We would love to know what you think, as well as what you want to see going forward.

.

Nice. A friend just caught my attention with this. I'd love to participate. Prince was a significant influence for me, or rather my music. I could possibly even provide some Princely music for this...

LOL. I can totally see how you would appreciate 90 mins of fan babble.

I can see how you are deluded into thinking that I care about what you think. After all in your own words we are a bunch of nobodies. You need to get the fuck over yourself.

More babble.

I'm starting to rethink this. Perhaps a doc on the insanity of Prince fans might work. It might be fun to watch a bunch of 'characters' express their devotion towards someone they've never met (in a train-wreck kinda way, of course).

Complete with tambourines and symbol tattoos.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Ummm- I am aware of that. The whole point is Prince has plenty of fans which Bart (who would not know if he had a hole in his head) Van Hemelen does not seem to think that an audience exsist for this doc.

I am saying Prince has loads of fans and I think putting the spotlight on them will make those fans interested in the doc.

Puzzled as to way this had to be spelled out on a fan message board that has been around for almost 20 years.

I think Prince fans are interested in Prince - not necessarily in other Prince fans.

I think Prince fans can be an interesting angle for a documentary.

However, the trailer does not show any angle. Random people commenting about the org, is not fascinating at all. Especially not for people who don't know the org (99,99% of the world population).

I don't see why Ben Umbreit and his circle of Prince fans are relevant for a broad audiance. Why would anybody want to go to the theater and watch their babble?

(Maybe these people have interesting stories or organised revolutionary meetings, but the trailer did not show that)

There does not seem to be a concrete focus on one subject. It's a chaotic edited, random talks of orgers.

I think there can be made very good documentaries about several aspects of Prince fans.

I fear that if this one is going to represent Prince fans, nobody will ever get the chance to make a documentary on this topic again. And that would be a shame.

Sorry Oliver, I know you really want this project to happen. I think your story line and focus is way too shallow and thin at this point. Don't waste your energy and good intentions if it's not going to be a more interesting and relevant piece.

You seem to not have prepared the basics of the documentary. Do your homework about the legal practicalities yet. A documentary about Prince fans without Prince music does not seem attractive. And if your plan lacks quality, Prince will not aprove the use of his work.

I've checked into this, and we should all support it. I don't normally do KickStarter, but this is worth it. For those unawawre, you can donate any amount starting at one dollar.

.

Seeing as how Prince has the most diverse fan base of any artist in history, this would be not only fantastic for us, but also for others who wonder why we're so dedicated.

.

Although you see the preview, it hasn't been completed, and in order for it to be completed, it requires backing. Jus' do it!

Yes, the diversity of the fans and how Prince music might have built bridges is a good topic.

Or the org itself might be a valid topic.

But there is more needed than just a vague idea.

I have 10 good ideas a day. IMO. However, that's not a reason to ask people to spend money on me. I'm just not convinced about the quality at the moment.

I see they got the idea to do this from "Affair of the Heart" a fan created DOC that actually won a ton of awards at festivals last year came out and sold well on DVD, it was about fans of Rick Springfield on his tours currently and traces them through their travels to see him play, sometimes over 100 times a year. Difference is that Rick when approached gave the OK and totally allowed them in, on his tours soundchecks and was in it too. PRINCE will never be in it or allow things to be used in it i think we ALL know that he would never allow an inch of his "image" in a film.

nod The Rick Springfield docu was the first thing I thought of when I read about this.

It was a huge success and it was all fans, a bunch of them made it, contacted each other and then word of mouth and Rick was in it doing alot, letting them film shows, tours, vacations, interviews with him. Prince Will NEVER do this, he will never let peeps in his world like that, and forget about using his image like he said, cease and desist orders will be drawn up at first mention of his music. But in a perfect world he would do something like this, and gain the exposure back that people want him to have, this is where you get it.

Sounds good to me as well. Even though we love his music because he's a genius. I think I can safely say for the most part his fans get along. I remember being at Paisley celebration 2002 and each night we would line up outside along the fence and one afternoon we were lined up early and it was scorching hot some of his fans were passing out free cold water bottles smile Which was cool because early an ambulance was called for someone who had gotten overheated.

I agree with dJJ. With any proposal, you still need a focus, and I don't know if showing the variety of Prince fans is a specific enough angle to distinguish this documentary from similar ones. I mean, what makes Prince fans and what they do different from any other musician's fans, especially when it comes to posting on online boards, traveling for concerts/seeing multiple concerts, throwing themed parities, etc., as the preview shows? Just because of their different backgrounds?

To me, what's special about the Prince fan community is the group of diehard fans who document every performance and recording, share articles and photos, keep podcasts and websites running all for free, all on their own time and at their own expense, all for the benefit of other fans (present and future) in the absence of an official platform and, more importantly, often in spite of Prince. There is very little personal pay off and the high caliber of many of these projects is proof of what we all believe and feel about Prince's music--that it's worth archiving and respecting for posterity. It's beyond fan-girling, being inspired to get a tattoo/name your child something Prince-related, or geeking out at the minutiae of Prince history because it's bigger than each of our own personal connections with the music... Too bad a lot of these people operate anonymously or behind the scenes, and there's the ever-present threat of a lawsuit... Tainted love! lol

Still, I'll keep an open mind about the documentary and would love to hear more about it so please keep us posted. smile

Actually, this is a really good point. I don't know of any fan group which lovingly documents the doings a man that actively gets in their way of doing so. When the time comes for posterity - and that time always comes - he'll regret not having appreciated their efforts.

