But, why so much deal with the lyrics, aren't all of you native English speakers?

I am. But what don't you get about that? I find it hard to believe you understand every word everyone speaks and/or sings in your language. Like you've never asked "Huh?". Really?

Yes' i understan averything in my language.

¡Cabron! Es una broma, no? Una vez en Peru estuve hablando de un playera y la gente no me entendieron por que en Peru se lo llame un polo. Siempre hay pequenas differencias. Pero me gusta sus contribuciones por que puede practicar mi Espanol un poco!

That IS what he says! Also makes more sense in the context of the song. Since the person in the song I assumed was a male.

Ah, I'm not alone then! But the syphilis part was of course never in there, that was a bit of a joke.

Alright, you hilarious fuckers! lol

I've listened some more, and I can hear "senseless" just as much as I can hear "syphilis"... I guess it all just depends on what you're expecting to hear. Given that I've been hearing "syphilis" for over thirty years, I'd like to propose that it's a better lyric than "senseless", even if it might not be what Prince wrote:

  1. The father gives his prognosis: Pneumonia
  2. The mother gives hers: Stress
  3. Prince gives his: Syphilis

When things come in threes like this, the third one is usually correct. And it's especially heartbreaking because the mother and father didn't actually know what killed their daughter - only Prince did, because she was closer to him than to them... which makes their separation all the more tragic.

So bash away, Orgers! But even if it's what he wrote, "senseless" is just... senseless. razz

Sorry, but I'm not convinced because you're leaving out an important part: "the doctor said you were dead and now I say it's senseless" Meaning: who cares what the cause of death is. She's gone and that's all that matters.

yeahthat He doesn't care about the cause of death, because it's all the same in the end. It's "senseless".

Hey loudmouth, shut the fuck up, right?

No sorry. I think it's one of the few truly awful Prince songs of the eighties.
The emotions are completely phoney to me.

It all makes sense now. If she died of syphilis then it suggests he has it too. No wonder he spent the last 7 xmases alone... No one would touch him with a barge pole.

I guess you had to be there (the 80s) to appreciate it.

This song is/was an absolute gem.

But i can appreciate the fact that you might think that its tacky.

A lot of his older songs, although great at the time, now might sound silly to the younger crowd. But FMD, to us/those who heard these when they were first released, song like these are priceless.

Hate the edit version of this though. It KILLS the mood of the entire song. mad

I can only find the live version: much better singing and not such a cluttered sound, with all that reverb/echo. And a nice restrained guitar solo at the end.

Yes, now that you say it, you are probably right; it's a little too much for me.
