Agree to disagree. No chance Prince was "greatest ever". I stand by what I wrote. Prince was one of the greats but will never be thought of as the greatest outside this silly forum. I love Prince's music. For 30+ years I have but I have no qualms about saying Freddie Mercuey was a greater vocalist. No qualms about saying Marvin Gaye was more soulful and deeper. No qualms about saying Prince couldn't play guitar like Hendrix. He couldn't dance or thrill like Michael Jackson. He isn't as funky as JB and George Clinton. Prince could do it all but that doesn't mean he did it all better.

i keep comparing him to the "pound for pound" greatest fighter, Sugar Ray Robinson. General consensus is he is the best but there are always people who'll say "he lost so many fights" or something. Thing is, Ray put everything together better than anyone else, there were guys who were better at any one or maybe even a couple departments but they had weaknesses in other. Same with prince, jon Bream called him the best all around pop star ever and he's right. so what he couldn't dance like Michael, Michael couldn't play anything, often relied on lipsynching and had to have a lot of help to do anything. He wasn't capable of being autonomous. Hendrix couldn't sing, was a great showman but not a dancer, only played one instrument well, etc.., George Clinton is a horrible guy to compare Prince to, could he play anything? I've never seen him with an instrument, come on. And as much as I love Elvis, he couldn't touch Prince as an instrumentalist and he didn't write.

Seems to me you put greater value on quantity than quality. Of course these are only opinions and a matter of taste. Prince was a great amalgum of many different artists. He wore his influences well. But if I want to hear Soulful music- and even though Prince cut a lot of Soul music- I have to go with Marvin Gaye. That's one example. If I want funk I turn to JB, George Clinton or even Rufus Thomas. Rock? Bruce, Queen. Metal? Dio. Jazz? Miles and Coltrane. Blues? Albert King. Pop? MJ. One great thing about Prince music is I don't have to be in any particular mood to listen to it.

Stevie was probably thrown in at the last minute. This was billed as a Madonna tribute the past 3 weeks.

We can argue forever, just like people still argue who was greater, elvis, chuck, little richard. so much of it is what criteria you are using, i'll say this though, you got to have more than one thing usually. Lots of very talented people who could rival anyone in one thing, it's usually not enough. Prince did so many things great, and he just happened to be a freak of nature who by most accounts did not sleep much and worked harder than anyone else in this style of music. I compare him more with people in other styles of music in some ways, he's the only guy in pop who you can compare to ellington or Beethoven without looking ridiculous.

Don't underestimate those Minnesota winters that forced him to stay inside in the warmth and be more compelled to practice and record.

that's the theory behind the whole minneapolis sound but prince was just a freak of nature, in fact, i'm sure his workaholism plays a big factor in his demise. Some people cannot accept limits and life teaches us the hard way...Ali fought way too long because he thought he was exempt from the laws of physiology and he paid for it.

Very true. Sir Paul McCartney is on tour and his voice isn't as strong as it was two years ago but he's an ageless rocker. The reviews
Acknowledge his voice not being the same.

Mick Jagger has one of the strongest voices in rock and he's not the same. Roger
Daltrey has lost some of his skills.

mccartney was phenomenal for his age a couple years ago, but time is bound to stop anyone, the best they can do is switch gears as Johnny Cash did. He could hardly sing at all in the end and yet his voice was more powerful than ever. Like an aging boxer, you got to compensate with other things than the physical.

because it shouldn't have ever happened, it's disgusting really. i don't care if people are fans of madonna, but i am a fan of prince and you don't just get anyone to do something like that for him. i know she's an icon for many people but I could give a shit. She's nothing to me.

Stevie sounded worse than madonna last night. Prince was peerless. Nobody worked as hard or was as gifted.

Total crap. Stevie is every bit as talented as Prince is. His musical legacy will last longer than Prince's too. Marvin Gaye was a greater artist than Prince. Prince never came close to creating an album on par with "What's Going On". Michael Jackson was a greater entertainer and singer. Freddie Mercury was a genius. Bob Dylan is more important and a superior songwriter. Jimi Hendrix blows Prince away as a gutarist. And it goes on. Prince was a great musician and songwriter but people make too big a deal about his ability to play multiple instruments. Prince is one of the greats but it's just fanatacism to act like he was peerless.

Useless diatribe to cover the fact you somehow feel the need to defend a performance you did not see.

All the people you mention brought something great and essential to music, they are all among my favorite artists of all time. Prince is numero uno with me because he was able to distill the essence all of them, just by himself in a studio.Doesn't lessen anyone else's talent but I think even Stevie places Prince above himself ultimately.

I agree. When comparing Prince to these other artist he appears to be in a class of his own because he has demonstrated an ability to cover a large genre of music and do it well. He could sound pop/rockish, blues, soft rock, jazz, country,R&B. Songs like Soft&Wet, When Doves Cry, Tambourine,Strollin, Adore and Courtin Time are all vastly different. His falsetto was always very soulful to me. Upon Prince passing away my son asked me What category would Prince's music fall into? I was unsure of what to say. I said well, I think he needs his own category . A genre called Prince.

Because it was Madonna's tribute and that's apparently the way she wanted it. When the fuck do you ever see Stevie Wonder just standing somewhere singing without instruments???

He was much worse than Madonna. It's not either one's fault the "tribute" was bad. It was Billboard's fault for not honoring Prince properly. Fuck Billboard!

Stevie Wonder is one of the main reasons we had Prince. Prince would tell you that himself. No need to disrespect the man who laid the blueprint.

How would you, or anyone else, know how long his musical legacy will last compare to anyone else's? You have some power to see into the future?

You know who's more "important?"

Are you just a fool or just a troll?

This is kind of ridiculous although I'm not sure whether or not it's sarcasm. lol

R u kidding me????? Music consumed Prince. His work ethic makes james brown look like a slacker. One man, thousands of songs. In-cred-a-ble!
Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.
