Lovesexy for me, it's a brilliant album with only one bad track on it, Dance on smile Unfortunately Dance on was a sign that now Prince would start adding rubbish songs on his albums. Other than that there's lot's of strong songs like Lovesexy, Anna Stesia, Positivity, When 2 R In Love, I wish u heaven smile

^ Great reply. biggrin

Lovesexy is indeed a very fine album - so uplifting and positive, imo Lovesexy is a true pop funk masterpiece.

I agree Dance On is the only kind of weaker track.

I love the rest of the songs, and the production with many layers and those screaming guitars, excellent. cloud9 cloud9

I actually like Dance On, I don't think it's weak

I think it's his 'masturbatory' song like he usually has but with a socially conscious message. Still masturbatory in terms of Prince. I think the music is wild like I like it

I really wish I had Lovesexy with each song individually tracked. I had a version once, but there's a loud audio flaw right in the middle of Anna Stesia. Shitty.

Parade's my choice too... I just wanted to give a shout out to the cassette, because that's the form I listened to it in the most. As with everything (outside of some 12-inch singles) else from then until The Hits/The B-Sides.

Didn't Prince say he wasn't satisfied with the result of Parade because of it being rushed etc. Haha, he really doesn't know anything about the quality of his music.

Yeah that was deflecting, the music had too many options to choose from

If Parade was rushed, then what was Lovesexy, and album he recorded in less that 3 months(?)

The issue was not the music but the movie that did not feature the music(with live renditions)

Weren't those comments part of his also arguing that he hadn't lost the funkiness during the Around the World and Parade periods, which he argued both really came alive and were funky in concert. It just seemed like to me he was trying to distance himself from the idea that he'd gotten too far from his roots, or something.

Yes, I think even then he was struggling with breaking out of the mold and really 'finding a style of his own' vs pleasing those who wanted him to stay in the 1999 mode.

I mean the ATWIAD & Parade albums are perfection, class(ic) just exquisite pieces of art

and of course like even Dirty Mind Controversy & 1999 with the band they became even better live.

His roots were those 1976/77 piano demos, that all/most of his later music were built on like New Position Kiss Strange Relationships Purple Rain

But it's really during that 1981-1886 period were his sound was truly his own

Parade.

Every track flows together and it's just a fun record, especially the extended cuts.

I enjoy Lovesexy but it feels like patchwork once knowing the history.

Anna Stesia and I Wish U Heaven are favs but never liked Alphabet St.

Parade

I think it may be my favorite he ever released.

A good freind and fellow Prince fan told me when he first listened to the album it did not sound like anything he had ever heard before.

I tend to agree. I was in 6th or 7th grade when it came out and my mother drove to the record store to get it for me before we went to a lake that summer. I ended up just sitting on the shore listening to it with headphones over and over. The first time I heard Girls and Boys I was blown away.

The album to me is pure Prince, the best example of his talent, imagination and HIS sound. I love the artwork, the live renditions he played on tour (like Life Can Be So Nice) the extended mixes that were released and even Under The Cherry Moon which I saw twice in the theater.

There is soo much passion and a perfect balance of all things Prince, God, love, lust pain and sorrow. Not too much of anything on this album. Perfect.

So yeah, Parade.

Parade all the way! It has an amazing flow and is a great and satisfying listen. Lovesexy has a couple of great songs but as a whole it never worked for me.

Yes it is, in Many ways I see this as a different side of his Purple Rain

I call Parade Purple Chic, classy era it should have been longer. It would have if Under the Cherry Moon had performance scenes (Girls & Boys video could easily have worked in the movie) / and Prince let the real movie director finish

Robert Christgau needs to chime in:

"

Prince and the Revolution: Parade [Paisley Park, 1986]
Musically, this anything but retro fusion of Fresh's foundation and Sgt. Pepper's filigrees is nothing short of amazing. Only the tin-eared will overlook the unkiltered wit of its pop-baroque inventions, only the lead-assed deny its lean, quirky grooves, both of which are so arresting that at first you don't take in the equally spectacular assurance with which the singer skips from mood to mood and register to register. I just wish the thing weren't such a damn kaleidoscope: far from unifying its multifarious parts, its soundtrack function destroys what little chance the lyrics have of bringing it together. Christopher is Prince, I guess, but nothing here tempts me to make sure. I'd much rather find out whether the former Rogers Nelson really takes all this trouble just so he can die and/or make love underneath whatever kind of moon, or if he has something less banal in mind. A-"

"

Lovesexy [Paisley Park, 1988]
He's a talented little guy, and this has plenty of pizzazz. But I'll take The Black Album's fat-bottomed whomp over its attention-grabbing beats and halfway decent tunes any day, and despite appearances it sure ain't where he explains why sexiness is next to godliness--lyrically it's sloppy if not pseudo if not stupid. This is doubly bothersome because added religious content is what it's supposed to have over its not terribly shocking alternative. Leading one to the obvious conclusion that the real reason the little guy made the switch was that he was scared to reveal how, shall we say, unpop he could be. B+"

Never been a fan of reviewing full albums. There's always one or more songs on each album that I really dislike. For instance,I can't stand Christopher Tracy's Parade, Under the Cherry Moon, Venus de Milo (Insert Alexa de Paris instead), Do U Lie? and Sometime it snows in April (He has done waaaaaaaaay better ballads and more interesting. It just drags). On the other hand I really ADORE all the other work. Like A++ material. And the fact that it came out when Starship recorded "Nothing Gonna stop us now" just makes me think that he's to good for this planet. The production is fucking timeless.

Lovesexy. It is brilliant and another reason is that I used to work at a record store and people would come in and instantly make fun of the LP cover. Most would put it down and walk away. At the time I felt like I was the only one who was listening to it. Parade is fucking awesome too.

i originally commented based on memory, possibly influenced by public opinion...but after listening to both today, ive changed my mind...i DO like Lovesexy better...Parade has a brighter, more colorful feel to it, and seems to have more sonic depth and cohesion in its entirety...but even though it sounds darker, Lovesexy is the more soulful, "blacker" album..it also has more compelling lyrical content...the best songs on Lovesexy are better than the best songs on Parade...

Lovesexy > Parade

2 of his best albums though
