ROLLING STONE (1990)

At first it seems strange for to hear Prince talking in such fond and nostalgic terms about Day and the band. Day left the Minneapolis fold right after Purple Rain, with some nasty words about the boss's supposedly dictatorial ways. Now, Prince says, "I honestly don't remember how we got it together again."

Day's old charge of overbossing, however, brings a quirkier and crosser memory. "That whole thing came from my early days, when I was working with a lot of people who weren't exactly designed for their jobs," Prince says. "I had to do a lot, and I had to have control, because a lot of them didn't know exactly what was needed."

The most often-told tale involves Prince firing the then-unknown Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis from the Time in 1982. Jam and Lewis, all parties now agree, left a Time tour on a day off to produce their first record for the SOS Band. A freak snowstorm in Atlanta grounded them for an extra day, and the two missed a gig. When Jam and Lewis returned, they were summarily fired. Jobless, the two missed Purple Rain, so they set up as producers and went scrounging for clients. In the years since, they've produced everyone from Janet Jackson to Herb Alpert, becoming the other superpower on the Minneapolis music scene.

"I'm playing the bad guy," says Prince, "but I didn't fire Jimmy and Terry. Morris asked me what I would do in his situation. Remember, it was his band."

Despite the rap, Prince says, he harbors no ill will toward the now-famous producers working across town from Paisley Park at their Flyte Time studios. "We're friends," he says. "We know each other like brothers. Jimmy always gave me a lot of credit for getting things going in Minneapolis, and I'm hip to that. Terry's more aloof, but I know that." And their music? "Terry and Jimmy aren't into the Minneapolis sound," Prince says. "They're into making every single one of their records a hit. Not that there's anything wrong with that, we're just different."

Jerome opens the door of the CADDY,
helps Morris out. The CROWD recognizes
them immediately, rushes in for a closer
look. Morris loves the attention,
plays to their enthusiasm with a relish.
Jerome snaps a comb into his hand, holds
up a pocket mirror ...

Morris combs his hair dramatically, the
Crowd encouraging him on. Jerome gives
him the OK sign, ushers him into the
club.

CUT TO:


(16) INT. CLUB (1st AVE. ST. BAR) -- NIGHT

Jerome makes his way through the crowd,
blazing a path for Morris who is
surrounded by a dozen BABES.
Occasionally Morris glances at Prince --
discloses by his look that he doesn't
care much for his act -- or his music...

He breaks off from the Girls, follows
Jerome to the backstage entrance where
they're joined by other MEMBERS of The
Time -- JESSE and JELLYBEAN among them.
Morris casts another glance toward
Prince, breaks into a self-satisfied
grin--

MORRIS
We're going to slay him...
(screams)
Whawhak!

"Let's Get Crazy" continues as we...

BACKSTAGE
as Morris and The Time pass Prince on
their way to the stage--

MORRIS
Why don't you stay awhile, see
how it's done.

The Band Members bust up -- but Prince
ignores them, then--

MORRIS and The Time rip into a funk tune
called "Jungle Love." Their stranglehold
on the audience is instantaneous.
Morris struts across the stage like a
panther, playing to the audience with a
relish. His eyes fastened on Prince --
his pride umistakable

MORRIS meanwhile is beside himself.
Some gorgeous, dark-haired babe, eyes
wide as saucers was starlng at him from
the bar. Prince has left, and this girl
is his. He motions to Jerome, and they
direct their act in her direction.

JILL gazes at Vanity, fidgets intensely,
suspicious and resentful of her. She
glances up and notices Morris, look.
She seizes upon an idea, forces a
friendly smile, taps Vanity on the
shoulder--

JILL
Hey ...

She points to the stage. Vanity looks
at Morris, and he goes crazy,
entertaining her with his own special
blend of showmanship. The CROWD loves
it! Vanity is held a moment, but her
thouchts are elsewhere. She finally
comes to a decision, pulls away, cuts
through the club.

Initial tracking took place on 26 March, 1983 at Sunset Sound, Hollywood, CA, USA (the day before My Summertime Thang and Cloreen Baconskin). While reflecting on the track's history on Facebook in 2014, Jesse Johnson wrote "Jungle Love- Saved my food $ the 1999 Tour came home bought a Tascam reel to reel 8 track recorder and came up with music for JUNGLE! Prince [wrote?] every word+melody and kilted it." He later added, "I used Prince's Hohner Tele to play the rhythm guitar part ... Did the solo at a later date in LA @ Sunset Sound using the Pink G&L prototype + my fawn colored 1979 Marshall JCM 800," indicating that a second recording date took place.

Jesse Johnson was initially included in the credits when submitted for copyright in May, 1984, but after he left the band, his name was removed from the credits when the track was released.

Am I the only one who was slightly disappointed with Ice Cream Castles?

I just don't think it's a strong Time album."Jungle Love" has a great groove,but the song is too repetitive."The Bird" is alot of fun,but seems hastily thrown together."Chili Sauce" is filler,and the slow jam "If The Kid Can't Make U Come" is just downright silly

The previous album What Time Is It? is a pure masterpiece.A true classic!

Maybe the departure of Jam and Lewis is to blame,or maybe Prince was rushed and didn't have enough time to make the album special,but Ice Cream Castles lacks that 'extra something'.

After What Time Is It? Yes Ice Cream Castles feels 'undone'

I love the Title Track, and actually enjoy most of the music on the album

but something is missing.

The Bird & Jungle Love feel like a different album
I think if Prince released a Purple Rain Soundtrack those songs would be perfect alone, they don't seem to fit Ice Cream Castles.
I always felt My Drawers should have had a little more Let's Go Crazy

they knew how to use the eyes and make some serious face

Morris Day, although he did have a moderate successful solo career after "Purple Rain", should have been HUGE! He had the comedic chops. He could have been the next Eddie Murphy or Mike Epps. Now he is stuck playing the Morris Day character that created the rest of his life.

It's quite sad. still has power over him 4ever....

He has the capabilities to break out of that easily

And they had it with the 07 group/album

3.) should do some stuff with some of the others from his time with Prince, Sheila E, Revolution members(I would love Lisa & Wendy to produce him) do some music with the Family

When I auditioned for The Time...(laughs faintly) I was scared to death. I'll never forget it. I was, of all things, on vacation in a place called Breezy Point and I got the call for the audition.

The first time I met Prince was at the first callback—my second audition (with The Time). He wasn't at the first one. I was nervous. He was this big rock star.

He's stuck in an old school 80's revival tour mode. Wendy & Lisa CAN'T & NEVER have written a hit 4 anyone! Morris needs Bruno Mars to write and produce a hit 4 him like. "Uptown Funk"! windows provides the setting. SUNLIGHT
streams through tattered yellow shades.

The Time is set up on one side providing
the music for "Sex Shooter" a saucy
number with an irresistible beat.

Morris, with Jerome by his side, stands
in the middle of the floor, SHOUTS
instructions to...

...BRENDA and SUSAN, gamely trying some
intricate dance steps. Brenda is 21
years old, blond, sexy, with an alluring
new-wave look. Susan is 16 years old,
with dark, lustrous hair and a sexy baby-
doll quality. Right now they're tired as
hell, and a little angry--

MORRIS

The MUSIC stops, the girls come to a

MORRIS
That powder fine babe we saw
last night.

JEROME
Oooh, yeee! -- Why don't we

Morris snaps an address in front of his

MORRIS

JEROME

MORRIS
I got it! The hubcaps. We
need something sweeter.

JEROME
I think I know what it needs.

Morris is pondering his Stacy Adams--
