LOL. You get what you deserve following trends. IMHO The Teddy Riley production is and was atrocious, the beginning of the end. Prince was making money and having fun back then. Alot of that shit from like 91-97 is so hilarious to listen to now, like bad commercials. The real gems will never lose their shine.

If you don't think his 80's stuff sounds dated, play it for someone born in the 90's. I have and they said it's sounds 80's. As far as MJ goes, anything after Thirller was silly and sounds super dated. [snip - M]

I was born in the 90's and I don't think Prince's 80's material sounds dated at all.

I should have mentioned non-fans in my post. But just think of When Doves Cry, fantastic song but it screams 80s. I Would Die For You?

V10LETBLUES

When Doves Cry is such an iconic track. Nothing before or after sounds like it. It screams 80's because it's associated with Prince. That track wasn't copying anyone or chasing any trend I can think of. Even the record label didn't know what to do with it.
When it is clearly derivative of a fad without adding anything new, that's when anything is bad.

The Prince stuff that sounds really dated to me is when he tried to appeal to the hip hop audience, pretty much any tracks with Tony M for example. And some of the more hip hop/rap tracks on Gold Experience, with a glorious exception for P Control.

But as far as Diamonds and Pearls and his other pop stuff I don't see how it sounds any more dated than anything MJ was doing around that time. And songs like Jam sound just as dated to me as Prince's hip hop stuff.

I suppose some songs have become synonymous with the 80's but at the same time, if When Doves Cry or Computer Blue came out now, they would be the freshest songs on the radio.
