Why I love Prince. The LOVE thread.

Many talk here about Prince's failings, but tbh, having worked with many high profile people....they have to be &&&&& sometimes because as much as they live well, there is the corresponding amount of a&&sholery that comes their way. Big fame and big money brings big drama in ways that are unfathomable if you're not living it, and its alot of work to learn to handle it. Many do not survive it. Thats why you see such high profile breakdowns ....everyone can't handle it all themselves and when they DO....their haters go into character assination. Prince has come up as a literal child through fame like no other. He's not broke, he's eccentric for sure...but he's not gone off the rails and crashed his life. Its as amazing a feat as his talent. He's not normal in very great ways that I suspect we all love....

Let's talk love. What do we LOVE?

I'll start...

Mastery of his craft. That passion.

Re-invention. The drive, again.

Courage to go left when everyone goes right. (makes us nuts but he's doing him)

Never, ever ever doing what everyone else does. When he does, its a sly joke smile

That voice. hello. of course.

That guitar. f-yeah.

That FACE. (Special mention for eys, and lips lololl) ....swoon, i'm a chick let me love it.

Those songs.

That cuuuute azz.

I'd like to keep this thread all about the love for the art, the music, the man....

Ps. yes Prince was fantastic once,

now he is struggling to be even recoqnized in the landscape, he is flying under the radar to most people/ the broader masses don't know about him anymore.

In no particular order:

1. Willing to offer his vision, "take it or leave it"

2. Legendary work ethic and dedication to craft

3. The complete reworking/arranging of songs that render them near unrecognizable, but still as good or better than the original (And I laugh everytime I see that album of Puffy's entitled "We invented the remix")

4. Live performances

5. Passionate delivery/execution of songs; ballads, uptempo, whatever - even when the song might be nonsensical. Prince usually goes all in - you ALMOST think the song you just heard makes sense, because Prince has most certainly sold it.

6. He has provided more music than seems possible, logical, or believable. (I WILL NEVER HAVE AN ISSUE WITH LACK OF PRODUCTION FROM PRINCE. At last count, I have 60 Prince CDs, and that's not including any of his ingenues/disciples and the like from the 70s and 80s and doesn't include the dozens of soundboards and downloads of concerts and rehearsals.)

To be honest, it is not possible for me to care less how Prince is recognized by most people or the broader masses. Prince will always be fantastic to me. And I will keep on going to concerts as often as I can (he can play the hits/bsides all he wants).

I hope Prince is at a place where he has made the money he wants, and he just puts out the music he wants. As long as he makes music, I'll certainly try to support it. He has had mountaintop fame, so hopefully thats not what he is hungry for - just music that satisfies him.

I hope he turns off the radar.

Could not agree more, especially regarding the amount of material that Prince has produced, who could really argue that they haven't been truly spoiled! The gap in the past few years has allowed me to truly go back and re-enjoy the wealth of material Prince has given us. A really great trip.

Prince has been the soundtrack of my life! I'm 47, and have been following his career since the beginning. I've loved (and lost) many contenders...Donna Summer, Rick James and Teena Marie... But for the fact that this man is still doing what he does and I'm still intrigued by his artistry is amazing! His career has had it's ups and downs, but he's human and I'm in for the ride!

He cant do EVERYTHING...but the breadth of his talent and skill set amazes me and I love it. That shitty yahoo live stream is a perfect example. He took two rookies and a bassist from another country and rehearsed them till he had a good act going...for hours on end the girls said they rehearsed...while that's happening...he got a jazz group working away, hes putting a couple trax together with Rita...potential, bougie, etc get sporadically released, he working on his own album as well...dude like literally lives music.
And the things he sacrifices to do it.

Flipside...what he cant do and what he is terrible is...delegating tasks that don't involve music. He rarely picks the right person....if it happens to work it's by a crazy accident.

I wonder if having too many stews on the stove is a symptom of 'seeing what sticks syndrome'....

you know when you're younger and on the come up, you always do 8 more things than you need, 'just in case'....

has Prince become so used to the grind as the norm... that it's become habitual - and wastes time on things that don't pan out?

