I don't really listen to the lyrics on this album - so am unaffected by the religious dogma.

-

It is a funky album

Guess I'm like those Americans who proudly sing "Born in the USA" as an anthem...without knowing what the Boss was actually going on about!

It is not my cup of tea. I really do not like the album. You can take that album, baltimore and the damn Vikings song and just toss them out of his catalog as far as Im concerned. I would rather listen to Jughead.

Musically, it's one of his best. So lush. Great mix of songwriting and jamming. But lyrically I can't bring myself to listen to it too often anymore.

I feel the same way. Musically, I love it. The guitar work is amazing too, but the lyrics are terrible.

"Pleased to meet you Mrs Pearlman, glad to know your family name" and the same for Mr Goldstuck stereotypical Jewish Yiddish names based around precious materials, but of the hated Judentoleratt of 1781 where Maria Theresa forced Jews to take Germanic names as Hebrew ones were banned in Austro Hungarian, rich Jews paid for nice names like Goldstein, Silverman, Pearl etc, poor ones got names like Adler (Eagle), Schwarz (Black), Vogel (Bird) Berlinski, Bialystok after places and animals. The best and most expensive name was Edelstein (Eidelweiss stone).

.

The way he sings the lines are snarly and condescending and anti Jewish, also he raves on about the black victim mentality and that Jews were to blame for them. Prince is half Jehovah and half Rahim Malik Shabazz Muslim activist there.

.

"There is a theocratic void, all the boys and girls". I don't have to state the exact lyrics but espouses homophobia, just like you do for challenging me. You would not do that to a black person if they said a song was anti black racist and then ask them to announce which lines it was.

If I did, there would be out roar and Black women bobbing their heads going "Oh hell naw!" and "Uh huh" and fire his racist white ass.

.

Anyway I still hate the album - Muse to the Pharaoh mentions that, but that women should stay home and be muses to their men. A women is a muse (Or sexy inspirational decoration) while the mighty man is a Pharaoh - its enough that most Black music is hyper masculine and degrades women to the status of servile sex objects, that an educated and more sophisticated artists like Prince degrades them too.

Yeah but its okay for you guys to shit on Jews and gays along with women in the name of art?

.

That is the most ignorant fucked up shit I have ever heard. To get respect you need to earn it. To get compassion and sympathy you need to earn it! If I had a nickel for every time a song by a black artist referred to a woman as a ho or a bitch and a Jew as a parasite and white people as evil devils, I would be richer than Donald Trump.

.

I am not racist and really resent being called one. I do not hate groups of people, I merely inform them that everyone is equal and everyone is a victim of some in just system or person before. The fact that dogmatic bullshit religions are responsible for all the war and hate in this world today is not helped by albums of crap done by artists who are generally respected as the very finest by people from all backgrounds is shocking. The fact the album praises the Jehovah's Witness bullshit to the high heavens is anathema in itself.

.

However because it is Prince, it is a slight misstep in a near perfect career and I can look past it, but I swear the nest hard done by victim card playing fool calls my arse a racist, I am going to scream and rip shit up and say what I really feel about certain groups of people.

.

I did not choose to be born a mixed race person of White and Polynesian heritage and I ask your apology for not be born a black person whose life has been one of permanent bondage caused by the insufferable arm of racism. Yes you are Black and get angry whenever I say something that does not support your very narrow point of view, well deal with it. I am not, I live in a world where the whites have bent over backwards to make life good for me and where I have taken every opportunity to move ahead, whereas my brown side has been one of constant homophobia, religious bigotry and neglect. That's life, being favoured and respected by whites and shit on by Brown people means naturally I have a PRO white bias. Its not racist, its just me.

.

Maybe the Whites respect me more here, because I am not calling them racists every 5 minutes when they disagree with me over something stupid like a bad album by a musical artist. I assume you are Black, but I could be wrong, but hey thats life and if you are white or something else no doubt I can be forgiven.

.

From now on I am going to try and not reply to dumb ass trolls who take exception to everything I say because some person may be offended. I mean I am merely stating I don't like this album and yet I am being shot down by you hive mind iilluminati motherfuckers.

I don't get the idea that the album over praises JW's. It takes a religious and historical concept yes and explores it, but that is what art is supposed to do. Just as he has done a multitude of songs exploring love and sex. I am not religious but I thought it was an interesting theme, different from his usual output. Just as in freedom of speech there is freedom of expresssion. I think that's a good thing.

Thanks for the info on the origins of those Jewish names. I never knew that.

I never challenge you with homophobic words.
I did not know you were hay until this thread

I would ask the same of a black person

* note: Prince is using very cryptic words lines lyrics, and nothing is jumping out in what I've heard as 'homophobic' not to mention I don't hear the lyrics as much as I hear the music 1st then how lyrics are actually sung. So it could all go over my head. And nothing wrong with asking, can you point out a line or a song to reference. Like I did not know about the origins of those Jewish names.

Mostly awful. I've tried several times, but with the exception of a few songs, it is almost unlistenable to me. When he performed them live, he breathed life into them brilliantly, but the album versions and the segues just aren't something I enjoy.

"The opposite of NATO is OTAN"

Musically and lyrically a great album.

If I could remake a prince track it would be "Muse to the Pharaoh" or "Space".

Muse would be the first choice.
