As I was listening to the song anew, while writing my previous post, I kept feeling this really strong '80's vibe off of it and it was nagging at me why that was. Really hard to place. The sound and feel of the track kept taking me back to Dirty Mind. At first I thought it sounded like "Gotta Broken Heart Again", but that wasn't it. Then I thought it was "When You Were Mine". There's a bit of similarity with the way he played guitar in one little segment, but that wasn't it either. Then after I went offline and was getting ready for bed, it became suddenly clear: the Neon Rendezvous rehearsal was reminding me of Cindy Lauper's "Time After Time". Not that the songs sound alike--they don't--but the guitar sound on both tracks feels strikingly similar. Curious given the fact that Cindy covered WYWM on the same album that "Time After Time" is on. Maybe a bit of cross-influence there.

Obviously you're referring to the Shiela E version as you haven't heard the 84 Birthday show in soundboard quality as you haven't heard any bootlegs.

I think the rehearsel version could be my favourite prince and the rev ever . It captures him and the band at the top . The vibe on it is unreal . Saying that the main gig has to be one of the best to .

What rehearsal is Desire from? I think I've got all the others.

Actually, I was able to find it, nevermind, are there any other ones you particularly like?

Nothing Compares 2 U(the St Paul & Susannah on lead) but the Revolution on instruments(it sounds like Another Lonely Christmas)
the version of Feline I go crazy over is the 30min piece, the Rock version

I enjoy the Eric Leeds Parade version too

I'm pretty sure that version doesn't have the revolution on instruments. Just Prince and Eric Leeds. And of course, Clare Fischer.

Thank you, I'll work my way through these. I tend to focus most of my bootlegging efforts on 86 stuff, but this era has loads of gems as well.

Yeah me too, I think the biggest set of boots are from the at period

But the 1983-1986 period yields some of the mos tasty morsels

That period moved so fast

I had a near perfect quality bootleg of the 20min Neon Rendezvous, from the 1984 rehearsal. To this day, it's my alltime favorite Prince performance. that ending..."sitting in this cafe, waiting on my baby" is so unearthly haunting. You can hear the lonliness in his voice......waiting on his love that never arrived. The music and vocals were perfection. I could go on and on gushing about this song. It's one of the few songs I leave on repeat for hours.

"Unearthly" is a good way to put it. Prince's singing on the rehearsal track is phenomenal...

Yeah, it's on the 2008 revised version of the first volme, it might be on the original version but I'm not sure, I'd imagine that even if it does the revised version would have better quality. There's also a FBG version of the rehearsal available, although since that came out in 2008 that's probably where Sab got their copy for the revised Purple Rush.

Thanks! I realized I had FBG's Noon Rendezvous for like 2-3 years now, but never listened to it. I checked it out on the way home tonight. It's damn good. However, the song Noon Rendezvous is not one of my favorites. Nor is it on the soundboard show either. I just find it a little dull in comparison to the other tracks (except for Free, which is a snoozer). Erotic City and Something In the Water kick ASS though. Wow! They almost rival the soundboard show versions.

I don't know why I said "had" when I still have it. Anyway, I had a friend make a CD for me, from the old site Joox. It was a first generation bootleg, so the sound is pretty darn clear. It's just not surround sound. It's as loud as my current CDs. I still listen to it. It reminds me of the amazing music Prince use to make/release. The songs on that CD are:

Erotic City

Free

(a brief rendition of all the critics love U in New York instrumental)

Something in the Water Does Not Compute

When Doves Cry

17 Days

Irresitable Bitch

Neon Rendezvous

all of them are the best versions of those songs, to this day.
