Prince gave the director of Purple Rain several tapes with around 100 songs on them before filming.

The director said he still has the tapes in his storage unit. What do you think those tapes contain?

Mr. Magnoli has mentioned this before, about Prince having around 100 different songs to choose from for Purple Rain. I believe he even said it on the bonus features on the Purple Rain bluray and DVD for the 20th anniversary edition.

.

It's probably not hard to guess, since books like The Vault, and DMSR catalog that time period and the studio sessions - day by day and song by song, which songs might be on those tapes. Any number of those 1982 and 1983 sessions' material could be on those tapes.

.

I still want to hear "Wednesday".

What are some of the known titles that we know about but that never have been leaked?

I would tend to believe the director who stated he received the tapes.

I'm pretty sure the 100 song rumor is BS too... just part of the mythology.

It's not really a rumor if the guy who made the film says he has the tapes with the songs. That would just be a lie and not a rumor. Given how prolific Prince was and the director has mentioned this multiple times I would tend to believe him.

Albert Magnoli mentioned 100 songs but Bobby Z. once told Uptown magazine that they were so busy back then that there aren´t really that many outtakes from that era. At least not that many songs that we haven´t heard yet. Magnoli was probably given some older music, too, not just brandnew material.

We´ve had a big discussion about this on the org but it was such a long time ago.

Umm... you can believe what you wish but it's a rumor because people spread it and it's BS because he said it. All my opinion, of course, but there's not one real shred of evidence it's true.

Yeah I don't totally buy that. Magnoli seems to take a lot of credit in that article. I'm sure he does deserve a lot, but he makes it sound like he chose the songs for the movie and I'm sure Prince had a major say in it. But he was smart how he made all the songs move the story forwrad. I always felt like that film was directed really well..good cinematography, etc.

I think Magnoli says there were 100 songs, when what he means was there were 'a lot'.

He gets details wring and tends to embellish. That's my summation of reading interviews with him.

Like this: He says that heard Purple Rain for the first time while the band was at First Avenue, and they decided that would be the title for the movie, etc... This had to be August 3, 1983 that he's talking about. You can't tell me that 3 months before shooting, that show which they brought a mobile recording truck in for, that things weren't mostly set?

One night during this process, I'm in the mezzanine at First Avenue. Prince is onstage and they're playing this new song I hadn't heard. I knew in a few bars It was the song. I went downstairs and asked Prince after, "What is that song?" He said, "I just wrote that with the band." I said, "That's the song, the anthem song!" He said, "Oh. It's called 'Purple Rain.' Can we name the movie after that?" The script was untitled at that point. I said, "Yep, that's the name." That's how easy and crazy it was.

I would say that it's likely he's also talking about songs by The Time and Apollonia 6..... And maybe while the script was being written, others may have had songs too? Like Jill?

If Prince played Magnoli say 30 of his own songs (which is likely), 10 songs by The Time, 10 by A6, and then a handful of others like Dez's track Modernaire which may have been 1 of 3 or 4 Dez songs that were offered.... Then you're inching closer to 60. And maybe Prince wanted initially to do the actual scoring as well and also gave Magnoli a ton of instrumentals to listen to?

100 defo seems like an exaggeration, But 50-70 isn't implausible.

Just because they were submitted to the director of Purple Rain doesn't mean it was only Purple Rain era music.
