cool

I admit it, I've been downloading stuff like crazy!

I've seen/heard SO much stuff for the first time lately, I was never in that loop with the bootleggers and such. So I am VERY grateful people are sharing stuff freely right now.

I have a love hate relationship with all the YT stuff. Part of me is really enjoying it because as a younger P fan, I never got to experience any of the early shows/eras. Unless they were recent appearances within the last 15 years or so (or official releases), I haven't experienced any of it. This is all new to me. So it's really awesome to watch everything I'm coming across. However going against his wishes is where I'm torn confused

.

It's a tough one. I'm presuming the majority of folks would've wanted to respect the man's wishes while he was alive, and maybe even now.

.

Other bands I'm into invariably have their stuff leaked onto the internet either prior to release, or simply uploaded for easy download following its release. Me, I love actual product - you know, where you get to read the liner notes etc - so I always buy the physical product when I can.

.

I'm not sure what the law is for when music is performed on another company's product: say, Prince appearing on Letterman. Who owns that? Prince or Letterman?

.

I have to hold my hands up though, as much as I do feel genuinely emotional about Prince's untimely passing and shocked how much it's actually hit me, I have enjoyed these hundreds of uploads appearing, stuff I've never ever seen, stuff that has left me excited and sad in equal measure. I'm also pleased that, if only for a short time, it's given Prince some incredible exposure regarding his genius, his diversity and raw bloody talent.

Part of me is glad that his stuff is being pulled off YouTube, but only part of me and only with this in mind: I want whatever is out there to be "official".

So with that being said, I really wish for the day when the Estate or WB or any combination of entities creates and maintains a proper PRINCE YouTube channel or website.

Wouldn't that be cool? Hope they are listening.

After a couple of weeks of endlessly indulging in concert clips, interviews, promo videos and so on, a lot of the stuff I've been either listening to in work or watching at home is being removed or deleted.

Should I be feeling guilty of consuming stuff in a way Prince wouldn't have wanted me to consume it?

.

It always confused me why there was so little Prince stuff on YT back in the day, until I videoed a bunch of clips from the 2007 O2 show I attended (I almost got kicked out of the venue for doing it - only the head of security for the section I was in saved my bacon!), uploaded the clips to YT and then had a message literally hours later saying YT had been contacted by the artist I'd bootlegged and they had deleted my video, and warned me that another episode would see my account suspended.

.

I was like eek

.

The sad thing is about all the pc I had those clips on died and I was never able to retrieve them. Had there been such a thing as the cloud back then I'dve stored it there. Shit, YT basically was the cloud.

.

Anyway, lots and lots of stuff is beginning to disappear from YT now - at least, the stuff I've been watching. I imagine there's so much out there right now that it'll take time to enforce it.

.

You guys understand that you don't need youtube, right? You understand most of these clips have been ripped from other formats. My suggestion to you is just RUN to facebook. Because you know why? They can't touch those clips, especially the streaming. I repeat: THE ESTATE.WEBSHERRIFF ETC CANT TOUCH IT.

Trust, everyone has archived the majority of this on other video/audio streaming formats, it is where it started from. Fuck youtube, get to FB & get to ripping, peace.

Several people I know have had their Prince Facebook videos taken down. It tends to happen less in closed or secret groups.

Prince was wrong when he declared the "internet dead", and completely shot himself in the foot by removing clips from YT. But right now this digital love will go unabated thanks to posters uploading footage at a rapid pace, satisfying his longtime fan base and making casual fans into avid ones.

All the stuff being uploaded on YT has been where I have found true comfort. So many of these songs, live shows, videos that I have not seen for years and many never at all! This is what FREEDOM really feels like and it has been awesome to have so much finally available to share with others and enjoy for myself. Prince's music needs to be out there for the world to enjoy!

The greatest live performer of our times was is and always will be Prince.

Prince on YT FAQ

Would Prince approve of the deluge of videos made available upon his death?

I don't think so, and supposing he did, not forever.

Does Prince's family/Trust approves of the deluge of videos made available upon his death?

They were busy attending to other more pressing matters so it's not like they could do much initially. At most, they'd let it happen to let people pay homage, but I don't see them allowing this free-for-all forever, especially in light of Prince's stance on the matter while he was living.

I'm very bereaved and just need to post this stuff, ok?

Thank you for doing so, I completely understand. Did I thank you? I did but once again, just in case, thank you. However, whole albums and released tracks are pushing it -- if you care about Prince's legacy, maybe make sure that the people who will take care of it get some money for the Prince museum. Unreleased and live material are temporarilly another story in my book, as there are few other ways to let others in on the greatness that was Prince with respect to this material.

I totally agree with you on the bolded parts. It´s one thing to post live videos and old promo videos but if one really respects his legacy, then commercially available albums and singles should not be posted or downloaded.

However, there are several albums that are no longer available, and probably won´t ever be available again, and I wouldn´t want younger fans to miss out on those gems, so I´m a bit torn when it comes to posting those albums. And I have no problem with outtakes being posted because as far as I´m concerned, I´d always gladly pay money to buy a song that was previously only circulating as an outtake.

.

And one more thing....just because Prince was against Youtube in his lifetime does not mean that he´d be against it after his death. It´s a whole different situation and I know younger listeners who discovered him on Youtube and who never would´ve gotten interested in him and his legit releases if it wasn´t for Youtube.

.

And, personally speaking, if it wasn´t for all the bootlegs in the 90s, my interest in Prince would´ve been there but I probably wouldn´t have spent as much money on his music and liveshows as I have.
