Both of these songs are album-worthy.They actually don't sound like B-side material,to me.

How can it be that "La la la he he hee" gets that much love!? There's so much better b-side material available. What do you want to tell me next? "Poom Poom" is your all time favourite Prince song?

I guess for me itsba toss up between shockadelica...its funky, fun, danceable, funny, sexy, perverse....its like all of the above... She'll make ya beg. ....and How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore. Great songwriting totally unconventional for the time period. Piano...check. bass drum...check. Xpress record and....GO. .....and United States of Division. Really...it doesn't get much better than this..... falloff falloff lol lol ...aw hell I can't maintain....this song is as terrible as shockadelica is good. A true low point of a very good musicology period.
Ouch! I thought USoD was one of the best songs of the era. Sadly, I haven't listened to it in years because the only copy I have is on an old laptop.

noooo bro!!!! USoD is TURRRIBLE!!!!! Not as bad as Animal Kingdom or nothin....but turrible nontheless.

Stupid post. The only part I can take seriously is where you say some people were turned off. That I can believe, except it would've been a lot more than some. Otherwise you're engaging in the same dishonest strategy as rudeboynpg, which is to imply that the album's success was somehow connected to the assless pants. This is stupid beyond words. Repeat after me, it. was. the. songs, not a three second glimpse of Prince's ass. You are obviously too much of a fan to look objectively at it, but that performance didn't impress people then and it still doesn't impress people now. It wasn't that good. And no, everyone was not talking about the assless pants. He did it, people were embarrassed. They moved on. If you were known as a Prince fan then people may have mentioned it to you, but in general, it was politely glossed over.

eek Why are your panties so twisted about this?!? confused

I clearly an NOT implying that the album's success was due to assless pants.

In my opinion the album was successful for a couple of reasons: 5 solid single releases that were all top drawer material and excellent exposure and promotion. The second one has a lot to do with it and a lot of the credit probably goes to, whatsisname, the guy who had worked for MJ.

wink

What I am implying about the assless pants is just this: EVERYBODY noticed. EVERYBODY was talking about. Some were laughing at it. Some were laughing with it. And, yes, some, like you, were cringing.

The only reason I commented on this at all is that you were claiming nobody noticed. I refuted that ridiculous position. I continue to refute your current statement "in general, it was politely glossed over." Howgwash. It. was. not. glossed. over. Far f'ing from it.

People talked about it just like they would later talk about Janet's "wardrobe malfunction" or Miley's twerking. Your embarassment does not change that and a lack of embarassment does not make the rest of us "gay". Homophobe much?

Dude, I made it perfectly clear in that post that I was talking about my peer group. You CHOSE to misunderstand just like you've been doing throughout this conversation.

And the dishonesty continues with your seemingly straightforward statement that the majority of adults enjoy sexual entertainment. That statement is dishonest because enjoying sexual entertainment does not mean you enjoy the sight of a man's ass sticking out of his pants. You're implying it does. These are devious little games you're playing. If the majority of people liked seeing bare male asses then others would've followed Prince's lead, but they haven't because it makes most peoples' stomach turn. If you don't realize that then you seriously need to turn off the computer and go and talk to some real human beings.

You made it perfectly clear that your peer group were kids on a schoolyard. My nieces and nephew still watched the Nickoldeon Kids Choice Awards at 15. 15 year olds are kids. It was a wider age range (with people older than 15 year olds) that made Diamonds and Pearls a hit album.

I said the majority of adults enjoy sexual entertainment. And you are (delibrately?) misunderstanding. Please don't put words into my mouth when you attempt to criticize and insult me. You seem to be struggling -- and without great success -- to bend my words to fit some kind of agenda of your own. I suggest you make it easier on yourself, and just take what I say as what I say. I didn't say the majority of adults enjoyed and were sexually aroused at seeing Prince's bare butt, nor was I attempting to imply that. I was refering to the MTV Video Music Awards stage performance of the song Gett Off, and which consisted of more than just Prince's bare butt. There were also scantily clad women in thongs on display in the MTV performance as well, and men, and concrete pillars, and flames. It was a Caligula inspired spectacle. The sight of a man's ass does not make most peoples stomach turn. Hetrosexual women and homosexual men are sexually aroused by the sight of a man's ass that they are attracted to. I'm hetrosexual and the sight of Prince's bare butt wasn't arousing to me but wasn't stomach turning to me, either. I'm not squeamish and offended by the sight of the human body. In fact, I'd taken figure drawing class in community collage drawing nude males and females.

