Still hot....especially after the "Stop The Press" part....dayum, that is funky!

Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

You're right! To me, it's the sound of a song being played sideways. Love it!

This song & the album is funky as hell! People say Prince lost his touch after SOTT but no he didn't, he just need big budget videos for the MTV generation to get his shit, that's all

I love Batdance, I never understood why so many people criticize it. My kids don't like Prince (they have to be different than dad), but they universally love Batdance.

I love Batdance, who else but Prince could have made such an outstanding theme song for "Batman"??

I love it all - the dialogue from the film and the rhythms, the guitar solo.. excellent.. !

And I agree with what is said above, the Batdance-video is one Prince's best music videos.

Batdance = I love to listen to this - still after all those years.... woot! heart

I'd love it much more as a piece of music w/out the samples from the film. (and that goes for all the album's songs). It's a gimmick that hopeflessly dates it and ties it into the film inexorably, to the point where the songs don't stand up well on their own (in some casese).

I think the songs could have worked better w/out the film samples. Apart, I suppose, from "Batdance" which really should've been a 12" mix of "200 Balloons."

Brilliant then, brilliant now, imo.

But forever inextricably linked to the movie.

Imagine if this song was not associated with the movie, Batman, and that all the film dialogue was removed, and Prince just dropped the song like that. Just the instrumental parts. Titled it "Rave unto the Joy Fantastic" or something. I think people would have been tripping all over themselves to praise it as bold, experimental, and musically excellent.

what's really strange is that..."Batdance" was a Number One hit single for Prince, but it's not a song that he could (or would) ever perform in concert. It doesn't even appear on The Hits compilation. It's so connected to that 1989 movie,it doesn't get the opportunity to 'shine' on its own.

From WIKIPEDIA:

Ownership of the Batman franchise is notoriously complex. Prince had to agree to sign the publishing rights to the songs used in the movie over to Warner Bros.; therefore, Prince's hit singles from this album were not permitted to appear on any of his hits compilations, only the B-side singles "200 Balloons", "Feel U Up", and "I Love U in Me". Even on the concert T-shirts, which listed all of Prince's album titles to date, the song "Scandalous!" appeared in place of the album Batman. Despite this, Prince has performed a number of the album's tracks in concert over the years. A 2005 special edition DVD of the Batman movie contains Prince's related videos as a bonus feature (although "Partyman" is still edited down from the original longer version.

I was aware of this but to this day don´t quite understand the details. I mean, he was signed to Warner Brothers anyway, even for years after the Batman album came out. Why couldn´t he mention that album on the t-shirt? Why couldn´t he use songs from it on a Warner Bros. greatest hits compilation if Warner owned both , the former albums AND the Batman album?

Can you please elaborate on the details?

If Prince performed the "Ooh yeah/Ooh yeah/I wanna bust that body right" part of "Batdance" during a sampler set would make the crowd go crazy. He couldn't perform the song in its entirety back in 1989 or 1990 but I would like to see be part of the sampler set for just ol' time sake.

I'm telling you, this song has been very underappreciated for its genius. Oh lawd . . . now I want to listen to the entire album once again.

Awesomeness: Reconfirmed. I forget how great this album is. Back when P still sounded inspired. And his sneaky sexual inuendo was in full effect: "Hey Ducky, let me stick the 7" in the computer." eek

The video is exceptional. Prince really put in a lot of work and hours on the choreography and attention to detail with the Joker persona was great performance art.

As a kid I loved the music video so much smile Someone above wondered if another movie song was cleverly marketed as such - I couldn't help but notice "On Our Own" from Ghostbusters II, another really effective movie commercial disguised as a song.
