Anyway, the one I can't stand is the annoying "oh oh oh" of Johnny.

Resolution. Could have been written by a 12 year old. I'll never listen to it again.

Different strokes for different folks an all that but I cant believe songs like Somewhere Here On Earth, Family Name, Man O War, Another Lonely Christmas are getting mentioned.

My vote goes to Purple & Gold. A total deception and utter disgrace. The Vikings or whatever they are called should ban Prince for life for setting them up with this atrocity.

I cant stand to hear, "Walk In Sand"

Agreed. Family Name is Prince at his absolute best.

My pick for worst... probably Graffiti Bridge. But picking worst is sort of like picking best. There comes a point where you can't really distinguish between how good songs are, they're just that good, (and Prince has plenty: IIWYGF, JIR, etc), and at the same time, there's a level, somewhere under the dogshit, where everything evens out.

If you are talking about the Lincoln lyric then technically it is correct. Abe was definitely in support of slavery before his 2nd term. And the Emancipation Proclamation freed the slaves in the Confederate states not America.

Bad musicality and vocals, Prince getting a chip placed in his ass, voices playing and talking crap about Race: African American and then don't get me started with the Pearlman and the reading out of Jewish surnames part. Anti Semitic, racist, stupid and uninspired dogmatic crap. I stand by my hate for it.

.

Amazing how no one disagrees over Purple and Gold, that song is excreable, and the worst real song (Since we are not including songettes like Orgasm, segues, NPG Operators, Instrumentals and Kamasutra tracks along with any Affirmations) lol.

Has anyone defended Purple and Gold yet, that is a terrible song!

If you are talking about the Lincoln lyric then technically it is correct. Abe was definitely in support of slavery before his 2nd term. And the Emancipation Proclamation freed the slaves in the Confederate states not A"merica.

FIRST--Avalanche is far from Prince's worst song.

"Technically"--but the lyric acts like there's something particularly notable about Lincoln's position here--which ignores the fact that his views were radical and progressive enough IN HISTORICAL CONTEXT that HALF THE COUNTRY SECEDED on his election because they were scared of what he'd do about their whole slavery set-up. There was a reason they were scared, and it wasn't because he was pretty much just like them, which is how the song suggests things were. Most abolitionists (which Lincoln wasn't, at the very least not publically and probably not at all) were racist--but that doesn't change the fact that in context they were progressive, and without them things wouldn't have moved forward.

.

Actually, my problems with the song have more to do with the other verse--musicians feeling cheated by industry people was hardly something unique to the black experience, and much of what he knows about what was going on artistically (and much of what went on, honestly) resulted from the almost Satanically described tempters like John Hammond. Country's development into anything beyond a regional music relied on a lot of people who felt disrespected and cheated by the industry people who got their music on disc, too--and those were primarily white artists. Was Hammond racist? I honestly don't know--but the story seems simplified, and heavily influenced by Prince's own sense that he "signed his kingdom over"--but I see how the man lives, and I can compare it to how everyone else lives. It certainly doesn't apply to him regardless of whether it applied in the past, and I feel uneasy here in much the same way I did when he wrote SLAVE on his face. Racism's obviously alive and well today, but I've always been a little uncomfortable when he parallels his own career issues with the past. And that's part of what's going on here.

.

And the chorus, which I can't quite make sense of--yes, the history of white treatment of both blacks and Native Americans is terrible, but who exactly is "supposed to take the weight, the responsibility" at this point. I'm not responsible for my mother and father's sins, much less those of people further back. I'm not sure what any of it means for dealing with racism TODAY, and the history in the song, while true to some degree, doesn't seem very complete.

.

But along with the lyrical issues, the song is also so pretty--the ache in that chorus melody--I sing along, in spite of the fact that I think it's half baked lyrically. It's a flawed song, in my view. But not at all his worst (not even his worst dealing with racial issues. We March musically has little to offer in my view).

Am I the only one who can't stand the vocal version of God? I love the instrumental, but I've never liked the vocal one.

afraid to say that I disagree about Purple & Gold. I think it's successful for what he was going for: a bizarre pre-jazz college anthem throwback. I'm not gonna say it's what I want from prince, and I certainly don't play the damn thing, but I think he succeeded in his intent with it.
