that Prince recorded the solo studio version of Guitar in late 2006 or early 2007, and then re-recorded it with Michael and Sonny in the spring of 2007. I think it's also incredibly likely that he looked at all of our reactions to the original version of the song here before re-recording it. One of the things we all said at the time was that for a song called "Guitar", it didn't really have enough guitar on it.
