I'd tell him its 2014 and he's not an Album artist anymore as much as he'd like to think he is.

Because by the time he gets them released he's already lost interest.

He should employ a team in house, designers, people to process orders from online/disbatch etc...

Release his singles on his own label as he makes them released Digitally and limited run vinyls (Say limited to 2500 copies) with a Vault track featured on each as one of the B-sides which would encourage his fanbase to buy into it. He could

Then just tour heavilly like Bruce springsteen does (One of the highest grossing artists because of his touring)

The more he tours the higher his popularity will go.

1) Keep him from meeting Larry Graham at all costs.

2) Have a better accounting team/be better himself at paying bills, band members, etc.

3) Convince him of the need to preserve & protect his musical legacy. Use this to gradually open the vaults with limited edition archival box sets released in chronological order.

4) Show him examples of how other artists actively engage with their fans in ways that don't involve lawsuits.

5) Develop & maintain a single, stable web site: prince.com & have him use it as a way to do #4.

6) Abandon the randomness in favor of more planned, widespread & regular tours.

7) Enroll him in classes about comparitive religion, science, history & sociology.

Kill him in 1994, at his commercial peak, just when he gave to WB COME and GOLD. This would have been posthumous releases that would have sold a lot. All of his back catalogue would have sold much more.

And then , releasing the vault, year after year.

"Prince esta muerto" I heard in early 1995.

It was a female on some stage saying that.

The fact that you cannot handle a simple hypothetical question shows how out of touch you (& others) in his fanbase are. More rational minds would recognize the reality that we have no say in Prince's career direction, but if we did, what would we do? Are you so far gone from reality that you can't even engage in hypotheticals? Learn to construct a sentence properly & then come back to the park & play with us.

the emotional ones always resort to dissecting grammar and sentence structure... no need for personal attacks though... like most people that prefer to engage reality, i see no need to hypothesize about the imaginary rescue, of the career of a man who has had arguably the greatest career of any solo recording artist ever... but ima let you finish

I understand both points of view. One is a hypothetical question in an alternate universe that has no bearing on reality. And the other is one base in reality that asks why would one even think of an alternatve reality? Again I see both sides. But my point it this. Once you change some thing in history at a specific point in time everything else changes as well. And it's true in my eyes that Prince is one of the few musical icons that is still around pumping out music that is relevant. Maybe not so much as in the charts etc... But have you ever watched a music show on tv and watch the crowds reaction to when Prince walks out on stage? And I mean the crowd is full of other popular musicians not fans. They get up on their feet and pay homage to the musical legend that so many of us respect so much. They are not like that to anybody. Music critics in the magazines and newspaper own write about Prince with much high regard. Current younger musicians cite hims often as a major influence. And his live acts are superior to all in my mind. I have alot of acts I like listening to but none that I would rather see live than Prince. And his influence in fashion and the internet and just his mystic is intact. For better or worse he does have an impact on popular culture. He is one of the most precious in that regard. So I don't want to hypothesize about what I would or could have changes about his career to "rescue" his career. Yeah of course there are hundreds of things I would consider changing to suit my fancy. For example I would have bypassed the whole Larry Graham period. But maybe that is what Prince needed at that time to move forward. I have no real idea. Only he knows. But in the end I accept his career at it is. No need to rewind and recast anything in my eyes. His career is intact and doing very well. Just my two cents

^ Yeah, but it's static. It's self-fulfilling in a bad way.

Prince keeps quoting himself musically. From a career point of view, and I mean career in the most artistical sense,

there is no risk taking.

I'd like Skipper to focus. There's Massive Attack, Prodigy, a lot of people out there that would have made "Love Thy Will Be Done" and "Loose!" absolute classics. THey are, but they're stuck in self-references and a universe of its own.

If he'd really sticked to the sharing visions he had with Lovesexy, he's grown enough to finally let go of the ego and enjoy the fact that there's no one who wouldn't refuse jamming with him.

I want "Witness" with Dave Grohl on the drums, fuck.
I want a duet with Elizabeth Fraser on "4 The Tears in Your Eyes" (if he really insists on playing Christian Rock).

Go out and explore. Last time he allowed someone in his music intimacy, it was the W&L years.
We all artificially shiver because some Daft Punk apprentice gets allowed to put a finger on the mixing desk.

But learning Joni Mitchell and Stockhausen by simply frequenting other sets of mind,
THAT drives creativity : Confrontation.

Skipper, honestly, you're getting too comfy.

Sorry, nice try. My first point was that you clearly have your head too far up the purple posterior to see any of the man's flaws. That's preventing you from even participating in a simple discussion. The fact that you can't construct a simple sentence? Well, that's something else entirely. Neither point has anything to do with emotion.

In a large part, it can be argued they go hand in hand. Yes, you can argue that commercially, some nitwit like Miley Cyrus can make a mint spewing out pop garbage, but she has an audience. The reality that not many here are willing to accept is that Prince's audience does not extend that far beyond this web site. Yes, there are people who enjoy his old hits & might be excited enough to see him if ever mounts a proper tour, but buy new music? Do you need any more proof than the non factors his two most recent releases were?

And he wants to be both. Years & years of bragging about being "#1 at the bank!" were coupled with desperate ploys for commercial success. Artistic success should mean having as many people as possible see & appreciate your work. Instead, he took a steaming pile of crap & called it Plectrum Electrum.

^ I disagree as well.

I couldn't care less about how much Tim Buckley, Big Star, Nick Drake, Me'Shell or any good shit out there sells or sold.

I certainly don't value Prince carrers on these terms, and neither does he.
Come on, the guy systematically does the opposite of what should be done, and we know he's clever.

His career needs curators, and collaborations.

Enough already with these nombrilistic poses.

little off topic but here's what he should do now

Prince should go back to touring big arena shows with Npg with his big hits

His career is never gona die cause he's Prince but this new band thing is not really resonating with the masses.

It's no surprise that the new Prince album is outperforming the 3rdeyegirl album..

Stick with NPG and focus on your career instead of trying to push young artists like 3rdeyegirl or Andy.

Give Purple Rain the treatment it deserves..

Put out a good dvd concert full of hits.

and put out couple more quality albums if he got that in him

so ya.. forget Andy, 3rdeyegirl and just come out with it

... without the fro

He's at that stage in his career where people will still be interested in all of this stuff. I only hope he does it before he's 80 or so, when his name won't be AS remembered. Ironically, most people in my high school know him more form the Chapelle spoof than anything else.

How is he clever...?

In the beginning of his career he made some controversal, gut-based decisions that turned out really well (like removing the bass from When Doves Cry and putting that out as the first single).

This led him to believe that he was unfallible, where in fact it already went wrong with removing the bass from Mutiny and High Fashion. And nowadays people are just too scared or dependent on him to tell him the truth.

I wasn't aware he removed the bass from those two songs (I love them)

He was infallable for some time, but I guess he either didn't realize or didn't care that people got over 'the Prince mystique' fast and he couldn't afford to act that way anymore without repurcussions
