They just tweeted a link out a link to the song on youtube. Listening to it and the synth breakdown sounds like a sports arena mix. Can't belive he threw this (up) on the original album configuration. It should be a remix on an EP at best.

Was thinking exactly that as I listened to it. It may grow. I'm baffled. lol

Here's a question though. If this wasn't Prince, would we ever give it a second spin?

Probably not. But maybe thats the point.

So a few people like it... I am usually very positive but in this case, it's the first time I am happy when a song ends. Not sure it will grow on me either, I can't see myself give it a chance...

Just bought the full version

From 3.00 minutes on it goes into an EDM mess !!!

I liked CLouds and U Know but dont like this version of funknroll

It starts like a Missy Elliot remix of Work It (which I do like) but it just isnt as good as the original which hopefully is on the 3EG album

Ok now I've listened to the whole thing, albeit not in the best quality and the verdict is.....

I love it -- the version he played on Arsenio is for the old timers. This one is Prince playing with his studio toys à la 1999 but full 21st Century, throwing a dash of electro-rockabilly in the second half.

It fits with the Art Official Age sound so far. The other version is great as well -- looking forward to hearing it on the other record.

I'm sittting thinking what to say but I'm just confused.

i'm sitting here thinking the same thing. i think what throws me off so much is that

it's so different, yet they've kept the 'rock' elements of the original, like the bridge,

which i find really difficult to stomach in this version. it's just so jarring.

/

but for what it's worth i actually like the welton production. wether it has any kind

of staying power after a few weeks/months remains to be seen. but at least it's a

bit different and not another 'oh this is the funk song', 'oh this is the typical balad'

kind of album where every song sounds like an imitation of a (better) older one.

going on what we heard from josh in last year's live streams, and the remixes for

fixurlifeup and pretzelbodylogic and the breakfast can wait EP, i think it's basically

just a full on josh remix of the song with little input from prince.

Just listened to the whole song. One listen and I enjoyed it. The feeling I got was...hm if he took a song from Sign of the Times and dressed it up to be released in the year 2014 this is how it might sound. Still, I need to hear this more often and on a better sound system.

If that's the case, then he has a Ph. D. in Princology by now because I could think of four different Prince songs while listening to this one track. Picture: Camiile's youngest daugther comes across a copy of Let's Go Crazy right after being introduced to Let's Pretend We're Married, slapping some of both on her own devastating kiddytron beats. Sounds squeaky but it gels.

And the bloke must be having the time of his life. What a priviledge! Maybe the whole album is that. Maybe Prince gave Josh all his new songs and said 'here, disect them and come up with something fresh'. If that is the case he must has gave strict instructions to leave The Breakdown alone. That song sounds so bland and 'Prince by the numbers' compared to the other 3 we've heard. 'Please let me do something to the Breakdown Prince?'...... 'No Josh, leave it alone'..... 'Pretty please Prince'.... 'Ok, you can put some lasers in it but thats all!'.

I'm not sure what the big deal is about this track. Is it great? No. Is it as mind-blowingly awful as Whitecaps? No. (Throw Hannah on a couple vocals and any song becomes shit, though). It's just...okay. Middle of the road. Not awful. Better than the BCW remixes by far due to it retaining the verses and chorus, and who knows, it might be an okay song to do cardio to.

It's the Art Official version. There's going to be a dichotomy between the two versions and this one sounds right for the record. I am big on both versions just like I liked both RnR versions.

As for Josh, people complain for years Prince doesn't work with another producer and the minute he does, it's all the other person's work? I don't buy it.

My issue is that he didn't go with a modern, hot or recognised producer, but threw in his drummers other half. It was probably so he could control/teach him, more like a protege thing, but its a wasted opportunity to get someone in who could add another dimension to his sound.

This is why I've never wished for Prince to use a producer. I'm yearning for the good old days. No, not the revolution, at the moment I'd be happy wiht Tony M. lol

I do kind of want to listen to it again, I did like the ending as I think back to it. Come on album, leeeeak. I don't want to have to wait for the 29th but I don't want these songs played out before I have them all.

if anything, it's interesting to see what the end result is when he gets

someone else in to do a lot of the production.

so i don't see it as 'this is shit because josh produced it'. at least it's

different. and i'm curious how it all works as an album.

/

another thing i'm liking this far about this album is that most of the

songs we've heard have a "WTF?" moment. the vocals at the end of
Breakfast, the 'interlude' on Clouds and this last minute or so on the

AOA version of FunknRoll (even the idea that U Know is bacically an

entire fundament by someone else, rebuilt into a prince tune). there

are curveballs, i like that.

/

well except for the lasers in Breakdown, that was a curveball that

hit me right in the middle of the face lol

This is all sensible. Josh can't be blamed if I don't like it, at the end of the day Prince must be happy with it or he wouldn't have put it out there. So there it will stand with the rest of his work. It's going to be very interesting listening to it as an album. And it is good that Prince is doing something different and not just cruising.
