Groovy Potential: A Case in Point

Ok, I searched and saw the old thread from when the song was just posted but there wasn't a "reply" option. So today GP comes up randomly on my computer and MAN, i was underwhelmed at FIRST listen, but now, I hear the work put into this track. It struck me this time as a "case in point" for P and his fans a few reasons.

#1) How diverse and polarizing one song can be amongst his insatiable fan base. A "problem" of his own creation because he's so dag talented.

#2) The last 40 or so seconds - While lots of ppl said this was the "best part" of the song, it shows how effortlessly he can GO THERE and give you "high quality funk by numbers" (this sounds oxymoronic i know, but this is on a diff. level than the NPS funk by numbers)

#3) The last 40 or so seconds - Are SO good it can make you miss, and not appreciate the more challenging construct of the rest of the song

#4) "Tired" or rehashed lyrics can detract from a song, but don't always - We've heard this "scenario" lyrically before. Boy meets girl, he's intrigued, interested.... he's "beginning endlessly" again. For me this arrangement still shines thru over familiar lyrical territory. He sounds like a mature musician exploring new ways to sonically express his constant female fascination. It's an "age appropriate" pick-up song. All those who hate BCW for NOT sounding "age appropriate" should love this, but P's fans talk out of both sides of their mouths more than he does... anywho!

er

Yeah, I felt more or less the same way when listening back to Ain't Gonna Miss U. It's pretty good, it's just that he's done it all before. On the one hand, you can say he is repeating himself, on the other, you can hardly blame a man for doing what he's good at.

I think Prince flouts peoples' expectations with this song, you think it's going a certain direction but he chooses a different route instead. The bass line chugging along sounds like it's heading down the runway for takeoff but then the tempo slows. He's toying with our idea of what a Prince song should be. I enjoy when he does the unexpected, and Groovy Potential has that quality about it. I hope there is more to come around the corner in 2014.

There is an interesting study on tempo that is featured in this story on Beethoven, and how he toyed with peoples' natural sense of tempo in his composition, keeping his audience on the edge with a slightly faster tempo than they what the would want by their own internal metronomes http://www.npr.org/blogs/...nary-music Give it a listen

Very good song.

99% of my posts are ironic. Maybe this post sides with the other 1%.

I agree, this is my favourite song of 2013. I also like "Fixurlifeup", but this tune is the only one that really surprised me.