...I think it would be fascinating to know more about why someone who proclaims himself not to be a fan spends so much time devoted to "debunking" Prince. I mean, there's loads of acts who I like/ love some of their stuff but I don't particularly appreciate what they're doing now but I don't feel the need to haunt fan forums just to criticise them and, more interestingly for me, others who do still like that particular artist.
I'd also love to know if he's as rude to people in real life as he is on here (I suspect not!) and if he appreciates the irony of constantly calling out Prince for mis-treating people!!!
Even without Bart, I think the project has potential - whether this will be realised in the execution I don't know but I'm happy to throw a couple of dollars their way.

Hey all, thanks for all of your ideas. They are helping us shape our vision for this project. We truly want this to be a purple family affair. I also wanted to share a letter our director, Olivier, just posted on our facebook group "The Purple Circle" as well as on Kickstarter.

Hello everyone,

Thank you for your help so far. I would like to encourage all of you to try to seek out to others in order to get this project funded. Fundraising works like a political campaign: the more we reach out, the more momentum we get, and the more likely big investors will want to help. So, please promote this Kickstarter link.

Making a documentary is very different from a narrative film. In narrative films, the story is written before the filming starts. When making a documentary, the story is written after the filming. In narrative films, you plan what happens next in the story because you have actors that will play it out to perfection. But in documentary filmmaking, you're dealing with reality and humans that follow their own life story. The key is for us to discover the most interesting story to tell amongst the fans, and this will take patience and observation. We can make this happen once the funds are rolling. We have the best team for this job with technical gurus and musical fanatics, this documentary can only succeed.

The purple circle funds will help us pay for the following elements:

- Technical equipment (camera, batteries, sound, tripod, software, hard drives) - Transportation (plane, car rental) - Hotel & food during production - Post-production costs (editing, sound editing, sound mixing, graphic design, original musical composition & promotion)

Once Purple Circle is launched, we will film all over the nation, spending countless hours filming the fans in their environment, living their fantastic or dramatic life. If the budget allows it, and that's if the funds are tripled, we will take the documentary overseas by flying and filming international to follow the funkiest, most eccentric and fascinating individuals.

No matter what, once the funds are in, the making of this project will result into a broadcast quality full feature length documentary.

And that's thanks to you!

Love from the Purple team.

I agree with you that a documentary enfolds along the way. Still, I think it's pivotal to get a focus. Maybe that focus will slowly develop.

Are you coming to the Org invasion in Amsterdam? Or the one in N.O.?

I think if you narrow the fans down to orgers, you have already made your first decision toward a more narrow focus!

Yep this place is an interesting fan site. Perfect fit for someone like Prince lol .

And let's not forget we have had some associate artists as org members. The one that comes to mind and most likely particpate is Robin Power. Get her! She would be awesome to include.

Alan Leeds is also an org memeber and so is the manager for F-Deluxe

I think the org as a small international society is interesting.

The fights, the loves, the fun, the friendships, the support, the political disputes, the religious discussions, the stupid threads that turn out legendary.

I think the org is interesting as an entity in itself.

So, Ben is the first person to interview about all the ins and outs.

I think in between the complicated relationship between P and fans will get mentioned.

And that is what I mean with focus;

do you want it to be about the decades of sadomasochistic relationship between P and fans?

About how the Ben and others build the org, as a response to P his way of management.

Or about how the org became a society on itself, inhabited by a very diverse, international purple crowd?

Or do you want it to be like the Springsteen documentary? Fans telling their memories of concerts?

Or do you want to focus on specific topics that have always been "hot" on the org?

If you don't focus, you will get hours and days of footage and you will get lost in the editing proces.

Do you have somebody managing the whole project? Somebody who does the admin and finances? Somebody who does the practicalities and production?

What is what you want to show the world?

And what do you think would be interesting for people to watch? You know. non orgers?

Do you have a sufficient estimate of the costs? Or will you run out of money half way and are forced to finish it with subpar footage?

What do you find interesting and why is that interesting for the rest of the world to watch?

Why would orgers want to cooperate with you? What goal does that serve? Or are you happy with a few orgers who want to see their face on tv and let them claim their 15 minutes of fame?

I really think you have to decide in advance and know what angle you want to focus on.

I'm not being negative here, I just think that the preparation is 75% of the work and succes. So, if you are really serious about this, I hope you will start to write a serious pitch.

I've never made a documentary, but I'm sure there are plenty of models on the internet to give your pitch a structure. And force you to be concrete and make decisions for the focus of this project.

Hey, if you get it financed, you can hire me for help wink)

I think fans will find it interesting, the non fans who think Prince has done anything for the last 20 years as he hasn't had any 'Hits' will not be interested, that makes it a niche market. I think the best approach would be to make it funny, the idiosyncrasies of Prince and his life/attitude, especially towards his fans, it could become a documentary about trying to make a documentary about someone who doen't want to take part/have it made, which could be amusing.

I saw the Kevin Smith tour where he talked about being at Paisley Park and trying to deal with Prince and his people, that was far more interesting/entertaining than any Prince 'Documentary'.

Or it could go down the funny side of being a Prince fan, like find Prince's No.1 fan, abit like the when Alan Partridge met his No.1 fan...... classic stuff.
