My new album rankings for 2016

An update from my 2013 ranking system. I ran each song on an album out of 10 and then total up points, dividing them out of number of tracks (Such as 72 points for Dirty Mind out of a maximum of 80 points (10 per song) which gives a raw score of 90%.

.

Here is the data and my comments, please see notes below.

.

Album name % Grade Comment
Sign o the Times Disc 2 100 A+++ Absolutely perfect, seven very different songs, all are the holy grail of classics, the best album side ever made
Sign o the Times Disc 1 97 A++ Very high and consistent quality, what is not a 10/10 is a 9, great songs, but even outshadowed by the other disk.
Purple Rain 96 A++ Even better than above seamless rock and pop, his biggest hit and best songs, Purple Rain is magic, wow the purple reigned
Parade 94 A+ Another classic album, the creamy kiss, catchy mountains, the rest is smooth and lovely piano ballads. Wow more classic Prince here.
Lovesexy 92 A+ Very good album, some very strong cuts and a few lesser ones, but the vibe on the album really makes it, solid but not Sign quality tho
1999, 91 A+ Uniformly excellent album, no filler and a lot of killer, great use of drum machines and very polished sound
Dirty Mind 90 A+ This album is just brilliant, the catchy punk funk, the outrageous lyrics and his falsetto just make it. A real trend setter
The Gold Experience 89 A/A+ This album is outstanding, great rock tracks, perfect ballads, creamy sex joints and some great playing, this deserved to be huge!!!
HitnRun Phase 2 89 A Fantastic album , lots of funk, bass, horns and great soulful songs, his best and blackest sounding album in years, a classic!
Around the World in a day 86 A Very good, but not as good as PR and Parade, some excellent stuff,. Condition of the heart is great too
The Bsides 86 A Great collection of Bsides from 1981 to 1989, most of them are very good, a couple are amongst his best ever and a few bad. Very satisfying
Controversy 83 A- The first three songs are as great as SOTT, the rest is okay and a bit indulgent, but this is a VERY GOOD album, Do Me Baby - wow
Crystal Ball Disc 1 81 A- Several highlights with a few ordinary songs, but no filler unlike emancipation, overall a good album
3121 Album 81 A- A very funky and very good album, all the songs range between Good and Excellent, but no outstanding ones though, still its consistent
Art Official Age 81 A- A great later album, some funky music here and great songwriting. Affirmations not rated as not really a song
Crystal Ball Disc 2 80 A- Several highlights with a few ordinary songs, but no filler unlike emancipation, overall a good album
20Ten 79 B+ Soft songs overall, some great soul numbers and slow jams, smooth sounding funk
Crystal Ball Disc 3 78 B+ Several highlights with a few ordinary songs, but no filler unlike emancipation, overall a good album
Black Album 76 B+ Good mix of songs from Camille,Spooky Electric and Prince. Le Grind and Rock hard are the standouts with When 2 R In love
Come 75 B+ Again an up and down album, two stand out tracks, the bulk of it good enough but one real stinker, overall, this album deserves more love
Lotusflow3r 75 B+ Not bad but typical polite play it safe music, couple of good songs
Love Symbol 73 B Better than above, but again this album is ruined by bad rapping and silly segues and a couple of fillers, still overall a great album
Emancipation Disc 1 73 B Some good jams here, less filler than the other disks
Prince 72 B A better more well constructed, 3 very good upbeat songs and 3 forgettable ballads, still miles ahead of his debut, way behind DM though
Diamonds and Pearls 71 B Despite it being a hit, this album is pretty poor, some killer tracks and a lot of average filler, and some bad rapping by Tony M
The Vault, old friends 4 sale 71 B Good mixture of mid 90s outakes, some great tracks and some okay tracks, no filler or rubbish though, an interesting side to Prince
Chaos and Disorder 70 B Much better quality rock album, onlyHad U is throwaway the rest is rock guitar, bass and drums, Stripped down Prince.
Planet Earth 70 B Very average to very good songs, nothing new but nice enough
The Hits/B sides 4 new tracks 68 B- Nothing Compares 2 U is great, others are ordinary and Pope is a terrible rap
MPLsOUND 68 B- Average attempt at recapturing 80s, some good funk songs, lot of larded out ballads, great once, but dated badly
Musicology 67 B- Good return to form, good jazzy feel and a mature sounding album, yet its funky too.
Plectrum Electrum 67 B- Average album with some great songs and a few stinkers like Boytrouble, very mixed quality
Graffiti Bridge 66 B- Again some brilliant songs, some great ones and a lot of kind of okay ones, Time ones fair, Prince songs are the best here, very uneven
Rave un2 the Joy Fantastic 64 C+ Generally a good album, lot of Satisfactory and fairly good songs, not really great or memorable though, a few great tracks too
Emancipation Disc 2 63 C+ Highlights and lowlights here, Holy River is classic, The Plan is fluff
For You 62 C+ Satisfactory debut effort, more technical than emotional, its unremarkable and forgettable, but still an okay album, a start.
Emancipation Disc 3 61 C+ Lots of badly conceived filler here, but 2 excellent songs, still there are 6 filler tracks here
HitnRun Phase 1 61 C+ Weak album with a lot of slip shod rap filler
Batman 60 C+ Uneven quality, some good songs, but a lot of electronic filler, not inspired like his other 80s works
The Truth 48 D+ Few okay songs and a lot of filler rubbish, part of the mid 90s acoustic craze, definitely a lesser album
New Power Soul 47 D+ Dreadful, the songs are funky and dancey but are just artistic fluff, they are just sex and dancing, 3 really decent songs at least
The Rainbow Children 42 D Crap, good music sound, little else, racist, sexist, anti semitic and homophobic crap
N.E.W.S 38 E+ Bad jazz crap, boring as heck

