I think Prince should beat the shit out of her. Sinead-style. eek

Enough already people. We just proved that both Prince, Meshell, and anyone who chose to rip either one of them to be rotten people. We don't know either one of them personally and therefore don't have a real opinion about them beatdeadhorse

Let's let this one go and beat the shit out of...my meat. I hang to the left. I like to hike, camp and I adore reach-arounds. Nudge nudge, wink wink 69

I'd rather base my opinions on my experiences with a person, and behavior, in stead of the words of others.

So, I don't feel the need to start disliking Meshell Ndegeocello, because of this article or posts over here. I read it, and will keep it in mind, but I will test it on validity before I belief it.

I know the journalist needs to keep his job, so he has to juicy up his article. And I can imagine that Prince his opinion did hurt her. But that does not make Prince, nor Meshell a bad person.

It just reflects how things go in this world. Musicians need to get known beyond their family and friends, in order to sell their products. People have limited time to double-check what media serves them, so, absentmindedly, they take in what is broadcasted to them. And the majority only focuses on information that is about dramatic feuds, sex, envy and simplifying politics and religions.

If the majority becomes selective about what information they take notice off, journalist can focus their articles on what really matters and musicians can make music, in stead of gossip.

99% of my posts are ironic. Maybe this post sides with the other 1%.

Lots and lots of people that worked for/with Prince for years have said he's a nice guy.

Lots of people here on the Org who have met him/worked for him/socialized with him have said he's a nice guy.

Meshell Ndegeocello poorly chose her words.

Here's a concert review i remember reading that shows she ain't so nice either..

To say that I was disappointed in the actions of neo-soul singerMeshell Ndegocello over the weekend during a performance in Atlanta would be a huge understatement. Over 500 people lined up in front of Sugarhill, a club venue at Atlanta's popular Underground to see the openly gay artist perform live, but what they were subjected too was an angry, disrespectful, and intoxicated Meshell.

I have to admit that I'm not a huge fan. I don't own any of her albums, but I was familiar with her music and enjoyed the few songs that were able to break into the mainstream during the late 90's. I've written in the past about how I was moved by her courage to record the controversial song Leviticus Faggot and it's impact on the lives of many young LGBT people.

But the ounce of respect I had for Meshell going into this concert was quickly diminished by the end of her 45 minute set.
She appeared on stage dressed in all black with a head wrap covering her locks. I didn't expect her to pull a Diana Ross and have 10 costume changes during her performance, but I also didn't expect her to look like the man on the corner with a mug that says "Got any spare change? ".

Five minutes into heavy instrumentals from her band and very few vocals from Meshell, the crowd gasps as we see Meshell passed out on the middle of the stage. Was she high? Or did the flash photography from the crowd cause her epilepsy to act up? The jury is still out on that one. But upon her return to the stage she threw water on the crowd, performed with her back to the audience at times, and left the stage twice provoking boos from her paying fans.

Me'shell was one of the artists I was looking forward to seeing live the most (she rarely comes to Europe). After a 10+ year wait, I was sorely disappointing when I saw her in Hamburg in November 2011 (Weather Tour): a very short setlist (only songs from Weather as far as I can remember), absolutely no interaction with the audience, no interaction within the band, it was simply pathetic, one of the less generous artists I've ever seen live. I can’t say what was going on on this very day, but she certainly didn’t come across as a nice person, more like a moody diva. (I've seen Prince in concert about 11 times over the last 24 years and even at his worst, he remains professionally generous.)

He called her a "house nigger" for making a record with Warner Brothers, and now he's on Warner Bros. What could the other side possibly be? Seems pretty straight forward.

This lacks context.

Let me bring some to the table.

When this happened, Prince and Warners were very much at war. Not too long before this, Warners were still releasing material that Prince had given them in order to fulfil his contract. Stuff like "The Vault : Old Friends For Sale".

So, Meshell comes to Prince asking him to feature on a song she's doing that'll be released on Warners? Of course he's gonna laugh in her face and tell her what he really thinks.

