I made my mom watch Under the Cherry Moon for the first time last night...

...and I'm not surprised that she never heard of the film before last night. lol and I wasn't surprised that she thought Prince was gay before she saw the film; she actually enjoyed it and she didn't know it was Kristin Scott Thomas' first film (she loves The English Patient). She loves the song Kiss and didn't know it was from this film. Lastly, she didn't know Prince could act and actually laughed at his antics in the film. lol

This reminds me of when I showed my Mum Purple Rain and she was a bit shocked at the part during one of the performances (I think it's Computer Blue) where Wendy gets down on her knees in front of P all suggestively.

I was like "Mate, just wait til the fucking sex scene" in my head. In fact I think I left to go make a cup of tea when that came on. Right on cue.

But if you ever show her Graffiti Bridge, that would be cruelty and abuse.

I haven't watched it in years myself; love the album though.

Haven't shown that movie to her as she's not fond of rock music; she loved the setting of France in Under the Cherry Moon and she didn't mind that the film was in black and white. lol

UTCM is actually a good film. people expected a PR part 2 that's why most of them didn't like it. i enjoy it every time i watch it. it's funny to me.

Exactly. How do you think the FBI has been interrogating people since 1990? If the criminal doesn't break the first time around, the agents press "play" and leave the room.

I was thinking the other day how Prince was also, to some extent, perceived as an actor and director at some short point in his career and how this suddenly vanished into thin air and he was only a musician and today the notion of Prince acting in a movie or directing one has become totally foreign to us, just a temporary anomaly in his career, that made him a superstar for sure, but an anomaly nevertheless.

I had a dream about him as Charlie Chaplin. I posted it here somewhere. But yeah, he definately is the likes of Old Hollywood, I certainly see that in him.

I always wondered why he wanted to play a death scene so bad, lol

I'm glad she quite liked it, it's a fun little movie that suffered due to the weight of expectations imo (there are definitely faults and P will never be a great actor, but enjoyable none the less.) I wonder if there'll be any critical reappraisals next year for the 35th anniversary. Probably not but it would be nice to see non-fans discussing it without it being a huge joke.

I've caught my dad 81 y.o. bless his heart, watching UTCM a couple of times. He always comes in the room where I am to tell me it's on t.v.
Mom, God rest her soul took me to the theater to see Purple rain for the first of my 25? viewings. She loved it and UTCM as well. She also came with me to the Purple Rain tour in the Superdome.
Prince did an interview with a woman at Record World. They talked about whatever, then he asked her: "Does your pubic hair go up to your navel?" At that moment, we thought maybe we shouldn't encourage him to do interviews.

Its not a great movie, and he is not a great actor imo. But its beautifully shot, and it definitely has its moments. The music obviously is the best and the Girls and Boys scene is f'n awesome.

"New dance....new dance..." This looks like "The Shake-N-Bake" he was referring to in The Line. A precursor "The Horny Pony," perhaps?

Bloody awful film that opts for style over substance. It lacks any real tension in the movie, making it feel like an Adam Sandler film, but with French stuff and shit.

Shame. Parade was one of his best albums.

Yeah, of course Christopher is loveable.

It's Skipper giving his piano-bar daddy a riviera revenge.

The few attempts at investigating the love wars are not so bad, they make the first third. I would say it's an excellent film until you reach Alexa de Paris.

The teasing between Christopher and Mary is great, but after that, it gets boring — gags aside, because they're quite good : Wrecka Stow, "Fex" on the phone, the Mary's Mom incident...

But it loses his drama potential. Mary's character could have been much more complex. It worries me about Prince's vision of women. Skipper's girls always seem so unidimensional to me.