Notes.

.

1. I have not ranked NPG Operators, Segues or Affirmations, as these would bring marks down greatly and how do you rank spoken word sequences.

2. Have not ranked live albums like One Nite Alone, Indigo nights, NPGMC releases or Greatest Hits collections.

3. Same with bootlegs and protege albums.

4. Raw scores for multidisc albums - Sign o the Times - 98.4 A+++

Crystal Ball - 79.6 A-/B+

Emancipation - 65.5 B-

5. Hits albums I did rate

Ultimate - Disc 2 - 76 B+

.

I update this list at least yearly, so initial reactions to new music are tempered and my taste changes on many albums over time.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

I appreciate your effort, but some of your rankings are terrible. The Truth a D? Rainbow Children a D? To name just a couple. Each to there own I guess.

You're adressing the compact disc format; Not the album as a whole?

SOTT was 4 sides of vinyl, 2 cds full & one casette. Why not rank SOTT as a whole?? :)

Good on you for recognizing the quality of "Hitnrun Phase 2" -definitely a great album. This should have been "Phase One"- things would have better for ol' Prince now.

Respectfully disagree with "Rainbow Children" ranking. "Last December", "Everlasting Now", "Mellow", "1+1+1=3","Family Name", "The Work" & the album cover- are homeruns.

So ... Did u relisten to each and every disk in the new year for fresh perspective?

So nice to see rainbow at the bottom where it belongs ... Should be joined by gold, 3121, hnr 1+2 tho imo biggrin

Good responses guys. Questions

1. Yes I use the CD format - but at the bottom if you look, I have raw scores for a whole album, and SOTT is still way out ahead. Crystal Ball is even too, but Emancipation varies a bit, the first disc is the best by 10 or more percent.

2. Yes I listen to every album at least 3 times each year.

3. My opinion is my opinion, Rianbow children and Truth are morose crap, can barely listen to them. I love Gold and Hitnrun Phase 2 thats me.

.

Gave me a shock though, noticed that Purple Rain is my number 2 album after all, then again listening to it, it is great.

.

Only thing I disagree with is being called a noob (I assume hipster slang for Newbie or new fan, I can assure you my friend I am not a newbie, I have 25 years experience of intense Princeocology and have featured in Famjams and have my own channel on Youtube, along with respect in many of the community in Australia, NZ and now even a superfan in the UK.

.

Criticise my work, but don't call me names andykeen, I see you have a joker as your avatar, yeah stick to that jokey joke jokemaker.

I'd give both those albums a 9. How do you rate an album A+++ like using what methodology? :/

I use British New Zealand grading system which is not the American 10 points per grade one.

Grades used. We used this system at university and had a GPA from 1 to 9. Also here grades A to C are passes, a D or an E is a failure.

.

A+ 90 or more, although I have used A++ for 95 or more and A+++ for 98 or more - High First Class (Distinction) pass GPA 9.0

A, -85 to 89, Clear first class, GPA 8.0

A-, 80 -84, Bare first class, GPA 7.0

.

B+, 75 - 79, High second class (Credit/Merit) pass, GPA 6.0

B, 70 - 74, Clear second class, GPA 5.0

B-, 65 -69, Bare second class, GPA 4.0 - (Usual minimum needed to do graduate courses in your Undergraduate BA degree)

.

C+, 60 -64, Sound pass (No third class), GPA 3.0

C, 55 -59, Pass, GPA 2.0

C-, 50 - 54, Marginal Pass, GPA 1.0 (Some higher end courses did not accept C- and called them conceded passes, too many disqualified you from graduation, happened to me with two C- grades in my first 2 years)

.