But Meshell bringing that up now is irrelevant. Prince WON the battle with Warners. He got his masters back and signed again with them on HIS terms. Warners, right now, are spending a great deal of money promoting Art Official Age. They're releasing Plectrum Electrum, a decidely uncommercial record. And Prince still owns the rights to BOTH these records.

I'm not sure what she was insinuating with that tweet, but if her point was that he's being hypocritical, then like I said, it completely lacks context.

Aside to which - Prince was nothing but nice when I met him - seems others will say the same. I think it's highly judgemental to make blanket statements like "he's not a nice person".

Not saying this or that about prince or anyone, but you're saying that you met him and he was "nice" or cordial or whatever...is that really relevant? I think a relationship that goes beyond just "meeting" gives you a much clearer picture of the person you're dealing with. I met Prince, and he was nice, which was expected. But given what I've heard and read, I don't think I would want to know much more than what I saw in those few minutes of idle chat.

I disagree. The article is actually very good as far as offering insight into Meshell as an artist, which is what the vast majority of the article focuses on.

What she said about Prince is not really gossip since she's relaying what she experienced first hand.

Personally I never cared for her even before I knew that she had worked with Prince.

She has always been really nice when I have seen her. I loved her Prince covers tour. Here is Lady Cab Driver...

That show was here in Detroit in July 2012. It started raining so she let people come up onstage. My daughter and I are on the left side of the screen up against the wall. I have the dreadlocs and a black shirt on and my then 7 year old daughter is standing in front of me. Great rendition! [Edited 9/10/14 4:51am]

that's awesome! I have been following her for years and love her.........some of her shows have blown me away - in fact, most of them, and she always seems pretty nice to me.........for the record, I have met Prince too and he was nice to me..........just posted this article for the Meshell fans - funny how one comment can get so many views and from the looks of things, people have felt free to attack her - lol - wtf? some people just can't take negative comments about Prince

Well, it depends on your view of Prince "Winning." When remasters moved decent amounts of copies, and there was a lot of interest in it, yeah it would have been a win for Prince. From 1997 to 2005 it would have been pretty big. Prince does have some young fans, but his biggest fan base is over 35 and aging rapidly. People over 35 don't spend tons of money on music anymore. Us diehards do, but Purple Rain is going to be the only possible cash cow for Prince and Warners...and I'm skeptical about how many units they will move. I'm scared we may only get a few remasters, and they will give up. I can't tell you the last time somebody was asking me when the "Graffiti Bridge" remastered cd was coming out...why? It hasn't happened ONCE. I have fielded questions from friends who see me as a a big music source about U2 remasters, and they didn't even really sell all that well.

Yeah I dont think anyone would dispute that the sales of those albums will never see the movement they did previously, but its is pretty clear that WB gave Prince the terms he wanted (or at least enough of his terms that he felt like he was getting his due share) to reach a deal. Insofar as the two sides still have an opportunity to profit off of Prince's music and fan-base here on out I still think both sides will gain from the renewed relationship, but no longer in a master/slave type of profit-ratios. For that reason I think Meshell's tweet was just a slight bit misplaced.

But personally I think its perfectly rational for people to hold on to resentment from situations like this, because no one likes to be called out like that.. and if you do it it should be done delicately.. and its likely he just wasn't delicate in his delivery.

Change it one more time..

It really suprises me when people don't realise Prince is generally a cunt.

I've met him plenty of times over the years, and he is lovely on the surface nearly all of the time, but I had one arguement with him over bootlegs in 87, and he turned into the devil.

I guess the people that work directly with him get that x 10.

He was nice as pie when I met him too....that doesn't necessarily invalidate Meshell's experience with him. I suspect that they were okay at one time, which is why she felt she could ask him to play on her record. She has so much respect and admiration for him that his rebuff must have felt like a bucket of cold water. Why this is still such an issue for her all these years later is rather odd.

When I first heard about his comment a few months ago I doubted that he directly said "you are a house n----". I still doubt it but he may have said words to that effect indirectly.

All of us have days when we're not that nice though. shrug
