I heard an interview with Brent Fischer on BBC 5live Friday morning, he said that out of every 25 songs him and his father (Clare) contributed to only 1 was released. He also advised he believed the Vault may be destroyed as per Prince's wishes.

I do hope not, i belive the Vault should be used solely to produce income for the charities Prince was involved in and give the fans a complete body of work as possible to celebrate this great man.

Shouldn't we also include stories about his legacy/will/Paisley Park here so that we won't have two or three threads about what Tyka is going to do? Threads are appearing and disappearing faster than you can read them and it's getting a bit confusing!
Oh never mind, I see you already did that. thumbs up!

Prince sound engineer reflects on recording some of his biggest hits

Arts & Culture Apr 22, 2016

Susan Rogers worked as a sound engineer for Prince from 1985-89 when she recorded classic albums like "Purple Rain" and "Sign of the Times." She is now an associate professor in the Music Production and Engineering Department at Berklee College of Music in Boston.

MPR's Cathy Wurzer spoke with her.

Susan Rogers: I don't know, but I would hope that someone who - his attorney, maybe, who was in charge of his affairs - will go through and assign that material to other musicians; musicians he worked with, to finish up and release. I would hope that the material from the 80s would get put in the hands of Wendy Melvoin and Lisa Coleman and Bobby Z., the musicians who were part of the original Revolution so we could finish that stuff up the way he liked it, and put it out there.

Prince gave clear suggestions about the way vault releases could be managed in his recently released 2014 Rolling Stone interview.

If he wanted anything destroyed he wouldn't have chosen to keep it in the vault in the first place.

On his unreleased music:

I've never said this before, but I didn't always give the record companies the best song. There are songs in the vault that no one's ever heard. There are several vaults; it's not just one vault.

Are there full unreleased albums?

Yeah, I like time capsule stuff. I have a couple Revolution albums in the vault and two Time albums, one Vanity 6 album … and tons of stuff recorded in different periods. But so much gets recorded that you don't have time to compile everything. In the future you could put all the best stuff from one particular time period together and then you can release it. It'd just be like if we found a Sly and the Family Stone album and they saved their best stuff. If that's even possible!

they need to take their time with this...it's just way too soon to be discussing/planning it. Personally I think it's all very obvious..hang on until next year, get the relevant people from each era to come together & work on/assemble tracks i.e. upto say 87 Wendy, Lisa, Eric, MD etc. It could actually be a very joyful & healing experience.

In terms of releases they could just drip feed it i.e. 1 or 2 albums a year OR go nuclear & set up a website that gets added to on a constant basis...live albums/videos, the dreaded remasters [!], out takes/unreleased etc.

Right now there's a million options..but it cam all wait. Personally I already have all the music I need.

I fear that there will be a gigantic legal fight to define the rights to publish the materials. If those rights are defined, there may still be a dispute between the label(s) and the estate over Prince's intent and conditions for publication of the materials.

The market may have to wait years to see the first Vault releases. Maybe even the remasters that were set into motion in 2014.

All this.
I agree with the bolded too - I might want more but if another note doesn't get released, I'm good. Not gonna get my panties in a bunch over the inevitable drama.

Doesn't seem like it will be fast or easy to release the vault material. Seems like the project would need to negotiate with the individual contributors/collaborators. Perhaps that's why Revolution or Time tracks haven't seen light of day. All it would take is one person in an entire group refusing to accept an offer to make the project a questionable effort.

You've got to go through all that stuff and organize it too and that is, in itself, a huge project that will take some time.

I agree. Release them as a series. Starting with the remasters of the albums. All of them. And then unreleased albums as part of a Vault Series. Albums, collections, live albums and what I am really hoping for is video releases Blu Ray or whatever of classic concerts from every tour. He has the original high quality video recordings of so many concerts as well. Not sure how many were just a single camera for him to watch back and how many were multi camera professionally filmed.

The Peach and Black guys also heard he has unreleased extended versions of classic released tracks too, like 20 min version of Adore. It would be amazing if every album had all the remixes, b-sides and extended versions and tracks from the same sessions that were left off the albums. We could be talking 2 or 3 CD sets of every album, remastered.

Who knows whats in the Vault. But whoever is in charge of what's released I hope will consult with band members, those close to him, people like Susan Rodgers and even some fans, who know what will result in the best representation of the Vault Material for all invovled.

I would also be concerned if they bring in a producer who might mess with the tracks. No doubt they will need to be worked on but I wouldn't want to see someone change their intended sound.

We just have to hope the Vault is respected as Prince would have wanted. It shouldn't be rushed, it should be handled with grace and dignity. But yes we all want to know what's in there.

Prince considered Jam & Lewis for Vault tracks..

TTD'arby should be allowed to sit-it, or advise on the material he was on

Same with Kravitz.... (Lenny has a pic on his IG of a cassette of thier jams)

Same with Najee

Same with anyone on the tracks.

P said in this interview that he would probably release some of that stuff himself before he died. It sounded like he was saying when he didn't have that much new to say, musically, he would let some of thsoe old tracks out..

He has said contradictory things, so as far as his wishes, let alone his instructions go - we really have no idea.

Is it me, or would Susan Rogers be the consensus pick to produce and manage the Vault material. Any other suggestions? I feel it needs to be guided by one hand or it would quickly become a money grap / cluster fuck.

I disagree. Fans probably only know a small fraction of what's availble. A team of curators, perhaps, but committees like that can descend into bickering and indecision.

I would imagine the estate will pick the best people for the job, not necessarily someome they might not even realize Prince mentioned in some of his bazillion interviews. But time will tell.

I don't think the intention with the fan input idea was for that input to be based solely on what we know is circulating. I was thinking it was more intended to use them as part of the decision process, to get an idea of what the fan base might like to see released.

E.g.

Vault Team : "Hey look, we've found 18 versions of Purple & Gold, let's ask the fan delegation if they think that would make a good release."
