Tired of the Prince Bashfest? Me too! Is anyone else here tired of the constant Prince bashing? It’s actually contagious! Fans ripping into him at the first opportunity -- and then turning on other fans for the slightest things (like threads that weren’t named to their specifications; liking an album they didn’t like [A *ahem O *ahem A]...). I never really got the chance to examine his Facebook page while it was up, but if the stuff done in this forum was carried over to there, why he closed down the page would no longer be a mystery to me. May I kindly suggest that you view Prince and his work in a different light? Instead of being merely hungry consumers waiting for the next meal, be fellow journeymen/women. Be creative. Make music. Paint. Dance. Sing. Then come back to check in ever so often to see what he’s been up to. Speaking as an artist and musician, I think being quick to be ultra-critical of an artist’s work is a tragedy and unfair. Every artist and musician can tell you about the great amount of time they put into their craft. (Sometimes it’s very lonely work.) Yet I seriously doubt that any critic has ever put as much time into listening to a Prince album as he did in making it. And not every great work is an immediate success. The way some here talk about Art Official Age or any other album after the early ’90s, you might think that Prince hadn’t made any good music since then. In the shadow of epics like The Rainbow Children, the pop masterpiece Musicology, and the tender One Night Alone, I sometimes wonder of we’re talking about the same Prince! Just wanted to share that. Feel free to disagree. PS - For the record, the first official Prince album I ever bought was Emancipation. I’ve heard even celebrities critique that album! Again, it made me wonder if they’re even really listening to it.

If there is anything in this world that can get people to fight, berate, belittle, and insult one another, it is politcs, religion and Prince, it's a constant in our world that will likely never change. When a new Prince ablum/song hits, prepare to have a whole lot of panties in a bunch and whole lot of people hating every song, hating everyone who likes the song, but then coming out with an appreication thread of their own a few weeks later. It's a cycle that has been happening year for over a decade.

I completely agree with you jwar. I look at Prince and my appreciation of him as an artist very very differently than most people do on this site. And no I don't worship him and avoid sharing my views of disappointment of him at times. But the way most people view him and his music and what he does or doesn't do is from a view point of pure selfishness. He is a musician first and foremost. Yes he is in the public's eye and he choose that but he like anyone else has a right to his personal and private life. I appreciate his music and what he shares with the world musically, nothing else. He has given me so many happy memories along the way in my life that it would seem purely greedy for me to put him down because he doesn't do things the way I think he should do them. I want Prince to be exactly the way he wants to be, with all his wiered eccentricties intact. That's what drew me to him in the first place. So do I understand where people come from when they say why didn't he do this or why didn't he do that. That would made so much more sense, etc... But thats looking at everything from our perspective. Selfish. Let P be P. Let him have a flawed life like the rest of us including me. I come to this site because Prince's music over the years have given me so much joy and has helped me through some of my darkest times. So in return I am just glad to appreciate what this artist shares with the world. And he is generous with his musical output. He tours constantly. He is one of the busiest if not the busiest popular musicians out there. Hands down. Evey go to a Prince concert and not only witness his musical prowness but also his great sense of humor? It's always on display. But this site is weird. It's full of negative people saying he is a has been or he is stupid for how he conducts himself. These people are missing the point in my opinion. He's human and I don't pretend to know him personally. We all have issues we have to work out in this thing called life. So I tend to always go back to focus on the music. That's the one constant. I don't know another popular musicain who has more of an impact on music than him over the last 30-40 years. In the end yes people here can share thier opinions and views on Prince and his music. But to me a "Prince fan community site" is a place to celebrate this man and this man's music. And there is alot to celebrate. If your not feeling it anymore than move on and find another place to be negative. This place should be internet's paisley park. A place to have fun and a place to make insightful and positive comments about the man that makes so much great music. And if there is something not so great to say there is way to express it so it doesn't come across as bashing. So yeah I am very tired of the Prince bashfest. Here's to some positivity!

Why do you read it? Stop it. What?

I have often wondered why so much negativity as well. It's because he doesn't fit into anyones box that he is who he is...

Thank you all, especially vinaysfunk, for sprinkling some additional positivity into the forums. With all the positivity infused throughout Prince’s music, maybe some people just aren’t getting the message! But, thankfully, many like you all who responded positively above, are. :) To anyone who would suggest I and others like me should just stop reading, well, I’m trying to sift through the bad to find the good. There are still many, good positive posts around here that are worth the time it takes to read.

i don't get the extreme negativity either. i support any individual's right to voice a negative opinion about music/movies/books/art they purchased and which disappointed them. that being said, the threads and posts on this website elevate the bashing to an entirely different level. in some cases it seems unhealthy, imo

A really truly fantastic post. I agree with you so much. ultimately Prince may well have simply made a couple of albums and called it a day. He has given me enormous joy and utliamtely when it ocmes down to what I have paid for his work over the years versus what he has delivered I owe Prince a thousand times what I have paid. The huge amount orf stuning work he has created is truly something and I am also always amazed that even now ofater all this time I believe he is creating challenging and engaging work which still moves me! Great post vinaysfunk !

