Yeah I think a whole seperate disc/album series on Vault material will happen. The goodies that we'll (possbly) get on the reissues will be directly associated with those albums, like demos and extended cuts and radio edits or B-sides or whtaever

I really just posted to see if it would let me. And at first it did some sort of weird jumping down the screen--I thought it had somehow cancelled the response on its own.

People are forgetting one of the reasons Prince fell out with WB was because they kept holding him back on how quickly he wanted to release his music. Now if they want to release reissues and remasters of albums, they are not going to suddenly start doing it every 6 months. They will still want the maximum return for each release and will want to do it AT THE MOST once a year. That means for just his 80s albums, it will take 10 years.

.

Dont forget too that Prince will also want to release new albums in that time. I cant see WB wanting to release a remastered album AND a new Prince album together (or even within 6 months of each other) for fear of canibalising sales of each. So when does Prince release new music and when does he release a remaster?

.

WB are probably more interested in the remasters than the new music. They know the new stuff aint going to sell as well as the old stuff. And it is here that I see the next falling out:

.

PRINCE: I have a new double album I want to release.

WB: Cant it wait? We have just finished pressing the Sign o' the Times remaster for release imminently. And we have Lovesexy to rerelease in a years time.

PRINCE: Aw come on man! This is my Magnus Opus Masterpeice!

WB: Sorry dude, your contract states....

PRINCE: Screw the contract! This is a new Prince album!

WB: Ok, how about this. We release the SOTT remaster now and then you can release your new album in 6 months time once the rush dies down a bit.

PRINCE: Hmmm..... ok, that might work. I aint happy about it, but it does give me time to change direction 3 or 4 times and make it an even bigger masterpeice.

WB: But you will have to tour now with an SOTT heavy set to promote the remaster too. No new stuff at all! You MUST promote the remasters by playing the hits on tour endlessly.

PRINCE: Whatever.

WB: Oh, and please can you make your new double album a single disc instead? We feel that it would make a better album if it was shorter and we already have a tripple SOTT album out there.

PRINCE: Fuck this shit! What am I? A fucking slave?

WB: Err... yes.

.

And history repeats itself...

.

Anyway, there really is only mention of the PR remaster. I think we are all jumping the gun to suggest all of his WB albums will get a rerelease. Doing that would take as long as his entire WB career lasted. And that doesnt include any new stuff being released.

I think most of the albums we get will have minimal additions. That is the Bs and Es/Rs.

I predict 1 or 2 MORE will get the big ta-do that PR is getting (1999 and SOTT).

And I think it will just be FY- prince (-Batman)

Will even have a chance of being reissued by WB

I don't actually see this as the scenario. First, we've seen how they put out other big catalogs--the Costello catalog was done by Rhino (a possible place for them to do this) pretty quickly--17 albums in 4 years. Elvis kept up his normal release schedule. You're argument is based on what I think is a mistaken notion: that Warner will want to delay releases in order to increase sales. Maybe they won't want to dump them as they did with Costello, three albums at a time, but delaying won't increase sales significantly. At least, not with any deluxe versions--those will sell what they sell pretty quickly; a single disc basic remaster would continue to sell (I suspect such a no-frills version will replace the currently available versions). There isn't going to be single after single or a series of videos or a bunch of TV appearances or any of that, or a tour, which is what drags out the cycle for new releases (something like that might happen in connection with Purple Rain, but none of the other albums could really bear that--they weren't that big). That's not how they do it with other people with significant back catalogs; it's not how they'll do it with Prince, even if he were agreeable.

I really do not want any live versions on these. They never sound as good as when you were there and it just sounds wrong on a cd with studio stuff.

I want all old vault stuff polished up. I want, 'moonbeam levels' 'empty room' 'others here with us etc. All buffed up.

I would like to see him release the vault as a series like 79-82 83-85 86-88 - 89-92 etc So it can be jammed back full of material.

I like your pairings! Here are others I would do: Batman/Graffiti Bridge, Diamonds & Pearls/Love Symbol Album, Come/Gold Experience, Chaos & Disorder/

yes, those are really the best pairings for those albums nod

but i'm not sure we'll ever get a Batman reissue, simply because of

licensing with the samples from the movie and all. but who knows.

The samples aren't a big issue, movie samples are being used in songs all the time, it's like a song sample. More problematic may be the use of the Batman name and logo, cover art and all, but I'm sure this can easily be sorted out: if P handles it with WB Records, DC and WB film wins some royalties, WB records and P get the rest of the money, I really don't c why it'd be so complicated.

One a year, you have to be kidding? Interest in Prince fades with each passing year, so the window of financial opportunity keeps getting smaller. Not to mention if we are getting one a year a good chunk of us will be dead before we get to the end of them. Not a great idea at all.

It's the 25th anniversary of Batman (the movie & the soundtrack) and the 75th anniversary of the character. WB has a ton of Batman related releases coming out this year to celebrate which I believe includes a 25th anniversary release of the movie. Why not take the opportunity to do a 25th special edition of the soundtrack? The timing is perfect with Prince being back with WB, and the odds are, if they don't do it this year, they'll never do it... wink

Good idea, because in this case his new material wouldn't pale that much in comparison.

It's true though, people die all the time. I'm not wishing any of us dead but it's a reality. With 1 a year we'd be looking at 15 years of releases from now, it's not crazy to think some of us will be dead by then. I'd be 60 then and I'm sure I'm not the oldest one here, for sure some of us will be dead and gone.

If I'm still alive and kicking, maybe the excitement for the remaster of The Vault: Old Friends For sale in 2029 will be too much and finish me off. Seriously, think about the idea of 1 a year in that respect, 2029 for The Vault, 2025 for The Gold Experience. What sort of market will exist for those titles at that time? Hell, what is the realistic market for those remasters at this time? One a year is a completely ridiculous proposition.

And what's this god thing you speak of? There's the politics and religion forum for that nonsense.

Purple Rain is THE cash cow for both Prince and WB. All the initial effort will be on this and they will see how it sells.

I predict that all the other WB albums will eventually be remastered and released as deluxe editions (certainly up to and including Lovesexy) and that they will be a grouped release like suggested earlier on the thread (ie 2 or 3 at a time) BUT after having left ample breathing space for both PR deluxe and the new Prince album.

I would not be surprised if this contract (having been in negotiation for at least a year) is not pretty watertight to ensure maximum opportunity to properly exploit the back catalogue (likely for the last time due to the diminishing interest in Prince). I would also not be surprised if the contract ensures that Prince only gets the masters AFTER the remaster has been completed and is in WB hands so they can go ahead and press the deluxe editions.

This really is a way for Prince to ensure his retirement fund and for WB to generate some last revenue from someone who was once one of their top acts.

I hope, really hope, that we fans get all of that AND get a series of Vault releases too!

One more suggestion for the remaster/remaster series: offer (maybe for a premium or a mail-in offer) a deluxe printed magazine-sized expanded version of the liner notes with full color images, interviews, articles, etc. .

.

Very similar to the Emancipation book, which until that point I had not seen done before.