I can relate to what P does, because I used to have other things to work on in my business downtimes that would keep me active and busy and keep the 'business is slow omg i'm failing' feelings at bey....

do you think he's afraid to NOT have 8 things going at once?

This is going to be long. Prince can sing:

  • Soprano
  • Mezzo-soprano
  • Contralto
  • Tenor
  • Baritone
  • Bass
I love EVERYTHING about Prince. He plays numerous musical instruments with extreme precision and professionalism. His songs can be funny, romantic, spiritual, inspirational, jazzy, rock, pop, R&B, etc. What other artist can sing any type of song - none because they are owned by the music industry which says "u belong in this category of music only." Prince is an artist not a performer. He wears what he wants and he has great style and grace. He appreciates other great musicians and he's not selfish with sharing the stage with them. He has also helped many other artists along the way (not just the ones with a pretty face). Oh, and there is NO comparision to his dancing, what other singers can dance in high heel boots the way Prince did and he NEVER once had to lip sync while doing it?! Prince is mega sexy, mysterious and his lyrics provoke. His lyrics are thought provoking and he addresses many social issues in society which many main stream artists are not allowed to. Prince also knows his self worth, that's why he went against the industry and refused to allow them to take advantage of him. Even after he went public with what the industry was doing to him, he didn't hide under a rock instead he continued to work and make amazing music. People try to say he's crazy but he's a genius. He has also never been accused of harming anyone or been accused of inappropriate behavior. He's a law abiding citizen. You don't see or hear of him falling out of night clubs. He's pure and perfect and he appreciates his fan so much he opens his house to them. He believes in real musicians and real singing, You always get more than what you expect when u see Prince in concert. Even the heavens blessed him with the perfect name "Prince." He was born royal and there will never be anyone else like Prince only wannabes and fake imitators.

Problem with the OP's points is that, except for voice and guitar (and his ass, for those of you who are 15), they all refer to the past. To a long time ago in a galaxy far far away....

Yeah, anyone who has lived a rock star life for 35 years and kept both his mental and physical health deserves our respect. He may not be the best businessman ever, but how many musicians were left broke by their managers? Or ended up in the gutter because of drugs and alcohol? Prince never allowed that to happen to him. Maybe being a control freak isn't so bad after all...
I won't even mention the music because it goes without saying that I love that.

Well said my friend. I am with you on this one, only I am 45. He is human and he can't do everything right. But the music, such a great artist, he is.

I love how he pays just as much attention to the beginning of a song as much as the end. In other words, the beginning of a song sounds different from what the end will sound like. Too many songs today sound the same in the beginning and at the end as if it were slapped together and released.

I believe Prince's music is better enjoyed if it were heard on headphones. You can hear every instrument, every voice or whatever sound effect he has going on. Dude is a genius and that's why I dig this thread. Too much hate for P. I choose love.

I think people skim over this too much, as if it doesnt take time and energy and superhuman strength & fortitude, because you know... PRINCE=superhero....AND they expect him to be a Mark Cuban too. Do we expect Mark Cuban to sing and dance? wink

Going against the established system, and believing in yourself enough to go it alone is a hard, lonely road. Prince's mistakes are typical of anyone who IS the 'talent' and the dealmaker.

This a million times! There arent many who can perform his songs either and get away with it, everything is unique to him, making it very clear how much a part of him his songs are.

When the songs AREN'T unique to him... we see it, we feel it, we know it, then we whine.... we get disappointed, but we're spoiled. Delightfully spoiled. His fault I say wink

He also uses silence really well. Prince can load up an arrangement, or he can strip it down and makes space for the lyrics to resonate. The music is complete without lyrics. The lyrics are complete without music, and he can merge them without disavowing one or the other.

I think because he lets us hear & see the messy steps in between the genius people think he's lost it or not working hard enough.... nah....there's alot of work that goes into everything, and even when its a throw away for him, you'll find out later where it ends up somehow...if you pay attention.