A really valid point, work often takes a great deal of time to make and a certain amount of time to really appreciate. Thhe choices taht are made are not immediately obvious and the one thing that I love about Prince is that we don't get what we expect.
The strange things is that I find Prince himself an incredibly Positive person who explores his life through his art. I think this Positivity ultimately beneifts the person themselves, it is so easy to be cynical about things I understand more than most but it is not always best for us. [Edited 1/31/15 9:46am]

I don't see it as negativity. I see it as debate and critical analysis. Part of the reason there's so much on Prince.org is due to the inherent nature of Prince as a risk taking and controversial (to his fans) artist. If he released boring, cookie cutter, Top 40 crap, we would have nothing to talk about. Instead, thank god, he constantly changes his sound and approach. For most fans, sometimes this works and sometimes it doesn't. Discussing the good and the bad is what makes this site interesting. If it was a positivity echo chamber, it might as well be some bullshit MJ forum. Also, this site is way more positive than it used to be. The Org was nasty back when Rave came out! "Drop that stereo before I blow your Goddamn nuts off, asshole!"

Hell...I long for the days when folks could have constructive criticism about Prince on this site. But you can't even get that anymore. It's now all Troll central....
When you see people talking on social media sites more measured in criticism and with more reverence than a site supposedly dedicated to Prince himself it's puzzling...
Prince should not be above criticism. I've posted my issues with dude on this very forum (the way he has dropped the ball in promoting AOA his VERY side-eye worthy...). But when I start reading posts about how Prince hasn't done anything interesting onstage in three years or pooh-poohing his airplay on R&B radio, I can only shake my head... I'm with you on this one. I am a firm believer in the word of God. His scripture reads,"there is death and life in the power of the tongue". People curse Prince and other people of the Org with their words. It's importanot to speak life rather than death. I mean really, someone will knock a new song from P and within my self I ask if they could do any better with a song. I think not! I don't always agree with Prince. I'm only in it for the music. And I enjoy all of his output. Make love not war. klick

Art and cristism go hand in hand. There is no troll about it. All artists knows this. Art is meant to be discussed. People are passionate about art. That's a good thing. It is ok to be critical. It's all subjective. Grow up people.

Nah...it's easy to seperate real constructive criticism from the Trolls on this site. Very easy...
Not everyone who has something to say about Prince is trolling. But u can point out the people whose only function on this site is to be Debbie Downers....

The whole "let's see you make a better song" argument is such nonsense. So when you don't like a movie you can't criticize the director because let's see you direct a major feature film? You can't criticize a restaurant because let's see you create a 4-star meal? "Drop that stereo before I blow your Goddamn nuts off, asshole!"

There was always a great deal of criticism on this site , rightfully so in countless cases where our hero or zero did not live up to the elevated expectations that come with being called a genius all the time.
Today, there are relatively few so-called fams who like everything compared to those who have nothing good to say about anything he's done recently or in years. Some of the latter are interesting folks, nice to have a different perspective from people who are well informed on some aspect of the business of making music or who have an extensive musical expertise.
There's a small but enertaining contingent of longtime Orgers acid tonguingly blasting what he does, always fun to have the Loyal Opposition sit across the chamber.
We have a couple of preacher-type on either side of the great purple divide, who are dogmatic about their assessment.
I enjoy following his music and am enriched by the criticism as it is a sprawling catalogue, no reason every song should be to everyone's liking, but it's all there as a mass of musical creativity, from groundbreaking to pedestrian or downright embarrassing, he.s delivered tracks of varying quality and styles, I don't think he ever expeced every person to be entirely happy with the results, so long as it passed his own test .
He still did all that and you I see no reason to speak of Prince in a condescending way, there are some people here who seem to think they know more about music, and yeah they know more about music theory., but they discuss Prince as if he was a mediocre musician easy to outperform and outshine. Little evidence of that yet, unless you're D'Angelo (whodidn't out Prince Prince, just paid him proper homage).

It's because the guy has the ability to amaze us, and also really disappoint us. He makes masterpieces, and also utter garbage. Secondly, Prince is, music aside, not a very nice person, who attracts not very nice fans. Kinda goes hand in hand. This is the without a doubt the rudest music fan site I have ever come across, tho. If you can't be arsed visiting the page, the basic idea is that you take basic ass posts that are typical of x forum and pop them into a video. Here is what I made:

. Yeah, why should anyone bitch about misleading thread titles, or thread titles that are utterly useless (like "question")? . Meanwhile in the real world StackExchange is scoring top marks all over the place for being a most informative cluster of website, most notably StackOverflow. Now how are questions treaded at that place? Oh yeah: stupid ones get downvoted; off-topic ones get reported to admins and closed; badly worded questions get edited... Guess what happens? QUALITY rises to the top. . Instead at the Org there's a race to the bottom. Note the Principedia link in the menu: why couldn't anyone be arsed to actually CONTRIBUTE to that? © Bart Van Hemelen
