Thy without a sin, cast the first stone.

Why does she feel the need to throw stones at him?

That's not very classy.

The way collegues love to bully Justin Bieber, is disgraceful. The kid never did anything to them personally, did he? So, why make it a national sport to bully one (very young) artist?

She should talk about herself, not badmouthing others.

99% of my posts are ironic. Maybe this post sides with the other 1%.

I think Prince has a problem with *strong* women who are opininated and can think for themselves lol With his own female proteges, there hasn't been too many issues because, for the most part, they just sit back and let him control everything. They don't challenge him,or question him.Sinead O' Connor and Meshell Ndegeocello don't appear to be weak women at all, lol. It's easy to see why he had problems with them.

how do you knbow that they dont ?, challenge etc..you dont

Historically, there were house slaves and field slaves, and that mentality persists to this very day in black culture. Prince see's himself as a field "n"i.e, militant, not trusting of the powers that be, wary of their motives, an independent thinker, fights to put himself in a position of strength, never likes being in position of weakness, dependance. A house "n"on the other hand, is thankful and greatful for every little crum that is swept of the table, obedient to the powers that be, passive, will do and say all of the right things in hopes that the powers that be will continue to feed them. Malcolm X explained this more than 50 years ago.

if prince didn't have a side to him that wasn't unpleasant..we wouldn't be here talking about him..the only reason he went from being a little black guy from the middle of nowhere (in music terms) and living in a friends basement to the biggest music star on the planet was because he was single minded and driven . he made decisions along the way that didnt endure him to a lot of people along the way . firing managers..firing other employees...plenty of former associates have spoken of his dark side so this is no real surprise. he is a control freak and likes everything his own way......thats not to say he doesn't have his good side as well..but he doesn't mess about and that is why he got where he is today.

Its funny how we all made fun of Michael for pretty much the same and always thought "our guy" was so superior but in the end Prince and MJ are more alike than Prince is to the more grounded artist of his generation.

I will reserve judgement until I hear both sides of the story

He called her a "house nigger" for making a record with Warner Brothers, and now he's on Warner Bros. What could the other side possibly be? Seems pretty straight forward.

Shame--this is a really good interview with a brilliant artist, but the magazine, wanting to sell ads, creates a sensational title that relates to a tenth of the article. I just hope most people who read the article get more from the rest of the article.

*

Now, as it relates to his statement, Prince expressed his notion, idea, or position on Meshell working with Warner Bros only after she contacted him. Unless he's done anything else to her, I don't know how that one statement to her qualifies as him not being a nice person. I'm sure we can all connect this one statement to other things he's done, but being identified as not being a nice person because he simply voiced his opinion about something she was doing is stretching it a bit. Of course, now that Prince has a new deal with Warner Bros. some can call him a hypocrite, and some can defend him by stating that he's getting to keep his masters and that the deal he now has with Warner Bros is more of a distribution deal. (Yet, whatever one's position is on Prince for calling her a house nigger, we all can agree that one must be careful how one labels others because one does not know the life experiences of others and how those life experiences have shaped that person's behavior or choices. Also, terms like sell-out, Uncle Tom, and house nigger are equally as subjective as they are objective, which means one is sliding on a slippery slop whenever one attempts to identify someone else with those terms. Prince should remember how he has been and continues to be called those names since Purple Rain for various choices he has made.) At any rate, I would be more bothered by his words to her if he had approached her unsolicited and said, "Hey, Meshell, you're a house nigger," but it seems to me that she asked him to play on her record, and he declined citing socio-political differences, such as "I don't want to work for people who work for the oppressor." We can disagree with his position, but him having that position and expressing it--only after being solicited by her--does not make him a "mean" or "bad" person. It simply means that he is forthcoming about his views and position. Yet, again, even I've spent too much time on this because there are more significant ideas in the article than Prince not being a nice person.

Meshell obviously knew that they would pick that statement out. She not stupid. prince opened up his Glam Slam club for her to per4rm. So that is far from him not being a mean person. Plus she turns around & does a WHOLE tour of strictly prince's material. Smh

Its obviously a publicity ploy she doing...

This lacks context.

Let me bring some to the table.

