1978 version of Sometimes it Snows in April

Dez is auctioning off a tape of old Prince demos. One of the songs featured is Sometimes it Snows in April. The demo is from 1978! Does anyone have more info on this?

On side B, Prince had his work versions of 6 songs, which I left intact for, at that time, unknown reasons (obviously, we now know it preserved a piece of musical history)." The Side B, containing Prince's songs, opens with an early, acoustic version of "So Blue", followed by two unreleased love songs with bouncy, upbeat choruses and risque lyrics. Next is an early version of "Gotta Broken Heart Again", which later appeared on Prince's seminal "Dirty Mind" album. The fourth track features heavy guitar distortion and a chorus that include very candid sexual pleas from Prince. The tape ends with a very early, virtually unrecognizable version of "Sometimes it Snows in April", with only a couple of lines from the chorus making the final cut onto the later version of the song that's featured on the "Parade" album, released some eight years after this tape was created. The audio quality on the tape is very good, with Prince's voice very clear and the overall sound still quite sharp. Tape is offered as collector's piece only and does not come with rights for reproduction, manufacturing or distribution. Cassette is housed in its plastic cover with "Prince Worktape '78" handwritten on it by Dez. From the collection of Dez Dickerson.

So Sometimes it Snows in April was acutally always a Prince song and W&L added something to the Parade version. Me thinks people give too much credit to other people in his bands without prove.

virtually unrecognizable version of "Sometimes it Snows in April",

which means it probably sounds nothing like the Parade release

if this is even what it is...

Lisa Coleman: “Sometimes It Snows In April” was really the pinnacle of our relationship together [with Prince]. The three of us had kind of a love affair. And when we wrote that song– again– it was just the three of us sitting together in a room. I really loved it, and I had hoped we would follow that trail further, you know? Like make a whole record like that or something. But, that didn’t happen.

No.

"virtually unrecognizable version of "Sometimes it Snows in April", with only a couple of lines from the chorus making the final cut onto the later version"

W&L and Prince wrote the version on Parade together. Given the above info it sounds like Prince's contribution may have included lyrics he had previously written...

Given how on the current tour, Prince has been pointing out 'Lisa wrote this part...', I doubt even he would agree with such a fatuous statement.

Only on ONE song Raspberry Beret'. She wrote only a tiny musical chorus. Doesn't equal decades of musical compositions he wrote alone. Wendy even admits that.

There's no way that tape would sell for $20,000. It's completely unrealistic. Maybe $5,000 to $7,500 tops. I also doubt that you could call the track "Sometimes it Snows in April"#1 either. He might say that phrase possibly but its not the same song idea at all. As for the other auction items, the prices that are being ask are really for more recognizable or iconic type pieces. The Rave outfit would kind of be one but at that price you would really need the jacket. I have a few stage worn costome pieces that I bought in the early 2000's and the prices were reasonable. I doubt any of that will move unless someone really wants an emancipation/jam of the year era scarf or a wedding plate.

It means he had ideas as early as '78 that ended up in the song seven or eight years later. Who knows what he added between '78 and '85?

Dude, lol

Were you expecting him to do a run down of every song, that she worked with him on? And every detail?
Even Morris and Lisa say they both did a lot of work with Prince that became the protege music or some of his music.

What Prince said about Raspberry Beret, he was just giving a tidbit, she was obviously with him in the creation of the song, he did not go from beginning to ending of how the song was fully done, nor who all did what.

Prince from the time he had Lisa in the band had her work a lot with him.

Lisa was never an explosive keyboard player, but she was a master of color in her harmonies; I could sing off of what she had with straight soul.

I remember when Miles Davis came to my house. As he was passing by my piano, he stopped and put his hands down on the keys and played these eight chords, one after the other. It was so beautiful; he sounded like Bill Evans or Lisa [Coleman], who also had this way of playing chords that were so perfect.