D+, 47 - 49, Marginal Fail No GPA, In cases of compassion, like one marginal grade like this in a minor it would be a conceded pass.

D, 44 - 46, Clear Fail

D-, 40 - 43, Poor Fail

.

E+, 35 -39, Poor Fail

E, 30 - 34, Poor Fail

F, Under 30, Why did you bother showing up to the test/course.

W, Withdrawn no grade

DS, Disqualified no grade

DNS, Did not sit.

.

So in my case, you got grades and a GPA from year to year, for my BA it was 5.039 meaning an average of B (Mostly I got B+ to B- and the occasional A- and C)

For my Masters degree, it increased to 6.35, which was a good B+ (I got B+ for my diseertation and all papers except one I got an A- for), but I missed out on First class getting a 2nd class(B) Division I (73 - 79%). The other levels for MA are First Class (Anything over 80%/A-), 2nd class 2nd division (65 - 72%) and 3rd class (C grade 50 - 64%)rare as few postgrads get a post grad degree level with a C average, but for minorities and culturally disadvantaged groups (Women, Brown people, extreme poverty, inmates, 2nd chance hope programmes), it has become more common.

I never knew there was a standardised structure for rating albums and a range of scores you have to rank each album. I operate on a system called personal opinion, common in free and democratic countries like my one, but must be anathema in the communist hellhole you live or is that your imagination.

.

You like the Truth and TRC, good for you I don't. Not only is the content shit, but the songwriting and musicality of both albums is way below his usual standard. I don't make the rules, I just reinforce them. You don't have to respect the opinions I set out, but you don't have to personally attack me over them, its called trolling and its not permitted on the org.

The note about Crystal Ball not having any filler is at least inadvertently funny. Putting more music on that collection didn't necessarily require employing filler, as Prince has so many worthy tracks available that were nowhere to be seen on the set, but it would have been nice if the discs were at least...full.

Also a humorous note because...what are the eight remixes and previously released songs on a 30-song collection that was supposed to be all about bootlegged material if not 100% pure filler?

Not to say someone shouldn't rank 'em however s/he wants, mind you. Buy 50 assorted donuts and lay the very best CDs atop the ones with chocolate frosting, and put the ones that are crap on those yucky maple donuts. Slide them in order onto a broom handle and pretend it's your Prince lightsaber with a devastating Sign 'o' the Times tip. Purify Girl 6 in the waters of Lake Minnetonka. Have the fun you want to have with your Prince collection.

But...yeah. Crystal Ball. I might suggest calling it free of filler is not an objectively supportable statement, even in a personal list.

I'm sorry but you can't say "the content is shit" when talking about any of his albims - especially TRC. You may not like it and have your opinion but don't speak of your opinion like it is a fact. I dont like HitnRun Phase 1 but I would never call it shit - like I could do any better!!! That's just downright disrespectful and you damage your credibility full stop.

You guys are a pack of haters. If you hate my rankings so much, post your own instead of trading potshots. Don't bring me down 2 days before his double concert here!

.

PS: I am not Black or a Christian, or straight, so hence why I have issues with his preachy homophobic nonsense. Just because you all like Love Jones in de bible, dosen'tmean I do, also a lot of the music I don't like of his is aimed at 2 digit IQ fans, I have a 3 digit IQ. Jazz music is overated and dated, to me Jazz is like Jazzabo Collins and Fate Marabelle in 1921 with a steamboat or a car that looks like the one Grandma Duck drives.

Good point, I need to redo some comments, as I update the list yearly and at one stage Musicology was a 75, and now its dropped. I guess it has got more boring over the years.

.

I guess too, compared to TRC, NEWS and the One Nite Alone albums, the album does sound like a return to form, of course in between AOA and Hitnrun Phase 2 it would sound like a drop down.

I focussed on lifting For You, upa bit this time as 59 did seem low, but in reality, the best songs on that album are 8's (Soft and Wet and Baby) with also a couple of 7s, but the ballads are 4 out of 10 territory. Compared to later albums and even Prince this album is still lacking and lifting it up to 62, was about as much as I could do sorry.

.

In fact we don't hit a 10/10 song until Dirty Mind, although 3 songs off Prince got 9, Lover, I feel for you and Sexy Dancer.

Batman is ranked totally wrong in my humble opinion. It's a 10/10 album for me along with The Rainbow Children which easily makes my top 10 and I'm a very peaceful athiest. There's a reason people are paying up to $500 for TRC on vinyl - it's an epic album. One more thing, Hit n run 2 phase 2 above Controversy WTF smile