When this happened, Prince and Warners were very much at war. Not too long before this, Warners were still releasing material that Prince had given them in order to fulfil his contract. Stuff like "The Vault : Old Friends For Sale".

So, Meshell comes to Prince asking him to feature on a song she's doing that'll be released on Warners? Of course he's gonna laugh in her face and tell her what he really thinks.

But Meshell bringing that up now is irrelevant. Prince WON the battle with Warners. He got his masters back and signed again with them on HIS terms. Warners, right now, are spending a great deal of money promoting Art Official Age. They're releasing Plectrum Electrum, a decidely uncommercial record. And Prince still owns the rights to BOTH these records.

I'm not sure what she was insinuating with that tweet, but if her point was that he's being hypocritical, then like I said, it completely lacks context.

Aside to which - Prince was nothing but nice when I met him - seems others will say the same. I think it's highly judgemental to make blanket statements like "he's not a nice person".

prince is #Winning! He should be commended here for his accomplishment. He waited & got exactly what he wanted from Warners. Even if it took almost 20 years! He should be on CLOUD 9 about now.

Very true. Certain characteristics of personality that are not always publically valued (being defiant, highly persistent, highly self-confident (which could in some people be considered arrogance), willing to go against public opinion etc) can be double edge swords.. in the short term you may not be appreciated, but in the long term such things prevent you from settling for anything less than what you think you can get (as long as you have the talent, persistence and/or value to back up your defiance), it can also allow you to transform structures and systems that otherwise exist largely only to exploit you (e.g. the record industry he started in and helped transform). Many of the super successful share this characteristic.

Change it one more time..

I love meshell and have seen her live several times. But, in her last few albums (not counting the sweet Nina tribute) she has lost the songwriting craft. Her last brilliant album was Bitter.

I liked a track or two on the latest one, but it didnt pull me in the way many of her other albums have. Weather was ok.. but I find I didnt listen to it much, i liked Devil's Halo more... and the world has made me thr man of my dreams is one of my favorite albums by anyone. Their issues have been discussed here ad naseum though.. i thought this was a recent article.

---- What total bullshit !!! Prince is allowed to not like, disagree or speak to just like anyone else. Plenty of people have good things to say and plenty of people want to work with him. I am not even going to comment on Michelle crap music. She does not appear to have the lability to put together one decent tune and I am amazed at the praise she gets on this board for putting out one of the worst cd this year.

I'm a very big supported of Meshell, but her last really project was Man of my Dreams. After that project it has been 3 or albums of mostly misses for me. I still support her though. The last concert I saw her live at, President Obama crashed the set. He was sitting 2 rows over from me.

That show was here in Detroit in July 2012. It started raining so she let people come up onstage. My daughter and I are on the left side of the screen up against the wall. I have the dreadlocs and a black shirt on and my then 7 year old daughter is standing in front of me. Great rendition!

Here's a concert review i remember reading that shows she ain't so nice either..

To say that I was disappointed in the actions of neo-soul singerMeshell Ndegocello over the weekend during a performance in Atlanta would be a huge understatement. Over 500 people lined up in front of Sugarhill, a club venue at Atlanta's popular Underground to see the openly gay artist perform live, but what they were subjected too was an angry, disrespectful, and intoxicated Meshell.

I have to admit that I'm not a huge fan. I don't own any of her albums, but I was familiar with her music and enjoyed the few songs that were able to break into the mainstream during the late 90's. I've written in the past about how I was moved by her courage to record the controversial song Leviticus Faggot and it's impact on the lives of many young LGBT people.

But the ounce of respect I had for Meshell going into this concert was quickly diminished by the end of her 45 minute set.
She appeared on stage dressed in all black with a head wrap covering her locks. I didn't expect her to pull a Diana Ross and have 10 costume changes during her performance, but I also didn't expect her to look like the man on the corner with a mug that says "Got any spare change? ".

Five minutes into heavy instrumentals from her band and very few vocals from Meshell, the crowd gasps as we see Meshell passed out on the middle of the stage. Was she high? Or did the flash photography from the crowd cause her epilepsy to act up? The jury is still out on that one. But upon her return to the stage she threw water on the crowd, performed with her back to the audience at times, and left the stage twice provoking boos from her paying fans.
