I just heard this for the first time on Tidal after years of hearing about it. This is the underground funk album we were promised! The Time (Cherry Cherry, the skits), P-Funk (Big Fun),Tower of Power (New Power Soul), Curtis Mayfield (Count the Days), Teddy Riley (The Good Life). And I have a soft spot for hilarious album skits that feature someone laughing hysterically (New Power Day). Prince should have done more comedies. Maybe something with Chris Rock.

great album, lots of fun. the only thing i would wish for is a version of it with more prince

vocals. louder in the mix at least.

Get Wild
New Power Soul
Count The Days

The Good Life

Cherry, Cherry
The Return of The Bump Squad
Big Fun
Hallucination Rain
The Exodus Has Begun

my favorit bits are the 'good book' bit toward the end of Bump Squad, the electric violin
solo in Hallucination Rain, the whole crazy bass bits and screaming/moans on Big Fun, all
the insanity that is The Exodus Has Begun and even the opening skit with the cute xylo.

The next occasion I have to proffer an opinion on Exodus, I'll just nod sagely and pronounce, "It fucking bangs." That works. cool

I remember this record store opened in a strip mall in the philly Suburbs near us and I was shocked to see the place packed with bootlegs. This had to be the late 90s. I got to talking with the guy working there about Prince and he metnioned Exodus. When I told him I never heard of it he said, "It's big and funky and it sounds like Prince is playing as if his life depended on it!"

I finally found it online and ordered it and I remember the day it came, running home and just being blown away by it. I love the vibe, the performances, the production. It's one a go back to again and again.

Any Exodus fans out there?

IMO, three of the essential Prince masterworks are on Exodus. Count the Days, The Exodus Has Begun, and Hallucination Rain. Quiet as it's kept, I love Cherry Cherry too!

The absolute venom Prince has for WB Records on The Exodus Has Begun is beautiful to me. I hate the "scratching" tho.

Behold the children of the New Power
Are more and mightier than U (Mighty, mighty)
U that have scorned and held back the inevitable

All that is good in the eyes of heaven
Will rebuke your powder monkey ways
(Have mercy, mercy, mercy)
And let that same heaven have mercy
When the wrath of the sun knocks upon your gate

Also fwiw, I personally LOVE Sonny T.'s contributions to Prince music.

We all want the stuff that's found in our wildest dreams.

Unbelievably great album. The final song is so EPIC. I used to attempt to turn friends on to its brilliance, but they thought I was nuts. One of my favorite Prince albums. One of my favorite Prince songs.

This was not released in the US, so I remember paying a lot to get this from Europe, Germany I think.

This, paired with the Gold Experience, and other songs from his era like Days of Wild made for an extremely funky mid90s, when no one else was doing funk anymore.

I never knew how much input "Tora Tora" had on the record. I had always assumed he played a band member role, with everyone having equal say, rather than his usual ringleader role.

I hated the scratching, too. Considering he was such a perfectionist when it comes to instruments, he could have used a really talented DJ to do the scratching because turntables ARE an instrument ...or used to be. They shouldn´t have used any scratching at all.

And it´s funny because in the Get Wild video they mock a traditional DJ and use CDs instead.

Sonny ´s contributions and influence on Prince´s music cannot be mentioned often enough. He had a huge influence on Prince and almost became a band member but Prince chose Brownmark instead.

Have you read Dave Hill´s Pop Life? He interviewed Sonny before he became a band member. Quite fascinating interview in hindsight.

Prince made him lose weight, which he did, then chose Brownmark without even telling Sonny. lol

Sonny and Michael were the greatest rhythm section ever.

Well, you said "reflections" so...

My parents' high school graduation gift to me was a road trip to Minneapolis. My dad drove a friend and me there to make all the "Prince landmark" stops. It was an amazing and overwhelming trip for a 17-year-old fan.

One of our stops was the NPG store in Uptown. That's where I bought Exodus on CD. I had no idea what it sounded like, I just liked the cover art (also bought The Sacrifice of Victor photobook, a t-shirt and a copy of NPG magazine). We played that CD in the car the rest of our time in Minneapolis and on the ride home to Ohio. We fluctuated between laughing our heads off and bobbing our heads...hard. So much FUNK on that album. One of my favorites, probably top 5 (today anyway).

The Peach & Black podcast review on Exodus is great, too. I love their appreciation for the humor on this album.

After reading 2 pages of replies, I have to say that this record is highly OVERrated on this forum. Get Wild on record is nowhere near as great as it was live. That's what you get from playing songs live before the record is out: the studio version can only disappoint, especially with a kickass jam like this. New Power Soul is a nice little instrumental, nothing special. Count the Days and The Good Life are excellent! Cherry Cherry makes The Arms of Orion look like a masterpiece...yuck...fuck! Return of the Bump Squad and Big Fun are just Prince doing the whole George Clinton catalogue all over again, in other words: nothing new. Hallucination Rain is weird. The Exodus Has Begun is excellent! And then I'm not even talking about those stupid segues that waste a good twenty minutes on this one hour disc. So what does that leave us with? Three good tracks. Wow. And that is exactly why it was so frustrating and so interesting to be a Prince (Artist?!?) fan in the 90s: there were always moments of greatness on albums that were total failures.

Exodus is HELLA tight, funky and just damned awesome. I have been listening to it on the daily, and a few weeks ago I got to listen to it on a high-end McIntosh system driving B&W 800D monitors at an ungodly volume. It. Was. Heavenly. Literally.

I think it's the best-sounding Prince album ever. I would love to hear it on vinyl.

"The Exodus Has Begun".....damn. That song is fiya. If anything Prince album should have been a hit, it's this one.