[Edited 1/6/14 13:14pm]

God, your tap-dancing never ends does it? You and I were talking specifically about Prince's ass-flash in that performance, not the other people on the stage. So if that's what you were referring to when you said "most people like sexual entertainment" then obviously you were changing the subject. But you did it in an underhand way. I busted you on it. The RELEVANT point is that most people do not like to see mens' asses exposed in that way.

And by the way, most heterosexual women are not aroused by men in assless pants. Have you ever spoken to a woman (who wasn't a Prince fanatic) about this? If you had you'd know this. Once again you're simply not being honest. Go and speak to a random female about this. You'll soon be brought back to reality.

Oh, one more example of your dishonesty is your lame attempt to lump 15-year-olds and pre-pubescent children together as if they were one and the same. They are not and you are being very sneaky by pretending they are. 15-year-olds are adolescents. There's a world of difference between a 15-year-old and a pre-pubescent child. You know this.

Maybe I wasn't being clear enough when I said most people didn't notice. Probably most people did notice, they just decided to say nothing about it. You are living in cloud-cuckoo land when you say it was discussed just like Janet Jackson's "wardrobe malfunction" or Miley Cyrus' twerking. Please show me the headlines, the editorials, the extended radio discussions and polls taken about the hot-button issue of Prince's bare ass. You can't do that because there simply was no such response. You should admit that. But most likely you'll follow the lead of your buddy rudeboynpg and just lie.

I'm sure that as the one serious Prince fan in your school at the time, people did ask you about it, but were they talking about it at length with anyone else? Was it discussed any more than dozens of other performances on the MTV Awards over the years? If you think about that you'll probably find that your recollection of a huge controversy is more a product of your fan-mind than an actual reality.

I'll stop with this list, "Top 10 MTV VMA Shocking Performances". Prince is #8 (Miley's #1!!):

There are more. If you need to read them, Google is your friend. Or, you could read ANY of the Prince bios that cover 1991. Whatever. Everybody noticed and everybody was talking about it. Some were laughing, some were cringing. Why are you so invested in pretending this isn't true?

Now, can we do as langebleu requested and focus on the thread question? Or, do we need to start a new thread on Prince's assless pants so you can continue insisting that nobody noticed?

i'm starting to think i should revisit la la la he he he 12 inch .. i used to hate scarlet pussy until i heard the 12 inch .. same with girl .. until i get my ears on that again tho .. it is a bit Barny the purple dinosaurish .. that was my initial turn off

probably the biggest issue with prince is that he saves his best stuff for b sides and outtakes .. he seems to be eternally reaching for that rnb pop rap lite christain jazz lite funk hit .. when he just goes nuts .. like on god .. it's really cool .. rarely do these moments make the record .. had u did .. that was cool .. but everything comercial seems so tame .. even tho prince fans think otherwise .. perhaps why people love the revolution years is because for some reason he was a bit more adventurous even on his official records .. once he ditched wb he got super boring .. and a bit before he ditched wb .. but again .. he was lookin for that rap money instead of being weird

best b side has to be 17 days or how come u dont call me or she's always in my hair

all three could have sold an extra million or 2 if included on the records .. all three could have been lead singles and hits ..

what is weird about prince is how he ruins some of his tunes live ..

i have only heard 'how come u don't call me' once live when it didn't suck .. he turns it into these ragtime romps .. same way he did to lets pretend we're married and something in the water

thankfully he is giving something in the water proper treatment these days .. but it wasn't long ago that he was butchering that song in a piano medley

someday prince needs to do a b side tour .. only b sides played .. in their true form of course .. none of this renato muzak butchering or ragtime piano version or one word chant on a one chord groove that sounds nothing like the original song .. the real deal

will the real prince please stand up and return to life as prince once said prince is dead .. aint that the truth

I think Bside in the 1980s meant they didn't fit directly with the album vision. Had nothing to do with quality. Outside of 17 Days, and maybe God(vocal) all the other could easily fit on the era's album.

I just wish we had 1 more for Parade SOTT & Lovesexy

I did have Old Friends 4 Sale back in late 85 or early 86 on a popular radio station where I lived then, they played it all the time, and I was expecting it when Parade was released. I think I had it on every Maxwell (gold silver) tape I could manage

Wow, your ignorance and condescending bullshit never ends. Don't try to tell me what I was talking about and call me dishonest and claim to known what everyone thinks when you obviously have no clue and reject anything that don't fit your closed-minded bias in your desperate attempts to win the argument. Drop it and get back on the topic of Prince's best B-side.

Goodnight, sweet Prince.
