^ no no no... question wink

we are discussing if "For You" > "Rave Un2.." never existed.

Would you still be a Prince fan if his career started with Rave In2 + TRC + NEWS + Musicology etc...

And without his hit era... without: "Controversy" + "1999" + "Purple Rain" etc. etc...albums...

No, his carreer started with For You. Not with Rave or the Rainbow Children. So the question is clearly: would you be a fan if For You was released in 2000.

If that's "clearly" the question, then it's not only stupid, it's also uninteresting. Why would somebody release "For You" in 2000? Critics everywhere "It's interesting, but it sounds 20 years dated. 1/2 star"

The point of the question was to assess his music of the last 15 years in terms of relavancy within the context of other current artists, and attempting to do so without "knowing what you know" about his past.

You're kind of in a Twilight Zone situation. When everybody else thinks A but you think B. Is everybody else wrong? Maybe. Seems unlikely though.

Yet my comment was "pretty simple" - I said that I'm a breathing musician and my answer is
"no." You actually make our interactions more strained than necessary, but whatever!

Yet your comment says a great deal.

yes and no

Considering that it was his music from 2000 onwards that turned me on to Prince, my answer is YES.
I had never been interested in Prince. My mum had a Sheila E album on vinyl and my sister had Purple Rain on CD but I never listened to either.
My boyfriend (now ex) is a huge Prince fan. When we broke up he left behind 3121 and I listened to it as a sad way of missing him. But I really liked it. I didn't expect to. But after that I got Musicology and I liked that too. So my ex gave me his entire Prince collection on USB. I'm still working my way through it but I've listened to all the studio albums and yes, I do prefer the 80's stuff, but his music post 2000 is what made me a fan in the first place.

Now, if the question was, would I be a fan if his career started in 2010, my answer would probably be different.

So Prince would be like 18 starting his career in 2000?? Then my answer would be no because any new "artist" from 2000 until now are just horrible on ALL levels. Just the worse time in music now.

^ Hey Bonatoc, why do you always come off as very "negative"...?

I still have to read a positive comment from you here on the Org..... eek

Peace..... different opinions are ok, just saying... and wondering why.... wink

Oh, I think there are quite many, actually... I made some dithyrambic comments about AOA, and of course you can read me praise anything about the eighties, and the TGE era as well.

"Welcome 2 The Org.
There are over 10 millions posts to choose from.
Here's a sample (#66) : http://prince.org/msg/7/4...?&pg=3

When I take a piss, it's mostly humoristic, but it's kinda tongue in cheek.
I mean you would get that I'm joking if we were face to face or in the same room.

I think it's clear that I have some knowledge about Prince (some orgers regularly make my jaw drop),
and me calling him "Skipper" shows how much affection I have for the man.

Let's make it clear : he's my Hero.

But I sure like to point out when his extravaganza does not result in something achieved or that carries the elegance, or the energy, or the rawness of his best works.

Yeah, I guess I like to kick him in the nuts. Of course The Org is all chatting, and surely Skipper does not change his way of working or living because of what's been said here.
I do it when I think he deserves more out of a given situation.
Working with Josh is not a bad idea, but there are surely some repetitions in what he puts out lately, and such repetitions don't bring me much Joy.

I think it's important for a forum to have naysayers as a reminder that being Prince does not excuse the faux-pas, and Skipper collects (almost) them all. That's not saying his achievements aren't greater, and they surely make for all the wrong turns.
That's the price to pay for Skipper's freedom, I guess.
Sometimes I feel he doesn't give us back the love we have for him. The Purple Rain anniversary fiasco alone is something I feel being plain wrong, in terms of respect for us, and people simply digging the man. Sales and "Money Don't Matter", "It's all about being there".

Being a Prince fan on The Org is way better that collecting stamps or anything else. There's so much to talk about, and when I do cringe, I do it with passion. I have latin blood.
I can understand that if you don't know me, it can look like I'm just bashing for the sake of it.

Peace, (& B wild) cool
