Lol, I voted for Parade from the beginning. You've just misinterpreted my reply. But in the end: who cares?! Two of his best albums anyway.

PARADE. no hesitation there.

LOVESEXY was the very first album since Dirty Mind, for me, in which there was a backwards slide creatively and songwriting-wise. I was slighlyt disapointed. A couple of good songs, one or two great ones and the majority would be filler or at best, b-sides on any other album prior.

What we didn't know at the time was that this would be the norm from here on out and Prince's "Genius Era" (1980-87) was over.

It also makes me think that some of his collaborators during the 84-87 period had MUCH more to do with the output than Prince would have us believe.

Love them both, and Parade has aged better (due to less reliance on synths), but I'd have to agree with Prince that Parade was put out before he had good enough songs in the bag.

Prince said he was only particularly proud of Girls and Boys and Kiss (maybe he is more fond of the non W&L tracks), but I think he is being harsh. I love Mountains, Anotherlover and Sometimes it Snows). The rest pad it out (but very well).

So I'd have to go Lovesexy. Although I prefer SOTT, I think Lovesexy is a sonic masterpeace.

Sorry, but this is laughable. It's a fucking masterpiece with not good enough songs on board, lol. I wish he would have been as critical as he was back then during the last 26 years.

It was just a conflict of people accusing him of 'selling out'

Remember the MTV interview where the America video was premiered

and he was questioned about the changes in his sound?

.

Prince the Rebel, gave into pressures.

.

AnotherLover & Sometimes It Snows In April are songs anyone who goes to a Prince concert goes crazy over. He plays Venus de Milo and Under the Cherry Moon continually as well

Prince the Rebel was having issues with his own rebellion against Purple Rain lol

Remember the 1985 MTV interview where he was being questioned that people were saying he 'sold out'? lol

The problem wasn't the album but the movie. Presentation of the music in the movie would have taken UTCM to another level. In 2014 Parade is an album lauded by music critics as one of his best.
And he plays Under the Cherry Moon, Venus de Milo, AnotherLoverHolenYourHead, Sometimes It Snows in April, Kiss, and as of 2009 Mountains regulary.
.
Yet he performs nothing from Lovesexy,

Like I said, I love both, but Prince was making those comments after the dust had settled. I think it was the Grafitti Bridge Rolling Stones interview where he made the comments on Parade (Thats from memory, so I might have the wrong interview).

Parade is lauded now, but contrary to popular belief, it wasn't so at release. It got mixed reviews.

I think Parade has aged better than any Prince 80's record, due to the lack of synths.

Lovesexy does it for me because it oozes his instant passion to produce something in a very short space of time. He doesn't over think things and we end up with the wild endings to songs like Alphabet, Glam Slam, Lovesexy and Positivity. Its like a bottled version of the 1999 passion. He clearly wasn't thinking about single releases looking at the nature of the song structures.

Had Prince sat on the album longer, I bet those would have been editted to fit a new song on.

When I put a pair of headphones on, Lovesexy just....hits me!

Oh I know, I was there, It had mixed reviews. But the movie really messed it up.

I remember after hearing the album (and finding out Old Friends 4 Sale was not on it) I still really liked it, but I remember seeing trailers for the movie and the cuts they used made it look really exciting. Like there was a lot of action, I just assumed he would feature the band.

.

I love both of them like SausageKing said Parade is like a 10 and right underneath it is Lovesexy.

But over these even still for me is Around the World in a Day

.

In the 1990 Interview mag interview he says "I don't regret anything about Under the Cherry Moon"

I think I remember him saying something about putting more time into Parade, I'll try to find it...

I remember that quote. He said "Parade was a disaster.Apart from "Kiss",there's nothing on it that I'm particularly proud of.I recorded it too soon after 'Around The World In A Day' and I just didn't have enough great songs ready.I'm not gonna make that mistake again".

hmmm I think he's a little harsh, but he does have a point. The album was hastily recorded.I think if he had taken his time, the album would have been much stronger and focused.

LOVESEXY. While Parade captures essence of sunny European beach side, Lovesexy takes me to a different, entirely Prince-ly landscape.

Wasn't Lovesexy also "rushed" in terms of recording time? Haven't checked dates on PrinceVault, but interesting to hear Prince comment on making Parade.

I don't think Parade was a disaster at all, a work of art. And I believe Prince came to realize that later on too. Even though I still enjoy Under the Cherry Moon, that was the thematic disaster. And if this is something he said in 1988 he was going thru his Wally emotions

.

The music definately matches the movies time period, and works perfectly.

Plus he included the Bsides and Mia Bocca. I love the piano opening piece

Again, he regularly performed songs from Parade from 1987-2014, but not Lovesexy and definately not Emancipation

I've come to appreciate Lovesexy more in recent years, but Parade is my favorite album of all time by anyone.

Regarding Prince's comments about Parade, I thought I read that it was the only time when he gave songs to Wendy & Lisa to finish for him and perhaps that's why he considered it a disappointment--the fact that it wasn't totally his product.

So many songs before and after that he did the same:Strange Relationships, Old Friends 4 Sale some Purple Rain era stuff, and Dream Factory/SOTT stuff

Lovesexy.

Parade's production has aged way better but I end up skipping a ton of the piano pieces and unfinished sounding tracks. As an album, the vignette style works well, but I would rather listen to the full blown funk tracks of Lovesexy. The tunes might not be the strongest, but I'm also a huge fan of the Black Album and it wasn't wall to wall with hits. I like when Prince has room to stretch and try out all kinds of funky shit.

Not that Lovesexy sounds 'black' at all.

I would say from the org the race/ethnicity of anyone is moot

race is NEVER moot...it affects peoples perceptions of different mediums, all over the globe...executive and legislative decisions are made, people are hired, fired, prosecuted and persecuted based on racism everyday...that said, i admire and respect your desire to make it a moot point,if only at this site...
