Plectrum Electrum on USB?

It appears that Prince's new Pectrum Electrum album may be released on USB according to their hints on Twitter. While a great marketing tactic, we talk about some major challenges with that.

Good article...

I think P should leave it to his fans how they purchase his music...

Release it on vinyl, mp3, CD, USB or anything else...also with deluxe versions:)

People would buy what they prefer...

In theory, that would be ideal for the fan. However, that is alot of manufacturing for something that he has NO IDEA how much he's going to sell.

Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

To complicate matters: the title of the album is not on the USB stick. So you need the complete graphic to get all the information. Is it therefore the image of a tongue-in-cheeck proper album. It would be really cool if this was the cover of a vinyl-only release biggrin

The only interesting thing is that it sounds a bit fresh and surprising, even though prince isn't the first artist to do that (just googled it and it's been done by several acts), but in the end it's a bit silly to sale an OBJECT that needs to be plugged into a computer, tablet or phone to be played instead of a simple download. I mean CD and vinyl purists won't see this as favorably as a proper physical release and digital music users will just download it in the end, so IDK. But it's a funny idea so why not...

He's been teasing this album for more than a year and come up with a million different reasons for not releasing it. The best audio quality in the world won't make the songs any better, P.

Hmmm... so for me to play it, I would insert the USB drive into my PC that is my dedicated PLEX server, then listen through my traditional stereo system via my ROKU, using my ROKU-based PLEX app.

Ha!

The ROKU device attaches to your TV and to your audio. You can get hundreds of free channels for a ROKU. It is also wireless, so you can stream stuff from your PC to the ROKU. I chose PLEX, which a server application that is installed on my PC... this manages all of my audio and video files. The ROKU has a PLEX channel (which is an app written for ROKU). I go to that channel, and see all of my audio and video files, and play whatever.

I also use the ROKU for movies, TV, etc. Mostly for Netflix.

Roku also has an app for Amazon Cloud player, which is cool because it plays whatever collection you've loaded into the player. I've had Roku for the past 5 years or so, and it's GREAT! Stream Netlix and Hulu, HBOGo, etc. Tons of music apps like Pandora and iHeartRadio as well (I use it to stream "Orange Park Radio" from the TuneIn Radio app, but don't tell anyone). It really is an awesome piece of technology, and very inexpensive to boot...

blahblah as usual Prince is all talk. Just release it already. When Doves Cry still sounds like a great song when played as an mp3 so don't start blaming the listener if your songs aren't up to scratch. (for the record, I like most of his recent stuff)

Taking my exact comment I left on the Prince FB Page:

"If the music itself is lackluster, I don't care how great the sound quality is. HOPEFULLY the album is worth such a way of distribution. Because if it's not, it's a waste of time, space [on my HDD], & technology. I want the sound quality to match the music & BOTH be great. Not just one, or the other."

even andy allo's superconductor had a limited edition USB release

in a nice package a while ago.

.

but i don't want to have to order a physical product from prince at

this stage. i've done that before and delivery took ages.

.

it's no fun when everyone on here already has an album and you

are still waiting for the mailman day after day.

.

now, the kind of package that MOST artists, especially indi ones

are selling: mp3, cd and direct mp3 download, vinyl + mp3 or a

deluxe package with a usb and extra stuff, now that woud be just

fine.

.

but i guess a usb with a direct MP3 download link would kind of be

totally contra to what this was conceived for (for Pleccy Leccy).

this will be a totally ridiculous proposal if Prince doesn't fix the AWFUL mastering some of his recent songs have had. seriously. they've been brickwalled all to hell, and increasing the resolution of the format isn't going to fix how the music has been mastered. the problem with the audio quality is coming from the studio, not the format. hopefully the focus on audio quality is more than superficial..

It's amazing that we have to talk about the poor mixing & mastering of an artist that has been killing it for decades. lol There are kids making beats on laptops that know how to master better than Prince has been doing it, in the last decade. disbelief lol Shit is pathetic.

At the end of the day he can release a USB, but 98% of people wont have a sound system that a lossless format would be able to make proper use of. Music is only as good as the system its played on at the end of the day. Prince could say yeah its Lossless the best sounding music you could ever hear, but a dude sat on the train with it on his earphones wont be arsed it will still sound the same as a 320 mp3 would. To take full advantage of it you would need studio quality monitors which are not cheap.

.

Just give me a Vinyl and I'll be like a pig in shit, nothing better than having a physical copy of music.
